Clodagh Phelan (goodreadscomclodagh_phelan) | 37 comments In the middle of reading 'Stoner', 'The Gates' and have just started S.J. Bolton's 'Awakening'. If anyone on this forum knows how to make things link, and is willing to tell me how to do it, I would be very grateful. I sort of know a bit of html but whenever I try to put it in I must get it wrong as it doesnt' work. Thanks in advance.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Above the text box there's an 'add book' link - click on that and search for the book you want to add.

Did you enjoy Before I Go to Sleep? I read it a year or two ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've had this copy for nearly 3 years, I've been meaning to read it and see what all the fuss was about. Well now I have read/listened to the book, I've still yet to make my mind up. Not seen the film neither.

It starts off weird to the extent I don't know much about amnesia and the effects it can have on the person and the family. It brings you in to think Christine is out of her mind daily, wondering why she forgets who she is and what's she been doing. It brings you back to her past when she tries to remember things, sees a doctor and the person who is living with her is not who he seems to be. Yes, it was intriguing, but in some parts I can honestly say I was like "Do I want to carry on reading this". I did carry on as I wanted to know if the person was really who she thought.

Not a bad storyline and I can honestly say I gave it 3 stars as to me it was an ok book. Sorry to those who thought it was a page turner, maybe it was just me at the time.

It intrigued the heck out of me so I guess I'm one who thought it was a real page-turner. No need to apologise for feeling differently - it would be a boring world indeed if we all held the same views.

David Hadley Just finished Fingersmith which I thought was very good on the whole.

Just started Only the Innocent, which is looking interesting.

message 7972: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I felt like that about gone Girl. I'd heard loads of hype but I couldn't like any of the characters or care about them. I only finished it because it was a village book group read.

I've just finished Stories on the Go: 101 Very Short Stories by 101 Authors by 101 different authors. Huge variety of styles and genres and for the most part I enjoyed reading it and found the stories satisfying, which is pretty good going for flash fiction of around 1000 words per story. It could have been more tightly edited and there were formatting niggles but it's a good book for this time of year, when you have short spells for reading or short attention spans!

I loved Gone Girlbut I hadn't read or heard the hype so I came to it fresh. I loved it for its distinctiveness, for being different, its cleverness. However, the characters left me cold - this increased as I read on. Any lingering warmth I felt disappeared (except for the sister.)

As to Before I Go To Sleep I felt rather the same way you did Fiona. Started off well, but nearly stopped reading it towards the end.

Sam Kates I think I was a little lukewarm about the ending to Before I Go to Sleep, but it had been so good up to that point my overall impression was still favourable.

I have Gone Girl on my Kindle to read, but had a few weighty paperbacks for Christmas so may not get to it for a while.

I really want to read before I go to sleep, got a copy last year, maybe I should put it on the pile for this year.

Loved Only the Innocent, her next book, The Back Road is on my list this year. I did accidently buy her third, although Amazon gave me a free book!

I'm persevering with the Penal Code while I'm on holiday, if I don't get more into it when I get to the airport tomorrow, I shall start my first challenge book.

Tim | 8539 comments Just finished the latest Peter Grant novel, Foxglove Summer (Peter Grant, #5) by Ben Aaronovitch - brilliant as always. This is one of my few "drop everything and read" (actually, listen to - Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is the most awesome narrator) series.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Finished Maurice by E.M. Forster, gay romance written in 1913, that wasn't published till 1971 after Forster's death. His sexuality had not been publicly known until then. I enjoyed the story. Some of the writing was beautiful. But too often, I could not follow who was who in dialogue, which rather spoilt the book for me.

Currently reading And Playing the Role of Herself by K.E. Lane for my Goodreads Lesbian Book Club. Lovely romance, though a bit hefty on the detail.

I've posted my review for Chris Ward's 'The Tube Riders' and it's an excellent adventure set in a dystopian Britain. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the trilogy:

David Hadley I have also just finished The Knowledge: How to Rebuild Our World from Scratch which is about what knowledge would be neccesary to rebuild our technological society after some sort of apocalypse.

It was a very interesting read in its on right, but would be ideal research material for anyone interested in writing a post-apocalyptic novel.

Recommended.

Now reading Money: The Unauthorised Biography which has started well - with the stone money of Yap.

Sam Kates Just finished I Am Legend. Thoroughly enjoyed and surprised by the deliciously dark ending (which is nothing like the films I've seen based on it).
