Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Grabbed a paperback of Brick Lane from the staff room today.

Might even read it.

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments I've read that one, Patti. Just took a look and it was three for me. I recall some parts being really good, where others just fell a bit flat.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Brick Lane - I recall it being... interminable.

I like James Oswald too, I think his Inspector McLean books are excellent. Somewhat less keen on his outings as JD Oswald, the Benfro dragon books.

message 7854: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Haven't read those, but I love the McLean ones.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments There's a new one (no5) due out in Feb :)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments Well after having this book for OVER a year (which is when I started to read it lol). I have now finished the amazing and interesting The Heartstone Odyssey - Arvan Kumar. You have to read this book.

Now I am still reading The City of Malgar - Rosemary Lynch and also listening to The Husband's Secret - Liane Moriarty.

Hoorah! Thanks for letting me know.

message 7858: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Hawk Quest, which wasn't a bad historical yarn, but with maybe a bit too much about falconry for my taste.

Just started The Intruders, which is on the telly at the moment featuring John Simm with an American accent.

message 7859: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Finished our group book Fingersmith and started The Memory Box which I spotted on the Indie Book Bargains newsletter a week or so back.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) That Which Should Not Be by Brett J. Talley

I've just finished reading That Which Should Not Be by Brett J Talley and it's a well written and enjoyable tale based on H P Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. You can read my review here:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Finally finished The Woman in White, didn't rate it that much but gave it 3 stars. Not sure what to read next but have 5 hours traveling on Fri so should get at least one book read

Sorry. I missed your reply.
Santiago books?

Just bought Santiago a myth of the far future.
Is this the one?

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Finished Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd - weird and clever. Now reading The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths which is appealing and annoying in about equal proportions, and Margaret Skea's The Turn of the Tide, which is excellent.

message 7864: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Ayris (stuayris) | 2614 comments If you liked Hawksmoor the The House of Doctor Dee is a must. Wonderful stuff!

message 7865: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Yes, I must go back to that! Hawksmoor was just ridiculously well plotted and written.

message 7866: by David (last edited Nov 20, 2014 06:05AM) (new)

David Hadley I've just finished The Intruders, which I thought was rather good. Better than the version on the telly at the moment.

Never heard of the author before, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for more of his stuff. A kind of King/Koontz type thing for those that like that sort of stuff.

Just started Ratlines, which is off to a good start.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Managed three short stories while travelling. I need to find some good classics to read next year, I've read two this year but not liked either

message 7868: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths, which won me round from my initial misgivings, up to a point, anyway. May have to abandon fiction for a while in favour of books on Scotch Whisky.

message 7869: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Just finished The Paying Guests. Just stunning.

My review is here: http://www.100wordreviews.com/blog/th...

This year I've read Grimm's Fairy Tales, which were grim, and The Woman in White. Going to read Little Women next year, need a second though

Started Scary Mary today

The good thing about horror is that it covers a multitude of sins :-)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've started a huge tome of a book. My kindle is saying it's going to take me 19 hours to read it!

It's called The Callahans. Doesn't seem to be on goodreads.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments B J wrote: "Beware of the classics Desley. Mark Twain said (something like), 'A classic is a book that everyone thinks they ought to have read, but nobody wants to.'"

That seems very accurate, and probably why I'm struggling to find any more to read, I seem to have read the ones I wanted to, I think some of the ones I've downloaded have been because I thought I should.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Maybe, Misery by C. S. Bailey

I've just finished reading C S Bailey's debut novel Maybe, Misery. I heartily recommend it as an interesting read. It's also available for free download from Amazon today.

Check out my review here:

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished The Dragon Box by Katie W Stewart - a lovely read for a younger audience - but I loved it too!

http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

Just started southsiders by Nigel Bird. Shaping up interestingly!

message 7880: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Ratlines which is a nice tight thriller set in Ireland in the 1960s with escaped Nazis and stuff.

Just started Doctor Sleep, which looks good. I especially like the way he references Charlie Manx from his son's book.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Just finished Plum Lucky, it was an OK read, can't complain as I paid 10p for it!! It is going in the charity pile though. Next paperback will probably be 206 Bones

message 7882: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Too much non-fiction reading for me recently.

Finished Write. Publish. Repeat. which spent 100,000+ words telling me to write more books.

Currently on Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem by Gloria Steinem, for the F-word (feminist) Goodreads book club BOTM. Interesting stuff, but also rather too wordy.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished (well, yesterday) southsiders by Nigel Bird. Lovely book which I enjoyed. Would have liked more! Just started The Magician in the Attic by Caspian. Good so far.

message 7885: by David (new)

David Hadley Just started Crisis? What Crisis?: Britain in the 1970s, which is looking very good indeed.

message 7886: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments Sorry been AWOL, hardly read since I finished The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty . So today I started and finished NYPD Red (NYPD Red, #1) by James Patterson - James Patterson which I think he is getting back to usual self. Now I need to read NYPD Red 2 (NYPD Red #2) by James Patterson - James Patterson to carry on the story.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12599 comments Finished Scary Mary this week, really enjoyed it, and have put the other two on my wishlist. Started a short story by Iain Rowan next, as I don't have a lot of time for reading this week. Need to catch up on favourite authors though.

message 7888: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Reciprocal Paranoia (Contact 4) by Mike Freeman

I've just finished reading Mike Freeman's Reciprocal Paranoia and while it's the weakest book in the series so far, it's still a good military sci-fi read. See me review here:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

message 7889: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Finished Istanbul Passage by Joseph Kanon, a very good thriller with some historical depth. Not sure what next.

message 7890: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments Have now finished NYPD Red 2 - James Patterson which I thought had me guessing in the first 25% of the book. Then I get to 75% and BANG it threw me off course and I was like "I NEVER SAW THAT COMING". So I am now going to read A Touch of Lilly - Nina Pierce for a slightly steamy kinda book (avert your eyes now if you don't like or do Erotica kind of books lol).

message 7891: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Finished the hefty but rather fab Revolution from Within: A Book of Self-Esteem by Gloria Steinem, feminist classic.

Am currently reading the pretty odd Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

message 7892: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Whiskey Devil by Christian Galacar

I've just finished reading Christian Galacar's short story Whiskey Devil. It's well written and a good read, but a bit more development would have elvated it to something excellent. Here's my review:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

message 7893: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) | 942 comments Have finished the amazing and sexual A Touch of Lilly - Nina Pierce. Found it boring at the start, but carried on and it got better. Now I can't decide between Fall of Night - Rachel Caine or Tick Tock - James Patterson. 1 is a Vampire series to finish off bar 1 more afterwards and the other is another JP with Michael Bennett as the hero.

message 7894: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Doctor Sleep, which I thought was great.

Just started The Lords' Day.

message 7895: by Nigel (last edited Dec 04, 2014 02:39PM) (new)

Nigel Bird (nigelbird) | 167 comments Just finished an advance review copy of a book called Down With The Dead. It's the second from a publisher called Number Thirteen Press who are intending to release a novella on the 13th of each month for 13 months. So far, they've got an excellent portfolio.
Next? Russian Roulette: The Konstantin Files I think, though there is a row of George Simenon novels looking down at me from the bookshelves...staring and daring.

message 7896: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished The Magician in the Attic by Caspian. I enjoyed this a great deal.
http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

Just started Eden: A Sci-Fi Novella by Martin Roy Hill. It's a novella so I won't be long finishing it. I'm enjoying this too - different view of the origin of humanity.

And yes, I do give a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews - because life's too short to read stuff I know I won't like!

message 7898: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I had a bit of a read-fest this weekend. I chose one author I didn't know and one I did. They were both excellent, though very different.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is one that several people here have read. I feared it would be depressing but it certainly isn't. As a traditionally published book, it hasn't got a place on the blog but here's my review - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Maureen's Christmas Carol by Jonathan Hill is a festive story which I think is the best of the Maureen bunch to date.

http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
It's still free so do have a book and a laugh while it is.

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Just finished Jason Vail's The Girl in the Ice, the latest in this excellent series. My favourite typo.. when Stephen is being greeted by a lord, he shook his hand 'surprisingly without condensation' !!

message 7900: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments It is good, isn't it? I liked the way he skirted round Cadfael without ever quite going there.
