Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Don't think I have any books about dragons.

message 7453: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments I've just finished the rather thrilling Wonders of the Universe by Brian Cox.

Fancied a 'gritty thriller.' Google suggested The Spy Who Came In from the Cold by John le Carré. So, I'm going with that.

Ooh er ... Stephen King? He's proper *scary,* isn't he? ...

message 7456: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No! Oh, grief. Poor guy has been so pigeon holed. :(

His latest is a rather formulaic thriller but with that Sai King way of using every word to its fullest potential.

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "No!"

Phew. I've marked it as to read, Patti. Thanks for the rec :-)

message 7458: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I hope you read and enjoy it even half as much as I, Natasha.

Read the look inside. If it doesn't get ya, then fair nuff. :)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Three chapter in, I'm enjoying Mr Mercedes.

Patti, Dragons.

Steven | 173 comments just finished reading Sovereign by Cj Sansom the 3rd book in the Shardlake series and I loved it. now reading the novelisation of Broadchurch... I seem to be the only person who didn't watch it when it was on the gogglebox last year. enjoying it so far.

message 7461: by Stevo (new)

Stevo (stevop) | 31 comments The Luminaries. Been reading this in between other books since January!

No, that would be two of us. How's it going?

Shardlake is brilliant!

message 7463: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've not seen Broadchurch either.

Can't settle into a book at the moment so I'm gonna read some novellas. Won't have much reading time in the next few weeks.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) A Gathering of Ghosts by David Haynes

I've just finished reading David Haynes's collection of ghost stories A Gathering of Ghosts and it's worth reading for 'The Last Waltz' alone - a sublime story!

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

And at only 77p (99c) there's no excuse not to give it a try! It's a definite must read for fans of Victorian horror and ghost stories.

I'm now onto some science fiction with The Engineer Reconditioned by Neal Asher.

message 7467: by Adele (new)

Adele (adelemitch) Just got sent Swamp Bones: A Novella, will read that tonight, half-way through Double Cross: The True Story of the D-Day Spies taking much longer than I anticipated

message 7468: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just started, though I'm a quarter way in already, DragonFly by Charles A. Cornell. I think he's a Goodreads author. It's excellent so far, a Second World War alternative reality scifi/fantasy - is this diesel punk? Not sure, but I'm really enjoying it.

message 7469: by A.L. (new)

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 1608 comments I'm reliving some books I read when I was younger - The White Mountainsis the first of the Tripods collection and I loved that series. It is YA but enjoying it so far. This version has a preface from the author talking about his experiences publishing - even by then he had 20 plus books to his name but still ended up rewriting most of book I and half of book II before the publisher would take it. Liking a lot so far.:)

message 7470: by L.A. (new)

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just started Invisible Prey - Sandford. Enjoying it again!!

message 7471: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just finished DragonFly which I thoroughly enjoyed - and yes, apparently it is indeed dieselpunk. The aerial combat scenes and simple flying scenes were particularly good. No time to read anything else for three weeks till I get my own book out ...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments L.A. wrote: "Just started Invisible Prey - Sandford. Enjoying it again!!"

I really should sort out where I stopped in the Prey series.

Tim | 8539 comments I've never read any Neal Asher, but I see his books about a lot. Any suggestion for a good place to start?

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Tim wrote: "I've never read any Neal Asher, but I see his books about a lot. Any suggestion for a good place to start?"

The book I just reviewed is a good place to start as it introduces some of his main concepts.

message 7477: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Think I might try The Skinner cos it's got whisper sync for voice, and I quite fancy giving that a try (and the audiobook is only £3.49 when you buy the Kindle edition!)

message 7478: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Skinner is pretty good. I like the premise of the Spattarjay virus.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12600 comments Thanks to travelling, I've read a few this week. I decided to stop reading Stealing Flowers, I got 18% in and realised I didn't care about the characters.

Then read Lilies, I liked the concept and would have liked to have seen this as a longer book.

Whispers in the Shadows Vol II, not sure why I read Vol 2 before 1, but hey ho. As usual with short story collections, some were good, some were OK and some were poor. Will read Vol 1 though.

Knighthorse, didn't like it as much as his vampire series, and there were the odd mistake that distracted you.

Now reading The Death Trip, really thought provoking. 67% in.

Adele (adelemitch) I have just finished Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, what a weird interesting book, now going to read the next one Hollow City, which was on Goodreads books of 2014 so far.

message 7488: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished The Long War which, like the first one, was okay, but nothing special.

Just started Mr. Mercedes, which - so far -
seems most satisfactory.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I remember reading.

Vaguely.

message 7492: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Finished The Spy Who Came In from the Cold by John le Carré, which was alright. I'll treat myself to Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King instead at some point :-)

Read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Hmmm. Whatever.

Accidentally read a couple of erotic short stories (MF and MMF). Nuff sed.

Just started Candide by Voltaire.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12600 comments Read a couple of shorts this week, The Death Trip, only recommended if you are fine with reading about euthanasia. I found it very thought provoking. Then read Spikebreaker not as keen on this, found it quite confusing. Got 150 pages into The Sleeping Doll

Now reading The Maze Runner and Gray Redemption
