Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11208 comments 50.1 - Emily Kate's Task: Hodge-Podge

For this task you need to read 3 books that you pick from the following categories. You may read 3 books from 3 different categories or you may read multiple books from the same category. However, NO rereads are allowed!

A. Book by an author you have already read and liked
B. Book with a goodreads rating with 4.30 or more
C. Book with 1 word title
D. Friend rated 5-stars
E. Current or previous SRC group read that you have never read
F. Published in 2011
G. One of the 10 oldest on your TBR
H. Book with more than 25K ratings on Goodreads main book page
I. Added to your TBR during this challenge (but before this task is posted)
J. Book listed as popular with friends

But here is the catch, your books must fit the following criteria. A single book may match more than 1, but all 3 criteria must be met by the books read for the task:

1. Book 700+ pages -- you may find something on this list: Big Fat Books Worth the Effort
2. Book by a goodreads author
3. Book that is a part of a series -- the series must be identified as a series on GoodReads (i.e., "Series Name" and # should appear on the book's main page after the book title)

Required: State which category (A-J) and which criteria (1-3) each book fits when your post your completed task.

Examples:
Book 1: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling -- category A (author I've read and liked) -- fits criteria #1 (book over 700 pages) and criteria #3 (part of a series)
Book 2: The Peach Keeper by Sarah Addison Allen -- category F (published in 2011) -- fits criteria #2 (Goodreads author)
Book 3: Animal Farm -- category H (more than 25K ratings) -- all criteria met by other books

OR another example
Book 1: The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray -- category D (friend rated it 5 stars) -- fits criteria #1 (over 700 pages), #2 (written by a GRA), and #3 (part of a series)
Book 2: Bossypants by Tina Fey -- category F (published in 2011) -- all criteria met by first book
Book 3: Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris -- category F (published in 2011) -- all criteria met by first book

Emily Kate Anderson | 68 comments - For 700+ pages book, same rules apply as the Big Book rules
- Multiple books within 1 book do not count towards 700+ pages book
- I word titles may not include articles, i.e. The Help is NOT a 1-word title

Will a 3 books in one work for the over 700 pages

message 7: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8973 comments ok, I think I got this

Kushiel's Dart - Cat D (Renee) - criteria 1, 2, and 3
so then I could pick any two other books, so long as they fit one of the first categories?

message 8: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katmcv) | 455 comments I think I've worked mine out:

Clarity by Kim Harrington
Fits option F (published in 2011) and Option 2 (goodreads author)

Valiant by Holly Black
Fits option C (one word title) and Option 3 (part of a series)

The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray
Fits Option A (author previously read and liked) and Option 1 (700+ pages)

Have I done it right?

message 9: by Kathy G. (last edited Jul 19, 2011 09:39PM) (new)

Kathy G. | 1931 comments I wanted to read The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne. I actually have the kindle version which doesn't show a page number-- and the Goodreads one doesn't say "Mass Paperback" but, on Amazon it is listed as the Mass Paperback.

The Mysterious Island (Kindle)
http://www.amazon.com/Mysterious-Isla... (Amazon Description).

I hate to start a book that large and find out it won't qualify for the 700 + pages.

Thanks----

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 815 comments Ok I think I will just have to move some things around...

C. Outlander (criteria #1 and #3)
B. Anna and the French Kiss (criteria #2)
D. Garden Spells (criteria #2)

Will this work?

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 815 comments Another question... Would we be able to do an audiobook for a book that is normally more than 700 pages? It takes me about an hour and a half to commute every day so I wanted to see if I could listen to a 700+ page book rather than actually read it

message 14: by chucklesthescot (new)

chucklesthescot 700 pages plus is out for me-I just don't have time for a book that size with all the other tasks I'm doing. Pity! The rest of it suited me perfectly!

*mod note* Here's a review of audiobooks and page numbers

Audiobooks may be used for SRC tasks. For unabridged audiobooks, use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardback edition. Abridged audiobooks may NOT be used for tasks with defined page requirements as there are no direct print equivalents.

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments Hi Emily Kate - nice task!

I was wondering if you were going to count titles like The Help, The Hunt, The Passage, The Fall as one word titles. It seems like in a lot of tasks "the" is not counted.

message 20: by Foxy Grandma (new)

Foxy Grandma (foxygrandma) | 1194 comments Love this task Emily Kate, it is like a mini-challenge all on its own!!.. Now to my TBR list to find some books. Too bad I have already claimed Fall of Giants for my task.....

message 21: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8973 comments Morphidae - if I read her task right - you could use The Wise Man's Fear to fit all 3 mandatory categories - and then any other 2 that fit one of the selection criteria - I realized that with Kusiel's Dart

message 22: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo | 125 comments Oh, sweet. I'm already 1/3 of the way through Roots, so I'll just switch that to this task and find another for the family history task!

Sorry, no. It has to be 1 single book.
Follows the same rules as big books points

I am not sure what the exact rules are but as long as it would count for gig book it would qualify for 700+ pages, same rules apply.

Go to the main page for the book. After the author's name, you'll see (Goodreads Author) if s/he is one. OR, go to the author's profile. If s/he is a GR author, it will say so in the upper right hand corner of the profile box.

message 47: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8973 comments also, if you are looking at your bookshelves..if there is a star next to the authors name like * then they are a GR author

Meagan (mmbell) | 315 comments My question is about the 700+ and the series requirements.

Will The Lord of the Rings work for the 700+ pages and the series requirements? It's on the list you posted for being over 700 pages, and although it's one book, it's listed on Goodreads as The Lord of the Rings #1-3. I just wanted to ask before I crack open this monster!
