Welcome aboard, Allison. We've always got room from another SK fan!

I've been a Stephen King fan for many years and enjoy almost everything of his that I've read. My first exposure came when I listened to The Langoliers (from Four Past Midnight) on the way up to Georgia from South FL. I was so engrossed in the story that I almost ran out of gas at one point! I was hooked from that point forward.
There are still plenty of his books that I haven't gotten to as he's a prolific author, but some that I'm going to try to read within the next year is the Dark Tower series, IT, and The Stand. Those are some of his classics that are a must.
I'm interested to know which books Mr. King recommends, so I thought this would be a great group to participate in. Looking forward to broadening my horizons even more!

Huge fan of S.K. (just as everyone else I would assume)
Also a member of the fan club. So does that make me obsessive or borderline?

Hey, welcome, Jean. Hope you are joining us in our first group read.

My favorite of all time is a tie between The Stand and The Talisman!
I have an original hardcopy of The Stand purchased when it first was published and bought it to a book signing for the Tommy Knockers in New York City and had it signed.
I have read both the stand and the talisman at least 15 times. My least favorite Stephen King book of all time is Dreamcatcher! I absolutely hated it and it took forever to finish! Sorry guys.

Wow, a signed copy of the original Stand. I'm jealous! No worries about Dreamcatcher; it was a weird one and not my most favorite either. Welcome aboard, Cindy.

I would love to join in a group read. Which book are you reading now? Have you started. I read fast! I have read all the older stuff, but never read the Tower series. Well, I'll amend that, I think I read the first 2 long ago. They are about a boy named Jack, and he must travel across the US to get something to save his Mother? Is this right? The others seem so popular. What do you advise? I have been writing some book reviews on jeanbakula.hubpages.com, but they are mostly writers, not readers, and I'm both! Please keep in touch!

I recently started reading Stephen King around last year but ever since I haven't been able to put any of his books down. I'm currently reading It but I have 3 books of his that I've bought that I need to start after. I don't really have any friends that read, let alone read Stephen King, so I started goodreads and joined this group! :] The man is a genious and I hold his opinons of other books high.

Hey Jean:
Our first group read is for the months of Aug-Sep, starting Aug 1st. The book is Last Night in Twisted River by John Irving. There is already a discussion started for it.
The Oct-Nov group read is Fieldwork. I read fast, too, but we wanted to give a bit of time between reads in the beginning. Plus many of us belong to several groups and have enough on our plates right now. Perhaps after the first of the year, we will move them up to once a month.
As far as Jack on his travels to save his mother, that was The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub. It was followed many years later by Black House with Jack being a grown man.
The Dark Tower books feature a boy with a similar name, Jake. I highly recommend the series; it is amazing.

No problem, Jean. I think you will enjoy the Dark Tower series; most everyone has. The first one, The Gunslinger, moves a bit slower than the rest of the books. (Be sure to read the revised edition). The next book, The Drawing of the Three, is full of action. I can't say enough good things about the series.
I agree that IT is an awesome book; I've always thought that it never got enough mention and think it is one of King's best. And I agree that Duma Key was also wonderful.
You have great taste in King!

Another writer! Welcome, Larry. I think King's 3 non-fiction books about writing and fiction influences are great. Have you read Secret Windows : Essays and Fiction On The Craft Of Writing? It is also about writing. It was issued as a Book-of-the-Month Club edition. I see that Amazon has some new and used copies for sale from independent sellers, if you are interested. Not many know about that book, and some confuse the title with King's novella Secret Window, Secret Garden: Two Past Midnight orginally published in Four Past Midnight. It was later made into a movie starring Johnny Depp.
How hot is it there in GA? It's been horrible here in Michgian. As they say, it's not the heat, it's the humidity. I imagine the humidity is terrible there.

I'm a huge SK fan like everyone here, but if I am to confess, I actually never really paid much atention to his recomendations until verry recetly, until I came across comments like this ones:
"Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend."
"Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. … The real difference is that [Harry Potter author] Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and [Twilight author] Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."
After those, I held his recommendations way up high.

My name is Rafal (Rif for friends). I live in UK, Surrey and I'm new to goodreads.
To be perfectly honest, I'm new to SK as well (I know - shameful) - I watched loads of his adaptations and I always wanted to read his books but there were always tons of other books to read... So I've just started with King's Dark Towers series couple of months ago and I'm just about to finish The Song of Susannah. It's amazing how different those books are one from each other. Some of them I love, some of them I don't but one thing for sure - King's a true wordslinger!
I still have dozens of other books sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read so I probably won;t read any of your reccomendations yet, but I will be listening carefully and hopefully one day I'm going to catch up with you!
Until then,
rif

Wow, Rafal (hopefull "Rif" to us one day), you decided to start your Stephen King reading with a huge task taking on the Dark Tower series. I hope you end up enjoying as much as myself and many others, and I hope you try some other books by King, as he writes in different genres, which includes the one he's famous for: horror. He truly is a master wordslinger!

It is quite a task, I admit. King mentions how difficult it was for him to continue writing the series. In SoS he actually describes how scared he was to do so. I find it equally difficult to continue reading - the closer I get to the last book, the longer it takes me to read it. And now that I think about it, I'm actually a bit uneasy when I want to take that damned book and finish it once and for all ;)
Oh and that 'one day' might be today. Friends of books are my friends :)

I have to wipe the smile from my face because of reading Debra T's responses to those of you who have expressed your love for It.
Debra says this is one of her favorite books...she forgets to tell you how, while reading IT , she had to leave the lights on during all of the those nights and some beyond, when it was time to sleep!!!

Sshhhh! Don't tell! It is true, IT scared the living daylights (or "dead-lights" for those who have read the book) out of me. I couldn't put it down and was up into the wee hours reading it, and couldn't turn out the lights when I finally succumbed to fatigue.
Of course, that was back in 1986 when the book first came out. I was still a fairly young lady at the time. I've re-read the book not too long ago and it still carries a punch!

Stephen King is my favorite author. I am constantly seeking other authors that compare, and am disappointed.
So the next best thing, it seems to me, is to read tomes that impressed the master.
When I read King's On Writing and Secret Windows, I had the thought that I should be writing his recommendations down. Of course, I didn't. Now I find that Debra did all the work for me.
I appreciate seeing this list and look forward to many good reads and discussions.
I think that we are off to a great start with the ones chosen so far.

I spend lots of time writing on Hubpages, but there is one piece I'd like to share. A woman compiled a list of how to recognize First Editions of Stephen King's books. I found from this "hub" as they are called that I had 3 1st edtions! If interested, it's a long address:http://anna-marie-bowman.hubpages.com... You may be surprised at what you have sitting on your bookshelves. I have the crazily colored garden printed cover of Lisey's Story!

You would have to read the book, as a synopsis just doesn't give one the entire flavor of the story, its setting, and characters. We are welcome to join us in the group read, but it is not required to be a member here.
Hope that helps.
