The Help
question
did you enjoy it?
If you enjoy historical fiction, especially historical fiction based on civil rights issues and that time period I think you will really enjoy this book. I read it several months ago and can definitely see myself re-reading it again. :) It is one of those books that is going to take you on a roller coaster of emotions when you read it.
This book really rang some bells for me. My family lived in Biloxi, from 1965-68. I was 5 years old when we moved there and while my siblings were off at school, our (African-American) housekeeper, Alameda watched me while she cleaned house. I loved this woman and was devastated when moved away. Having recently read this beautiful book I am blown away to see that I never really understood what her life was about. I'm so sad that I never had the chance to tell her what a difference her care, and I hope love, made in my life.
I absolutely LOVED this book. It was one of my favorite reads of 2010. I don't often mourn the separation from characters like I did when this book was finished. It is one I will go back to read again and again. And, I love giving it as a gift to other women who will likewise feel inspired. Can't wait for the movie!!
Liked the ending of the book the best as it wasn't a fairy tale ending which would have ruined the whole story. Thoughtfully written book I enjoyed reading it.
I honestly think The Help will be a classic. Although I collect books by various authors, I seldom,if ever re-read an entire book. I did with The Help
It was a very good book, I read it in college for a book report.
I have to admit that I was a little naive about how segregation really affected people’s lives in the 60’s. It always seemed so far away & completely different from what I was living. I especially never really thought about a Maid's life - that she was exspected to help raise the kids as well as ten to the housekeeping chords - then do it all again for her own family.
This seemed more like historical fiction as it taught me about some of the happenings in Jackson during that time. It also taught me about silverware patterns and the importance of appearance. I could see using this novel as a text to teach from in high school as students would learn more about segregation of the maids and their white employers than just reading about it in a history text.
I can honestly say it was a little slow at times but overall it was a good read.
It has a lot of stuff in it. It's heartwarming, sweet, gripping, exciting, heartbreaking story. It focuses on Miss Hilly, Miss Skeeter, Mae Mobley, Aibileen, and Minny. Minny and Aibileen are 'the help'- black women who get paid(very little) for raising your children, doing the housework, etc. during the 1950's. Miss Hilly is a selfish white woman- the 'antagonist' of the story, you could say. She is very cruel, especially to Minny, who is a black woman with a very strong opinion, and is determined to speak her mind, or get revenge. Miss Skeeter is a white woman who was raised by Constantine, and who becomes curious about the Help's daily lives. She decides to write a book about them, by interviewing the Help of Jackson, MI. The tension heats up when, as more white women in Jackson read it, they slowly figure out that it is based on Jackson, and slowly turn on the Help- thanks to Miss Hilly...
A thrilling read.
A thrilling read.
I enjoyed it. I stayed up until 3 am last night just to finish it. It got difficult sometimes to understand what was being said, since I'm a "Yankee", but otherwise I immensely enjoyed it. Now I just have to see the movie.
