I picked this one up quite some time ago... and promptly lost it in my pile of "one-day reads" but with all the hype going on with the release of the movie, I thought I should bring it up near the top of the pile at least...

14. Creation: Life and How to Make It by Steve Grand
{reading as of 12/28/07} {finished 12/30/07}
I've hastily added this to this challenge (from my physical still stuffed-too-full to be read shelf) as I've hit book "42" in my Book Challenge Group (where I aim to read 104 books in the year ending Sept. 30, 2008) and couldn't help feeling that the "honour" should go to a book that at least had something, even if only peripherally, to do with the 'answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything'

What a great choice this turned out to be!
Witty and provocative this is a great guide - a kind of Zen Guide to artificial life that is based not on the debunking or debasing of life but rather in its elevation to its proper place.
I simply have to find out the directions and findings of the author's research since he wrote this book so I've put Grand's more recent book, Growing Up With Lucy: How to Build an Android in Twenty Easy Steps , on my wish list and will likely end up special ordering it rather than just hoping it shows up in my favorite haunts....

The goal is to each month read one book from my shelves that for some reason I've never read before. To provide some structure, I've started with a list of six such books from my library of about 4000 books and I will, as I complete a book from the list I will add another to the bottom so I always have 6 books "active" on this TBR list.
In the Goodreads Book Challenge Group, I've taken on the task of reading 104 books in the one year period Oct 2007 - Sept 2008 of which a minimum of 12 will be taken from this challenge.
