Google is celebrating its 10th anniversary and has launched a great philanthropic contest. You can read about it here. http://www.project10tothe100.com/how_...

One of the Study World issues Jane and I often talk about (yes, we're geeky like that) is the Ixia/Sitia world order, which is better, and what it would really be like to live there. There are very different ideals, different paths, however the destination, for many people, is the same--a Good Life. The Commander tries to get there with his Code of Behavior. The Sitian Council tries to get there with democracy.

Here in the Real World, how can we act to make life better? The Google 10 to the 100 project challenges us to think, dream, and maybe make that dream a reality. They are committing 10 million US dollars to fund the winning projects. The deadline for idea submissions is Oct 20, 2008; voting for the top 100 ideas (selected by committee) begins on Jan. 27, 2009.

Liz | 25 comments I think what Google is doing is great. To make the world a better place we really have to start with ourselves. I really believe it is the little things that count. But at some point we do have to move to bigger things...

Liz (jedimindreader) | 27 comments When I heard about this I was so happy. Its a great feeling to know that not everyone is worried about being uber rich. Some people care about the world. You know what I would do? I would bake cookies for everyone in the world. I love cookies its like a tummy hug when you're having a bad day. Though I highly doubt my idea would change the world.

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 172 comments I submitted my idea. I think this is a wonderful way for Google to give back and prove that not all companies care little for those in need.

Jeanne (jeannec) It is for things like this that I want to work for Google. (Well, this and the free lunches, the gym, and the fact that I can walk to the googleplex...)
I'd feel much more inclined to work hard I think if I knew that the company I worked for was trying to better the world - not just make money.

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 172 comments I know what you mean Jeanne--I originally was so happy to work for Whole Foods because the store leaders (managers) we had were much more community oriented. We held more charity benefits, cook-offs, store demonstrations and out reach programs in the first year then in the last 3 years since the original Leaders left for new stores. Just made me feel better about things.

Kristen Harvey | 511 comments I really think Google is on top of things, seeing as the site really hasn't existed that long! I mean it is really hard to think about a world without Google isn't it? And what better way to get people interested and get more ideas than by asking its users.
