Julia Navarro is very popular in Spain. I am not a fan of hers but that might have to do with the translation of her books.
Marie, without being too pedantic, many books are written in English without being written in England. If a book was written in South or Central America it wouldn't be a Spanish or Portugese book.Spanish book wise:
I enjoyed Arturo Perez-Reverte's books. His Captain Alatriste series is swashbuckling fun, The Seville Communion and Dumas Club also stood out.
Cervantes! No one has mentioned Don Quixote for Spain. OK, that's my final €2 worth. Read Don Quixote for Spain...
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón takes place in Barcelona. Though not my favorite book, most people really love it.
Don Quijote - although I have yet to convince my book loving wife of it's greatness. Maybe I am prejudice being a Spanish undergrad major. Part I is a bit meandering and the first time reader might want to read an abridgement. Cervantes tells some great stories that don't have so much to do with the main plot. Part II is the superior of the two in my opinion.
I recommend Agustín Sánchez Vidal. So far he has writtn only one book - La Llave Maestra / The Master Key - but it was pretty good. He is currently writing his second book but I doubt that it is already done since it took him 10 years to write his first one.
If you are interested in the Spanish Civil War years, you should have a look atjavier cercas - "Soldados de Salamina"
Alberto Mendez - "Los Girasoles Ciegos / Blind Sunflowers"

Garcilaso De la Vega's poetry is absolutely brilliant, especially if you have the opportunity to read it in the original Spanish.
Carlos Ruiz Zafon immediately came to mind when I thought of Spain. He's one of my favourite authors, his novels are just so atmospheric and exciting. I read Ildefonso Falcones's Cathedral of the Sea last summer (while I was in Spain actually!) and greatly enjoyed that novel as well. I had studied a bit of Catalonian history in previous years so it was interesting to read a story taking place in the Medieval period when Catalonia was still its own autonomous province.
I also love, love, love Federico Garcia Lorca's peotry. I wish I knew Spanish to read it in the original, he really has a way with words.
I’m also seconding Zafón:
The Shadow of the Wind by Spanish author Carlos Ruiz Zafón is a worldwide bestselling gothic mystery set in 1940s and 50s Barcelona. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ here is my review
