Elizabeth, I agree with L and Lynn. I am sorry you were disappointed in this issue, but think you should try another. Also, even if you don't subscribe to the magazine, you are still welcome in the group.

Sera | 1325 comments Elizabeth, I agree with what the others have said. Please feel free to continue to be part of our group even if you decide not to continue with your subscription of the magazine.

Paulette I just received my latest copy. Between Bookmarks Magazine and Goodreads, I'll never wonder what to read next. I just need to worry about finding the time.

Indeed; the more the read, the more we find that we want to read :)

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. If being a subscriber to the magazine isn't absolutely necessary I will come back to the group. Maybe I will try the next issue of Bookmarks as well. I may have been too hasty in my judgement. Wouldn't be the first time! Thank you all for being so kind and understanding.

Sera | 1325 comments That's great news, Elizabeth :)

message 58: by LynnB (new)

LynnB Just came in from getting the mail, which included my newest issue! This issues main article continues the Life Cycles theme with Aging & Death; also articles on Elmore Leonard and on Cara Black's City of Light. The new books guide looks like it has some I'm going to have to look at reading.

LynnB Sera wrote: "Lynn, I received my issue today, too! I am looking forward to seeing what's hot?"

This issue added several books to my TBR list (of course!). I enjoy that they focus on one or two authors in each issue. That's been interesting to me.

message 61: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I actually like that author approach, too, Lynn. The genre or theme focuses work for me as well.

I only was able to get through a few pages yesterday, but already found some books of interest.

You're quick! I hope to take a look within the next day or so. It sounds like there are some goodies inside. I am looking forward to it.

message 65: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I just looked over the Sept/Oct 2013 issue that came yesterday. The cover is so relaxing to look at! I still have to read it through, but just in my skimming the "Immigrants to America" article I found a few to add to my TBR -- just what I need :)

message 66: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I think that I might need to renew my subscription. I'll have to check. I haven't received my issue yet.

message 67: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments I love when I look at the New Book Guide and realize I have already read quite a few of the books listed. From the Sept/Oct issue, I have already read:

The Boys in the Boat Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith Joyland by Stephen King The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman The Silver Star by Jeannette Walls Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld

I am also scheduled shortly to receive the ebook of
& Sons by David Gilbert

There are several more new books on the list that I can't wait to read. I haven't even gotten around to reading the articles. Great edition!!!

Lisa, how did you like [book:Joyland
? I'm not a big King fan or fan of horror, but have liked one or two of King's books. This one sounded intriguing. Worth the read?

message 69: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 986 comments @Lynn

This is the first King book I have read in many years. I think it is worth your time. I wouldn't classify it as horror.

message 71: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) There were quite a few books in the new issue I plan on reading. However, most I already had on my to-read pile, thanks to the Books on the Nightstand podcast. So I have to say I did t find much new in the magazine this time.

I was rereading some old issues though, and saw an editor's letter from about 2 years ago talking about potential e-version of the magazine. Has there been any more talk of that that I might have missed?

message 72: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I received my issue yesterday (phew!). I haven't had a chance to look at it yet though.

Victoria, I haven't seen anything about the e-version of the magazine since that issue. I checked the website and didn't see anything there either.

Does anyone else have insight here?

message 73: by Robin P (new)

Robin P Even though I had heard of many of the new books, I usually don't read them that quickly, and I really appreciate the format where various reviews are summarized and I can see the pros and cons from a number of sources. There were several books that I had not thought I would like from just the one review I had seen, but after this issue I moved them up in desirability.

message 74: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Robin, that's a good point about how various reviews are summarized, and in my opinion, a real differentiator in how the magazine presents the material.

I agree with you on that. It's great to be able to compare several reviews in one spot quickly.

message 76: by Robin P (new)

Robin P I'm impressed by Lisa who has already read so many of the new books. I think I have more unread books in my house than I will be able to get through in my lifetime, plus unlimited classics available on ebook, and several unheard audiobooks on my ipod, so I try to resist a lot of new books that look good. Plus I am in several book groups on Goodreads and elsewhere. But that makes it all the more important to be confident a book is worth the reading time!

message 77: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Robin, I agree. The less time that I have to read, the more selective I am about the books that I choose.

message 78: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Like Lisa with the last issue, I have already read quite a few in the latest issue (mine came today, by the way, it's Nov/Dec) but I think that is a function of one of the themes - Best Books of 2013. Hard to believe the year is winding down! This issue also had lists of the Booker prize nominees and the National Book Awards, so again, I had already seen those and read a number of them. As always, the magazine did make me change my initial opinion on a few books, and my TBR pile grew some more.

message 79: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Thanks, Victoria. I'm hopeful that my new issue is coming today! I can't believe that the year is winding down either. It went fast.

message 80: by Melissa Wiebe (new)

Melissa Wiebe (melissawiebe80) I haven't received my Nov/Dec issue yet; should I contact them to ask them why I haven't got the newest one yet? Usually I have it by the first Monday/Tuesday of the month.

message 81: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Well yesterday was just the first Tuesday, so I think I would wait a week before contacting anyone. It will probably show up for you very soon!

message 82: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I just got mine a few days ago. If you do ask, I've had to email Goodreads in the past with questions and they've been quick to reply. Another thought is that with magazines it sometimes depends on your local PO as they move bulk mail in a different, slower way than first class (and therefore it can come on very different days for different areas).

message 83: by Melissa Wiebe (new)

Melissa Wiebe (melissawiebe80) Ok; I will see what happens. :)

message 84: by Melissa Wiebe (last edited Nov 08, 2013 09:45PM) (new)

Melissa Wiebe (melissawiebe80) I emailed Bookmarks and hopefully I'll get a response on Monday, or Tuesday at the very latest. I am now hoping its in the mailbox on Tuesday, due to the Remembrance Day holiday here in Canada (its a federal holiday and hence no mail on Monday; we don't get Saturday mail here). If I don't get it by the 14th, I am going to call them and see what is going on, as I am starting to get really restless in regards to my copy. I am hoping that it just got lost in the mail and that they can send me a new copy of the Nov/Dec. issue. Too bad they don't have an active Facebook or Twitter account.

message 85: by Melissa Wiebe (new)

Melissa Wiebe (melissawiebe80) I phoned the number on the website and I was unable to complete it. And I phoned another number that suggested I phone the number that was not able to complete it. I left a phone message and left my phone number and my email address with them. I am very tempted to just buy the issue through their website.

message 86: by Teresa (new)

Teresa I've missed a copy a few times and just ended up buying one at the bookstore to make sure I could still get it.

Does your local bookstore carry it? Do you need help getting this issue? You can private message me if you want and I can mail one to you. :)

You might try contacting them through the "Bookmarks Magazine" page on Goodreads. The publisher, Jon, has been pretty quick to reply to things posted there. Let him know the phone number posted doesn't seem to work, either.

I have no idea if the IndigoChapters bookstores carry it; have never seen it in their stores. I just wish that somebody would talk to me about this and I am very tempted not to renew my membership come June. I ordered a copy, but I don't know if it will come in time or if it will come at all, as I changed my shipping address for the copy because apparently they don't ship individual copies to Canada. Getting frustrated.

Melissa - This links to his page Bookmarks Magazine

or try the magazines website contact page, http://www.bookmarksmagazine.com/cont... which is probably a better choice.

Jon always seems to be right on top of taking care of subscriber issues. Glad you're getting your copy finally.

message 94: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I've just started the newest issue (Jan/Feb 2014) which came in yesterday's mail. Read Jon's "Letter from the Editor" -- it's a good reminder. And the "Contemporary African Fiction" section contains short articles about authors which has brought a few new ones to my attention. I haven't gotten into the "Art & Artists in Fiction" section yet, but I'm sure I'll find a few books there!! Looks like a good issue.

message 95: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I got mine yesterday as well, but haven't had a chance to sit down with it!

message 96: by Robin P (new)

Robin P I also thought the article on African writers was intriguing, not just the same few we usually hear of. I was amused by Jon's editorial in which he encouraged people not to buy so many books! Seems he forgot that his advertisers are businesses who want us to buy their books! Plus we wouldn't need his magazine if we weren't planning to get new books.

I think it's admirable to only buy books when you have read everything you own, but if I took that on I couldn't buy any for years. I have something like 200 books at home that I "plan to read". My excuse is that I never pay full price, they are usually from library sales and half-price stores. But great new stuff keeps coming out, or I keep trying new authors and genres. Well, I think it's not a bad vice to have.

message 97: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) | 17 comments I have several subscriptions but this is the one that gets me on tip- toes. Starting the beginning of the month the new issue comes out, I start looking for it and apprehension grows until I finally get my hands on it.

The months that there isn't an issue coming feel like something's missing and I grumble to myself, "I don't see why mags are only coming out every other month. Books are published every month, aren't they?" " My current issue is already worn out and I've memorized it even though I try to savor it but saving some of the articles to read when the dark days are here."

I found the very first charter issue when I was on home holiday while living in India. Since then it has followed me everywhere, after India, Texas, now Doha, Qatar. Since there seems to be a dearth of good bookstores here in Doha, as most have larger electronic sections than books, I cling to Bookmarks magazine as a life support, helping me pick books to download on Kindle or put on my shopping list for the next trip home.

message 98: by Juniper (last edited Oct 31, 2014 11:58AM) (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) i just received the newest issue in my mail today. forgetting it would be a nov/dec issue...i am really excited for the 'best books of 2014'! #BookGeek #ListNerd :)

edited to add:

i just read jon's letter, and i guess i am a bit confused, so would love some insight, if anyone has some. he's writing about turning the 'have you read' feature into a regular column, but says he hasn't quite 'cracked the code'.

so my question is this: isn't the feature already a regular column?

i don't think i am fully understanding the end goal jon is aiming for? do you think he wants to stockpile themes with recommendations to match, and lots of lists - 'best books for...', 'top ten books featuring...', etc? maybe they are running low on contributions from readers? or do you think he wants more editorial/writing included with each book recommended?

it's one of my favourite features of the magazine too, and i look forward to seeing what readers have contributed each issue. and i have also kept thinking i would send in my own 'have you read?' yet haven't. so maybe now's a good time! (of course, i have so many different ideas, it's been hard to focus. haha!!)

message 99: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Jennifer! Yay! So happy to see you here.

I won't be able to read the issue until this weekend. I will take a look then and circle back with you.

Did you see anything of interest in the issue?

message 100: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) hi sera! :)

i haven't gone all the way thorough yet, but there are features on the literature of WWI, and unusual narrators - both are interesting to me. i will also not be able to focus on it well until later this weekend...but i am so excited it's here! (i sometimes get the magazine a lot later than US readers, so i'm just thrilled it's not too delayed this month! stupid borders, and mail cops. haha. :)
