SOLVED!: Children's book about intelligent rats [s]

I remember very little of the book except that I read it as a child, and I one of the mice had a name that began with n, and was not a common name. There was a scene with an escape from a lab, I believe. not the book, but one that I am reminded of when I think about it is flowers for algernon. Perhaps the name its similar, perhaps not. 90% sure it began with an "n".

Book would have to have been written no later than mid nineties, and is presumably earlier.

I'd been googling around for an hour or more. Just found it. Rats of nimh and the name was nicodemus.

Sorry I missed this one, I'd have had the answer for you immediately. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is one of my all time favorite books.
