Enjoyed many of her books over the decades but just haven't gotten back to her in ages and should as it is usually a GOOD read. Currently I am swamped and also not having enough READING TIME....so many of the authors I follow have published at the same time AGAIN and I have so many downloaded automatically I don't know when I will catch myself up.... LOL...

I think I'm done with Roy Grace now. Glad I stuck it through to see the Sandy issue resolved (mostly) and I don't think I have the patience for some of the upcoming plot twists telegraphed in the latest book (strange connection of police boss and son/ongoing saga of serial killer from past storyline). It was a good run but getting tiresome for me. Plenty more on the TBR piles to take its place! :)

Oh, thank you so much! I was afraid I was alone in this! After reading all his books and all the Roy Grace I could not agree with you more! Too long as well. He just really gives to many thoughts and ideas to many words and pages. The stories are NOT crafted tightly enough and I actually was bored reading this and could easily put it down .... Sure enjoyed the series in the early days but yes, I am done too!

I gave up a couple of books ago, just couldn't take any more of the dragged out "Sandy" story line so I'm glad to hear it's finally been resolved.

Jess (mividadulce) | 4 comments Just finished reading The Borrowed by Chan Ho-Kei. It's a Hong Kong based detective mystery, not quite hard boiled or thriller type, rather like traditional mysteries like Sherlock Holmes. First I was a bit confused with unfamiliar names of people and locations, but the characters are quite lively and the story is very interesting. Great book if you haven't tried yet. Would love to read more from the same author.

Just started Sleep Baby Sleep #4. Detective Pieter Vos. June 1, 2017. Pre ordered iBook. .....one needs to seriously make allowances for the naive typical foreigner attempt to paint Amsterdam as a drug ladden, sex crazed city....sadly, the writer has been quite good until this fourth book, but now he is letting go I suspect in an attempt to make his series seem more gritty. In four and a half decades I've never seen all this as he portrays it, in our major elegant, cultural city!! What problems we experience from foreign tourists acting like wild children is indeed a problem.... I hope this book will improve or I will drop it and the writer.

RANT: I so miss the days before Amazon bought out GRs. Now I mark a book as read and get two emails within minutes analyzing everything and giving unwanted advice on what next etc etc. VERY intrusive and unwanted. Done!

Ah the VV series...very nice reads and IMO a good series of books. The curiosity of location continues throughout the series. I bought the two box sets of the tv films too and enjoyed that the actors really were in alignment with the characters in the books which I have read from start to finish over the years. There are 10 Van Veeteren books all in all. Barbarotti books series not translated yet.
NOTE two DVD box sets from Amazon of the Van Veeteren series.

HÃ¥kan Nesser has two standalone books out that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The Living and the Dead in Winsford Håkan Nesser, July 2,2015. Set in Exmoor. iBook. 5/5 **** √
A Summer with Kim Novac. 1998/2015. iBook. .....4/5 **** √
Always search by HÃ¥kan Nesser, or you will come up with strange and incomplete listings.

Steven Moore I don't know where to put this, so I'll put it here. The first mystery I ever read was The Caves of Steel, soon to be followed by The Naked Sun, both by Isaac Asimov. I'm interested in that cross-over genre, the sci-fi mystery. The last one I read was Adam-Troy Castro's Emissaries of the Dead. Can anyone add some novels to this list? I'd appreciate it. The combo fascinates me. I read other mysteries and thrillers too, but a sci-fi mystery seems to start with a tremendous advantage because sci-fi is already mysterious!

Evgenia Ziouvelou | 1 comments Just read The Labyrinth of the Spirits, the fourth and last installment to Carlos Ruiz Zafon's The Cemetery of Forgotten Books universe. I recommend all four novels in this universe to everyone, it combines all the genres under the sun, it reminds you of why you love reading, and it was literally life-changing for me.

message 1099: by Steven (new)

Steven Moore Jenny Zi,
I read the first two...in Spanish. Reviewed them both (on my blog, not GR) in both English and Spanish. It's hard for me to understand how Ruiz Zafon could continue because it seemed that #2 wrapped things up. If they're not too expensive, I'll check out 3 and 4--1 was borrowed and 2 was a gift!
I considered #1 and 2 to be homages to writing, bookstores, and libraries--an unusual theme maybe no longer appropriate in America? If I remember correctly, they also negatively reflect on the Spanish central government and positively on the independence-minded people of Catalun~a...readers can at least see where the animosity springs from.

Not usually a sub-genre (mash-up?) that appeals to me, but I'd heard good things about Great North Road and ended up giving it four stars once I tried it. Definitely recommend for an entertaining read. It's a chunkster, though!
