Devi (views_she_writes) Even Dead Men Play Chess by Michael Weitz is a chess based murder mystery. Do not go by the title of the book. Although the title in itself is not very catchy, the story is irresistible. A completely engrossing tale, it is a must read for all murder mystery / thriller enthusiasts. Check out my review at Even Dead Men Play Chess

B'burg Linda I finished 'The Cuckoo's Call' by Galbraith/J.K.Rowling a couple of days ago, and I really enjoyed it. Cormoran Strike is going to be a great character. Did anyone else picture the actor who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies as Cormoran?

Now I'm reading Louise Penny's latest Armand Gamache book, 'The Long Way Home.'

Devi (views_she_writes) Thirteen Suspects Thirteen Suspects by C.M. Okonkwo

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Check out the complete review at Thirteen Suspects

A sex filled murder mystery. The murdered victim had sexual encounters with 13 females, all of which are described in vivid details in his diary named "YOLO". The detectives investigating the murder comes across this book and thus the 13 characters are placed under suspicion.

The story is a murder mystery for the sake of saying. It is basically an erotic diary of a sex starved hostel guy.

Devi (views_she_writes) Herbie's Diner Herbie's Diner by L. Joseph Shosty

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Check out the complete review at Herbie's Diner

It is truly a short read, just some 60 odd pages. The story starts in the middle, where Actor Johnny Hardwood, who is being a detective, is sitting at Herbie's Diner, waiting for a suspect. And then the author takes us on a journey where the action is happening, at the same time, the background is also being described wherever required.

Truly a fun read, especially just a for a couple of hours, as it gets over by then.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Read the complete review at The Mystery of the Blue Dolphins (A Clarissa and Paw Mini Mystery, Vol. 1)

A very short murder mystery but with such an awesome punch which sometimes even a full fledged novel cannot deliver. Clarissa and Paw are absolute lovable detectives. The Saint Bernard Paw is a darling digger and Clarissa is a very intuitive owner. Together, they manage to solve a murder mystery which was considered to be a suicide at first.

Oh boy - I donʻt even remember when itʻd been the last time for me to be a month without any crime reads. I donʻt want to blame it on my braille learning focus either - so letʻs just see what I start next. Iʻve got a few non-crime audiobooks in Overdrive at 2x speed, but itching so bad for regular printed books. Just canʻt decide which one to read next (and of course itʻs more fun when itʻs cedar allergy season = very tired eyes so some days I just want to keep them closed all day)

Thomas (tom471) | 428 comments I have just finished Tatiana by Martin Cruz Smith

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars. Martin Cruz Smith's books are enjoyable mysteries. His Moscow police investigator Arkady Renko is a determined man in investigating a death already ruled a suicide. Tatiana was a crusading reporter and fell to her death off a balcony. Somehow Renko connects her death to a murder of an organized crime figure. His investigation takes him to Kaliningrad, a part of Russia that used to be Koeingsberg, Germany, prior to 1945. It is now an enclave of Russia, bordered by Poland and Lithuania.

One quote from the book that made me laugh: "Judges can be expensive...
They should put an ATM in the courtroom and eliminate the middleman."

A minor quibble--one of the characters drives from Moscow to Kaliningrad, and has to go through Lithuanian and Polish customs. This book is set in 2012, after Poland and Lithuania joined the Schwengen agreement--meaning only 1 customs check.

Mark Tilbury (marktilbury) | 7 comments I've almost finished Delirium by Joanna Penn. It is the second of a series of mystery thrillers with a psychological edge to them. The series features a reluctant psychic working with the police to solve some out of the ordinary cases.
Penn builds up the suspense brilliantly and both this and the first book (Desecration) are well worth a look.

Billys Boots | 5 comments Reading 'Converging Parallels' by Timothy Williams; the first in the Commissario Trotti series, set in the 1980s in Northern Italy (also written in the 1980s). The first in the series deals with corruption in an unnamed Italian city (on the river Po). Trotti investigates the kidnapping of a young girl while the country at large is exercised and traumatised by the kidnapping of Aldo Moro - the country's PM at the time. Williams is the winner of a CWA Award, though not for this particular novel. Am enjoying it very much and will read the rest of the series - highly recommended.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) Just finished Tapping The Source . Kem Nunn's much-feted debut surf noir novel is a moody, atmospheric evocation of Southern California surf culture before the developers paved it over, marred by some rookie mistakes. Expect to respect it more than you enjoy it or are thrilled by it. Four stars.

Ed Jackson | 3 comments I'm currently listening to the Kurt Wallander books in audiobook format in chronological order of publication. After I finish the series I'd like to watch the episodes that were broadcast on TV. Is it better to watch the television programs in the order in which they were broadcast or is it better to watch them in the order in which they were first published?

message 888: by CatBee (new)

CatBee (ecospirit) | 7 comments If you've read/listened to all the books, I don't think it matters. There are both a U.S. Public TV series and also a subtitled Swedish series (available streaming on Netflix, not sure where else). I think the Swedish series is much closer to the "feeling" of the novels, and thus I like it better.

We are currently binge watching the Swedish Wallander. Netflix doesn't carry the entire series -- we're watching it in Hulu. Hands down way better than the Branagh version.
