Is that the first Allingham you're read? The earlier books are much better, although I did like Tiger in the Smoke.

message 703: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Oakes (quinnsmom) I've just finished The Cemetery of Swallows, by Jean-Denis Bruet-Ferreol, aka Mallock. It's from Europa World Noir.

I felt the same way.

Kathleen Now I am reading Camilla Lackberg's The Stonecutter and finding it quite intriguing.

I couldn't get past her first book. It read like a mix of chick-lit and crime (to me).

I finished Till offer åt Molok, err The Second Deadly Sin by Åsa Larsson (GR pulls the title just in Swedish for some reason). Just brilliant stuff.
And now as idling very much, time for some old-fashioned Clive Cussler.

message 708: by Amy (new)

Amy Kurland (anykurland) | 2 comments I just finished Purity of Vengeance (Jussi Adler-Olson) and am just at this moment going to start Dead I May Well Be by Adrian McKinty. This is his first novel. I've read the three in his Troubles Trilogy already and now I'm curious about his first. Love him.

message 709: by Phair (new)

Phair (sphair) | 0 comments Just finished the second Sister Conchita and Sgt. Kella mystery One Blood. One Blood by Graeme Kent set in Solomon Islands in early 1960s. This one had PT109 incident worked into the story. I really like this series for the excellent look into a different culture and a view of the latter days of colonialism

Gerard Cappa Dirty Snow by Georges Simenon
Dirty SnowJust started, very dark and intense. Not at all like a Maigret story.

message 711: by Kay (new)

Kay | 4 comments Someone mentioned the Purity of Vengeance: Excellent book in my opinion. It is the most recent offering by Jussi Adler-Olsen. The whole series is excellent.

message 712: by Ken (new)

Ken Fredette (klfredette) Yes it is, but he has two more books ready to print. Jussi Adler-Olsen has The Alphabet House being published August 18, 2014 as a stand-alone and The Marco Effect: A Department Q Novel published on September 9, 2014.

What a few weeks! I have been trying to catch myself up with too many books downloaded but it has been wonderful and varied! Memorable will always be two books set in America that I personally consider literature!
Where You Once Belonged, Kent Haruf. iBook. 27/6/2014. 5/5 **
Stoner, John L. Edward Williams. iBook. 8/7/2014. 5/5**
I followed these by watching two films that really left me reeling with impressions. On The Road and Of Mice and Men!
Personally feels like I have been on a marvellous holiday ......

Lighter in the UK I enjoyed and will continue with book three when it appears, The Silkworm, Robert Galbraith aka JK Rowling. iBook. 25/6/2014.. 4/5

Now starting a book JK Rowling referred to as a favourite of hers in an article by Margery Allingham, The Tiger in the Smoke 1975 .....
Anyone have comments about it? Read a bit on wiki and curious....let you know.

message 717: by Ken (new)

Ken Fredette (klfredette) Reading the latest by Alan Furst. I like his style of writing.

Anna wrote: "Hey, I did read The Preacher by Camilla Läckberg a few weeks ago, and I had kind of the same reaction. Ok, but didn't grab my interest too much. (Too much personal drama etc instead..."

Excellent advice. In trying to locate the start of the series, I unfortunately started with "Nemesis" and had a major plot point from "The Red Breast" spoiled for me. The first two in the series, "The Bat" and "Cochroaches" were finally released in the US this year, too.

message 720: by Brian (new)

Brian Poole | 4 comments I'm reading something really old school right now, "The Return of Dr. Fu-Manchu" by Sax Rohmer. It moves very quickly and really does transport you into its world. There's something to be said for authentic period literature.

message 721: by miteypen (new)

miteypen | 16 comments Just finished Quentin Bates' Cold Comfort, which is the second book in a series set in Iceland. I read the first and third as well and liked them a little better. Has anyone else read this author?

Kirsten (kmcripn) Hey @Devi - will you pick one thread? Preferably one that has something to do with self-promotion??? It's getting annoying!

Back to the actual subject of the thread:

I just finished 2 A.M. at The Cat's Pajamas by Marie-Helene Bertino last night. A delightful book! Best read with jazz in the background!

message 729: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Thurston | 3 comments Currently reading Rest Area by Frank Cereo. I have to say it's one of the books that makes you think about what could happen when you go into a rest area. I don't want to spoil anything but it's a page turner.

message 730: by Devi (new)

Devi (views_she_writes) Currently reading "The Blue Virgin" by Marni Graff. It is the first in a series of detective books. I am still on the initial part but I am absolutely loving it :)

Dealing with Conflict at Work: 8 Keys to Communicate with Colleagues Who Drive You Nuts [Kindle Edition]
Thilan Legierse (Author)

Now free downloadable for the coming four days.
You don't have to have a kindle, you can get the kindle app on the Amazon ( USA, UK and Australia) site for your PC, Tablet, IPAD or mobile phone as you download the book.
Please share with as many people as possible ( in as many countries as possible). It is an easy 1.5 hour read and full of tips how to handle conflict in the workplace and in fact any conflict in general.
I would really appreciate it, that if you like my book you would give official feedback on the Amazon. The more downloads and the more feedback the higher the visibility will be. Feel free to share this post with all.

message 732: by Andreea (new)

Andreea Danel | 5 comments I am currently reading the 3rd book in the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear. These are relatively light mystery books with action set between the two World Wars but the plot and characters are beautifully developed. There are 10 books in total and after reading the first one I went and bought the remaining 9. I highly recommend them.

message 733: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I love Maisie Dobbs, @Andreea!

I've been listening to Thankless in Death (In Death, #37) by J.D. Robb . Today I plan on continuing Still Life (Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, #1) by Louise Penny and starting The Next Time You See Me by Holly Goddard Jones

Oh, I love Kathy Reichs' novels. Definitely tough to put down. And yes, conflict is all around us. A point I try to make to my fiction-writing students at The Writer's Center in DC. LOL!

Nancy Oakes (quinnsmom) Spring Tide, by Cilla and Rolf Börjlind. Scandinavian crime that while good at its core, tries a little too hard.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Overkill by Vanda Symon

Yay, I can contribute! By a NZ author, totally awesome start, but losing it's way a little in the middle. I'm hoping Vanda Symon will pull it all together n the end!

message 747: by Vered (new)

Vered (vered_ehsani) I'm reading It's Our Turn to Eat by Michela Wrong - a non-fictional account of the history of corruption in Kenya (where I live). It reads like a thriller, very entertaining and well written,

message 748: by M.H. (new)

M.H. Vesseur (mhvesseur) | 3 comments Steve, I wholeheartedly agree. This is my 3rd Martin Cruz Smith novel and I've made it a mission to tell everybody how good he is. Another motion picture would help, I guess.

message 749: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I started listening to The Shining by Stephen King (in the dentist's chair), started reading The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith on my Kindle, and continued reading The Next Time You See Me by Holly Goddard Jones from the library yesterday.

message 750: by John (new)

John Addiego | 11 comments Please add me to the list of Martin Cruz Smith fans. I think I've read all but one or two of his novels, and Wolves Eat Dogs is a great one. Does anybody out there love Havana Bay as much as I do? The beginning few pages are amazing in their detail and characterization. I'm new to this group, and I probably read more literary than mystery fiction. It is fun to hear what people are reading and why.
