message 52: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) I was stationed in that area once when I was in the military, it was really nice. I went to MOS school at Fort Meade.

C.S. Splitter | 979 comments Unfortunately about the only thing left there is the prison. The other businesses have left.

Yep, Frostburg was a party school even in my day. Thankfully, I was about 10 years ahead of you so I don't need to apologize for anything I may have said or done while drunk lol.

There's not a whole lot to do there except party :)

I'm from upstate NY. Anything below PA sounds southern to me.

You are exacty right. My family still lives there. we go up often to visit. The job market is horrible and it is over run with the prison....and it seems that a lot of the young people are moving out because they can't get good jobs....
No you don't have to apologize for any drunken behavior....besides i never partied.....I was a good girl, ;) LOL
I agree all that there is to so there is party , that NEVER changes....I rememer how thrilled everyone was when a super walmart came to town....of course that was after i moved away....
I used to wait tables at a restaraunt in frostburg...Sand Springs Saloon....sound familar?

message 58: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) So I just looked up Newburg because I live on the PA border and that's quite a commute between PA and Newburg. PA is a lot less expensive living expense wise than NY. Even paying double taxes people that work in NY and live in PA make out better financially. I find it highly amusing that you used the little I guess you'd say state slogan to describe how you felt about NY. lol. You know the whole I love NY campaign. It's pretty here, but if I didn't have the family connections in the area I'd head as far away as I could get if I could afford to. I'd like to live in Northern CA just to get as far away from the extended family as I could without leaving the country. If you've heard of the Southern Tier of Ny, specifically Corning as in Corning Glass that's the area we're from, though not the specifically that city.

As far as Fort Meade goes, I loved it because it was 30 min from Baltimore, 30 min for DC and 30 min for Annapolis which I think is one of the prettiest cities on the East Coast. The only thing I didn't like was the cost of everything, even in the late 90s they were charging $7 a ticket for a movie. Everywhere else it was $5 at the time. It may not seem like a lot of money but those little extras in prices added up fast.

message 59: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments I haven't been to fort meade but I have been to baltimore and dc and annapolis quite a few times. It is all very beautiful...with lots to do there.

Yeah, my husband drove about 45 min to work everyday and we lived in PA cause we coulf afford to buy a nicer house there. :) it was all interstate though so he said it wasn't bad.
I'm not much of a california girl....I am an east coast girl and I dream of living on a lake in my lake house full of windows. :) with trees all around me that change orange and yellow in the fall

message 60: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) The problem with lakefront in this area and I live in the Finger Lakes region so we have a lot of lakefront is there is no privacy, everyone wants to live on the lake so the houses are practically on top of each other. The weather sounds pretty similar in Northern California though I'll admit I've never been there, I've been to Southern California and I didn't much care for that, there wasn't any grass, there was turf, but not grass and it's just not the same. And I don't mean the kind you smoke, I mean the kind you mow. But the appeal of that area for me is no one I know lives there plus the weather doesn't sound too bad. I've pretty much always lived on the East Coast, even in the military I never got the leave the East Coast so it was pretty disappointing for me. I went in so I could see the world, I only got stationed places I'd already been.

message 61: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) My dream home involves no neighbors for at least a mile in either direction, privacy fences, a pretty forest and a totally cool "Green" house that doesn't really have utility bills. I wouldn't mind a private lake on the massive dream property but I'd definitely want a mile long driveway so no one could even see my house driving by. I want to live in an area where I don't know anyone have a garden and an orchard and for the most part never see people.

message 62: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments well that stinks for you. how long were you in?
i like living on the east coast i would like to travel but not live anywhere else...except maybe england. lol

My dream home is anyplace WARM! Few neighbors. And a "Man Room". Need a man room.

message 66: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) I was only in about 2 years because I was one of those promiscuous Marines. When I got pregnant and hadn't done my year overseas I didn't want to sign over rights to my kid for a year and have her forget me so I got out with an honorable hardship discharge. "Daddy" didn't take any responsibility for our daughter until she was 5 and even now he only sees her twice a year. He was a Marine too, the whole honor thing skipped over his mind in boot camp I guess. He told his friends I was making it up. Apparently she's my pretend daughter. Not that I wanted any sort of commitment from him, but not having to learn to be a parent alone would have been nice. Not giving up a job I loved to come home so that I wouldn't have to be separated from my child would have been nice. Not working two jobs to support a baby on my own when I first had her would have been nice. I don't blame my daughter for my bad choices, I love her to death, but the fact that I'm the only one who overhauled my life for her still bugs me a little. I didn't make her alone and then when he showed up when she was 5 years old expecting to have a say in things well I got a little upset by that. She's on visitation with him now. I just got a call that they gave her a kitten to bring home with her. Wonderful, I don't own pets but if I say she can't keep the kitten I'm the bad guy. Ed handles all dealings with her father, between him and his wife who makes him seem like a stand up sort of person we can't communicate without arguing constantly. So Ed handles it to keep the drama away from Kennedy.

Hi, Jenn, from the other side of the world. Sorry to read about your problems. They say adversity strengthens the character. If that's so, you must be one tough chick.

Sounds like you've got a lot of books in there, somewhere. Keep your chin up.

OH MY!!!!! I'm sorry!!
ATTENTION EVERYONE::

My editor is the most awesomist editor ever!! She is worth her weight in gold. :) Every writer on here should hire her! Your books would be better for it.
I just like to give her a hard time...but I would never hire anyone else.... :)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments Jenn-- you have definitely been through it all!! And i think you have come out on top and it sounds like you are an amazing mom!

message 72: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (bookishevents) lol well thanks. I don't know if I've been through it all. I mean there are a lot of people out there that have been through a lot more than I have. I'm just one of the many people in the world whose lives didn't quite go according to plan. I wouldn't have mentioned, but anytime someone asks me how long I was in I feel the need to explain why it was such a short period of time. I don't want it to look like it was an easy decision to walk away from the Corps. Mostly because it wasn't. But that wasn't the point of this post, you're awesome radio show was. It was btw stunningly hilarious and someone hit me over the head when it's time to come listen again. I'd hate to miss it.

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments Next week we are talking werewolves!!! YAY

message 84: by C.S. Splitter (new)

C.S. Splitter | 979 comments Nope, dangit! I had husbandly duties otherwise known as freeing my wife who had locked herself in the laundry room. Fifteen minutes of it was me laughing because she FREAKED! lol

Then she was mad because I laughed....but trust me, it was funny. Every time she yelled at me that it wasn't funny, it made me laugh more.

The door knob didn't even have a lock on it, the danged thing just jammed. I finally worked it open with a credit card. THAT is when she decided it was funny too.

I'll get to listen later today.

message 85: by Cassie (new)

Cassie McCown (cassie629) | 713 comments I think we did quite well staying on topic! A little planning goes a long way...LOL...

Splitter...your poor wife! Our laundry room has a door going outside also, so I think if one jammed, I could get out. But I am claustrophobic, so I would probably freak out if I couldn't!! I would have laughed afterward too, tho... ;-)

message 86: by Cambria (last edited Jul 06, 2011 10:06AM) (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments LOL. I got locked in the basement once. My two year old was on the otherside of the door and couldn't reach the lock...the hubby was out of town...
Yeah.
I finally managed to get her to pass me the phone through the cat door...but it didn't help. I live out of state from all my family and we had just moved to the area...so no friends yet...
I resorted to a hammer, a hacksaw, and a drill...... the door didn't make it out alive I'm afraid...
and when my husband saw what i did to his tools...well thats another tale
I still haven't lived it down at it was almost 5 years ago....

a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do....

C.S. Splitter | 979 comments I am listening to JournalJabber as I write this.

Underwear, zombies, vehicular dating tips, it's all there :)

New game show idea: "Are You Better Looking Than A Zombie?"

For the record, my answer to the question you asked of guys about repopulating the world:
Say no. It's a trap. It ranks right up there with, "I don't want anything for my birthday." Hear the words and then ignore them.

Besides, my first love is now...well...pretty weird. Damned facebook letting people track you down!
