good wishes and some major poo poos heading your mom's way.
Your request took me back to when my mom needed open heart surgery at the age of 83. I really feared for her life and prayed and cried a lot. It took her a long time to recover from the operation. Whereas everyone else who had the operation that day went home within the week, my mom was still not ready to go home at the end of 9 days. She had to go to rehab for 6 weeks. Toward the end of that time, it was like she suddenly woke up and started asking where she was and what had happened to her. All the time she had seemed to understand what was being done, but suddenly she had no memory of all the pain and suffering she had gone through and from that point she got stronger and well. It's really a difficult time for you but I have hopes for your mom to come through it and be stronger when she is over the operation. My mom lived to be 91. Thanks for sharing with us. We'll be looking for you to tell us how she is doing.Nancy
Merrilee, I can only imagine what anxiety you must be feeling right now. My prayers are directed toward your mom and a successful outcome for her surgery. Be strong and positive, and please let us know when there is news.
Merrilee - Prayers and best wishes for the surgery and recovery. I hope this will help your Mom's health improve! Does your Mom live near you? (I probably should already know this) Hugs to {{{Merrilee and Mom}}}Thanks for sharing the story of your Mom's surgery, Nancy Jane. That was a long recovery!
It was a long recovery for my mom, Ann! At one point I watched as an aide on either side of her walked her down the hall. She dangled between them like a Raggedy Ann Doll, with her feet just shuffling along. She pleaded, "I'm old. Just let me die." And my heart felt so broken. Two volunteers were with me and they told me that though this was hard for her, and really pitiful, that if they did just let her alone, she would die. They had to insist that she try to walk, and they told me their own personal stories of being forced to do something to help themselves after invasive surgery and how much they had resisted and hated it, but in the end they were thankful that they were made to move.Balance this story with the time later when Mom moved to a retirement residence and told me joyfully, "I didn't come here to die. I came here to Live!"
I have hopes and prayers for your mom, Merrilee, that she will come through her surgery with healing. I'm telling you about my mom because it's a story of hope for your mom. For your mom to name you as she did, a beautiful name of joy and gladness, she must have an optimistic and happy outlook and this will be important to her recovery.
The stories the volunteers told me about their personal experiences encouraged me that day and I pray that my mom's experience will encourage you.

Sending prayers your way. Thinking of you both today.Hugs and wishes for an easy recovery for your mom.
Things did not go well yesterday, they couldn't get her stable after she was put to sleep. They were not able to do the surgery.

Merrilee, prayers sent your way and hope your mother's surgery will go well. Hugs to you, hon.
I haven't been on the boards for over a week, just catching up on the posts.
June update on Fred:Fred had a CAT scan on Monday, Wednesday, we went to his Dr.'s appointment. The kidney tumors near the liver and kidney seem to be a touch smaller. Dr. said it was too hard to tell just how much. Dr. Turner said that there are two trains of thought of treatment: (1) continue medication, he seems to favor this or (2) surgery, which can cause problems by removing so much of the liver and risk factors like infection, blood clots after surgery, and not getting all the tumors and they end up spreading somewhere else.
I asked him if this was a cancer that started a long time ago or very recent.
His answer: Some are slow growing tumors and some can come on in a short time.
I've tried to put weight on Fred and his appetite has returned to normal. He did gain one pound this month. He now is 147 pounds.
He's been at work now for a month. In the beginning, he was so tired near the end of the work week. Now, he has more energy, he is about normal now. He trimmed the front shrubs last weekend. He still has no muscle mass in his arms and his legs look like someone that survived a concentration camp. Twiggy's legs looked better! LOL
I feel a bit down, wanted more positive news.
Seeing some of the patients at the Texas Oncology floor can be so depressing and at times my eyes begin to water. I wonder, if this is our future? We used to talk about where to go for summer vacation months ahead of time, but now I don't mention any plans more than a month ahead.
I do pray several times a day and try to keep those dark thoughts away. I do put on a good face around Fred and friends, but these thoughts are buried beneath.
Well, this Saturday we are riding up to Claremore, Oklahoma to visit the Will Rogers Museum and his birthplace on Sunday and returning sometime on Monday. Then, it's back to work on Tuesday.
I'm sure the ride will clear my head.
Thanks for your interest, prayers and concern,
Lorraine
Sounds like Fred is holding his own and has a good outlook. That's half your battle right there. Just keep on plugging away and loving each other and things will fall in line.
Lorraine: You are such a great advocate and support for Fred. I am so glad to read the update on Fred's latest doctor visits and the results of the scan showing no new growth. It is great for Fred to be able to do more and have more energy. I hope the ride to the Will Rogers museum is a great trip that allows you to let your cares stay behind you as you hit the open road! Hugs to you both.
enjoy the ride, lorraine. positive thought and energy heading your way. hang in there and know that we're all thinking of you.
It's a tough road, Lorraine, but you both have ridden a lot of tough roads and found the positive in them.
Lorraine, I always look forward to your updates. It is so great to hear about Fred's slow but steady progress. So many stories don't have such a good outcome. Please keep updating us, and let Fred know he has a collection of online friends he's never met who are invested in his continued good health.
I just joined this group recently and I until today I didn't know there was a place for prayers! What a wonderful idea, whoever thought of it. I am sending prayers to everyone in this group for whatever your needs are.
Very thoughtful of you Karen, this is a very special and compassionate group of people. Merrilee's Mom (and Merrilee), Carol's Dad (and Carol) and Lorraine's DH Fred (and Lorraine) are all in our prayers. Thank you. I definitely believe in the power of prayers. Sometimes that is all I have to give anyone, but I take it seriously.
My Mom is in rehab now. That's a good news bad news kind of thing. We are hoping she will be able to go home. There is nothing else to be done for her. Thank you all for the good thoughts a d prayers
Merrilee: Continued prayers and hope for your Mother's health; and that she is able to go home if that is where she will be most comfortable.
