Monika | 2 comments Read in the news today about fatal fungal infections in the wounds of Joplin Tornado survivors and it flipped a memory switch to this book I read when I was in high school, so 2000 at the latest, and likely a YA novel, in which I'm pretty sure the main character was dying at the end from a fungal infection in a gash in his leg. There weren't many people left on Earth, but I can't remember why. I think there were 2 characters in the book. I remember a deer drinking water and dying (possibly not related to drinking the water). I thought it was Z for Zachariah, but googling that makes me think I just read these two post apocalyptic books the same summer :-p.

rivka Does it have glowing (radioactive) rocks, and the rite of manhood is bringing one back?

Monika | 2 comments I honestly don't remember much of the book at all so I can't say with certainty that it doesn't have glowing rocks or a rite of manhood, but I think they're just trying to survive as best they can after everyone else has died so I can't really see them going off on a rite of manhood.

Darcy (drokka) | 211 comments I don't remember all the details about this book, I read it in the '80s, but I do recall there weren't many characters.
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) | 55 comments Could it be The Road? There are two main characters, a father and son, and the father is dying at the end and also has an injury to his leg. I don't think there are any deer, though. But most other people in the world are dead from a non-specified apocalyptic event.

Bargle | 1758 comments It's not Malevil. I've read that and the character doesn't die from a leg wound.

Lynne Schultz | 22 comments it's it Dreamcatcher by Stephen King? not post apocalyptic, but there is a red fungus that is killing a lot of things and there is wildlife in the book

Ella-grace Kirton | 7 comments Could it be Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood? The protagonist, Jimmy/Snowman, is the last human left on earth with a new species created by his friend who created the infection that killed everyone else. He gets a cut in his leg at the end that gets infected and left wondering if it has killed him.

Abby | 215 comments Monika, did any of these suggestions lead to your book?

message 13: by Michele (new)

Michele | 2488 comments Ooh, this sounds so familiar. I know Stephen King's The Stand has a character that dies of a leg injury but I think if it was Stephen King you'd have remembered that. Z for Zachariah does have a leg wound but I don't think it's fatal. At the time you read the book, do you have a recollection of whether it was a new book or older? How long was the book? Anything about the cover? Recall how old the main character was?
