Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments No, This isn't the place where i pull ur legs/or give u nick names. This is much milder stuff :P , u know the regular horror novels abt the ring, the necklace, haunted bungalows, ghosts stepping out of the TV, blood sucking vampires (not the kind that love humans, the kind that kills them)

it was horrendously engaging - something which is bad and disgusting, but you cant put it down unless you get to the bottom .
I read it when I was 13 or so (I should not have done that - its not a book for children - it has disgusting details especially aimed at Jesus and Mary, but my parents had given me full freedom to read whatever I want to)

Goosebumps is horrible. I read about a mummy oriented goosebumps book and found it boring, even for kids, maybe

message 6: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments dracula is the only one i read so far, and next is The Historian. I've heard ppl talking of the historian being better than the dracula, not for the horror, for the research, guess its more of a historic fiction sorts!

Elizabeth Kostova novel? I have it. I never thought it was a horror novel. Will have to read and find out.

message 8: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments yes the Kostova one, it's a historic research novel on the existence of vampires
My wife enjoyed it a lot, she is a big time Dracula/Vampire fan

message 14: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments Lecter series, American pyscho, all these fall under horror? I was thinking at least the Lecter series is detective fiction.

Aravind P | 1366 comments Anyone read Clive Barker books? I have played a Video game called 'undying', he had written the story for that game and that was good and scary.

message 22: by Shriya (new)

Shriya Hi can anyone tell me a very very scary book by an Indian author (friend is asking) Thanks.

message 23: by Kunal (new)

Kunal Sen | 506 comments Some of Saradindu's Byomkesh stories, while not from the horror staple, are downright chilling. 'Quicksand', 'The Phantom Client' and 'The Menagerie', are but a few examples. His language is simple, yet beautiful, his plots brilliant yet sinister.

It would suffice to look for any of the suitable translated compilations.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Aravind wrote: "Anyone read Clive Barker books? I have played a Video game called 'undying', he had written the story for that game and that was good and scary."

Clive Barker is a great horror writer. Neil Gaimen is another British author who writes good horror tales, especially those with a metaphysical bent.

Not a whole lot of ppl talking about horror I see. Probably too scared. ;)

message 31: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Haha, I was just going through some of your reads and saw that you seem to be quite a King fan. Do you recommend the Dark Visions anthologies? Or any other books that you think highly of?

message 32: by Anthony (last edited Mar 06, 2014 06:35PM) (new)

Anthony Rivera | 13 comments I am actually a very big King fan, but even more of a Clive Barker fan. To me, they are both exceptional, but very different in their own ways.

King I find to be a great storyteller. Reading him is like sitting down and listening to an old friend, or grandfather (or whomever) tell you about something they experienced a long, long time ago.

Barker, on the other hand, often verges on fine literature. And he takes me on a journey that is often quite fantastic and fantastical. What I do find with Barker though is: either you LOVE him, or you HATE him. That's actually what the person who turned me onto his writing said to me. :) I guess I am in the LOVE him category. :)

When it comes to the DARK VISIONS anthologies of short stories (Vols 1 and 2), I might be a little biased on those, as I am the publisher and editor of those volumes. :) BUT, if you like your horror more creepy, quite or tension-filled, I think you would enjoy the reads. And DV1 (the red-eyed one) was just nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for 2013. So, there are some folks who liked it, which I am grateful for. :)

What are your favorite books (novels or anthologies or even short stories) written by King? And what about Barker? I could literal babble for days about both of them. :) But I think one of my all-time favorite novels that I ever read was King's The Shining (I haven't yet read Doctor Sleep, but have it on my list.) And I very much enjoyed most of Barker's Books of Blood anthology series. And also his very strange Weaveworld and The Great and Secret Show.

message 33: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) I am a huge King fan too, though I must concede I haven't read novels by Barker yet. I have been reading graphic novels with stories by Barker, and they are certainly impressive. Therefore, Books of Blood are surely coming up soon enough.

The Shining is definitely one of King's best works and far superior to the Kubrick movie. I also enjoyed reading It, Desperation, and Christine among others. I like most of his short stories too, and currently I am reading the Dark Tower series by him, which is equally stunning in terms of the man's imagination.

I will surely try the DV1 anthology, and let you know what I think of it. :)

Thanks for your suggestions, and Clive Barker coming up after I finish the Dark Tower.

message 34: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Rivera | 13 comments I am a very bid fan of Barker's graphic novels too (well, graphic novels in general), as well as a lot of his own artwork (since we are talking about art. :) )

One of my favorite graphic novels series (not Barker) is The Watchmen. Let me know what you think of DV1. I would be interested to hear (good and/or bad.)

Which book of the Dark Tower are you on? That series is probably the one that gets overlooked by some King fans, and they should actually read them.

message 35: by Vinay (new)

Vinay (vinaybourai) | 7 comments "The Shining" was the first book that led me to believe that a book can scare you just as easily as the movies. I skipped some paragraphs in the book at some really terrifying moments. This was as good an introduction to horror books as I could have asked. I read more Stephen King after that, but "The Shining" remains at the top. I also liked the works of Adam Neville. "The Ritual" is a pretty scary book. "Last Days" also managed to scare me. The writing was pretty good as well.

The Shining is one of my fave horror books. The movie SUCKED in comparison. As a standalone horror movie, it is very well done. But as an adaptation, it missed the entire point of the book. I won't say more in case I spoil things. I'll just say this. Ask any Stephen King fan about The Shining movie, and you will see the smoke coming out of their ears :P

Here are some horror books that I read and enjoyed quite a bit.

This House is Haunted
The Ruins
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
Slade House
The Butterfly Garden
Bird Box
The Omen
Carrie

Some of these are mild but they have all stayed with me.

Mitchell one of my favourites and I have a beautiful hardback copy of space house and a stunning paperback of Boneclocks. Shall read in order.

Thanks for letting know 😊

message 44: by Shivon (new)

Shivon Shajeev (shivonshaji) The Butterfly Garden is pretty good. It wasn’t as much a horror as The Shining or Doctor Sleep. I admire King’s works. He writes in such a way that you cannot put the book down but also you do not want to read it at night. It is a very good example of un-put-down-able but cannot-read-at-night horror.
