Question about the ending!?! *SPOILER ALERT*
OK, its been a while since I read the book, but I believe Ash was purposely hiding himself from Meghan. He new if she saw him he would not be able to stay away from her. Ash needed to see one last time before starting on his quest to find away for them to be together.
I know they can't continually be together because he can't go to the Iron Realm for risk of dying and I know she can leave the Iron Realm but has to return because it keeps her alive but she manges to leave for a while to have meetings with the other fey So I just couldn't figure out why Ash didn't rush to her the first chance he got so that he could see her. Even if only for a little while. Maybe its just me being picky but it just seemed odd that he was hiding from her when he could come out and say to her "right we need to figure out a way to be together in the same place permenantly" lol
All I know is that I can not wait till the Iron Knight comes out!!! I also can't wait to read the new novella Summer's Crossing. It's in Puck's point of view!!! It'll be awesome!! Yaaay!
oooh i read Summers Crossing last night. It only took me about 40 minutes. It was good a good story. Showed the internal workings of Puck a bit better...

Ash wants to live in the same realm with her And with be able to see her All the time. Eventhough meghan can leave the iron realm. She did mentioned she cannot stay away for long periods of time.

You an still go and download both novella or if anything I have then both and I can email them to you

I think Ash will do every possible thing to be with Meghan but being with her only to see her in limited time will torture both of them furthermore.
In this case, I think Ash do not want Meghan to suffer more because there is no guarantee that when they see each other, they could let go.
The possibility of staying together and living a painful life that could kill them both caused by a mere single meeting has stopped Ash. But he did not give up. He is trying to find a way. Living in pain is acceptable if he can find happiness with Meghan by the end of the day.
Waiting for Iron Knight is killing me...
He missed her but he knows that he couldn't be with her in the iron realm. Besides, Meghan send him away away using his true name and then he made a vow:"And I swear, if there is a way for us to be together, I will find it. No matter how long it takes. If I have to chase your soul to the ends of eternity, I won’t stop until I find you, I promise.”
Ash decided not to be with her until he found a way to be with her forever. *awwwww*
For the next book, he probably trying to find a way to gain immunity towards iron. Thats the only way he'll be together. *faint*
Plus, Meghan is now a fae queeen. Like Oberon said, she's immortal now. So no rush right? Except if she get knocked up... A_A iron+summer+winter-fae.. now thats a possibility
and Iron Realm is a mixture of iron and summer glamour. The iron would probably have less effect on summer fae than a winter fae.

Meghan having a baby won't make Ash immune to Iron so I don't think that will happen.Also what would be the point for Ash to talk to Meghan when she went to the Winter's realm if he hadn't figure it out a way for them to be together? He probably didn't want to tell her about his quest and worry her needless either.
I think the ending was perfect.
The ending was what I had thought would happen and I almost cried finding out what I did, but it didn't happen. Then when Ash was like he'll find a way. I was like, AWWWWWWW!!

also to address the start of this post I thought it was weird Ash wouldn't at least see her at court and say I'm glad your not dead and what not. I mean I understand he can't be with her permanently yet and that he will go on a quest to find a way to become iron immune. I guess he just wants to wait till he has good news but I would think he would at least let her know he is still fighting for her instead she thinks he gave up.

Lucy - exactly!!! This is what puzzled me!! I know she used his true name to banish him from the Iron Kingdom and I know she can't survive long outside of the Iron Kingdom but if she can survive long enough to go to summer court to have meeting with Mab and Oberon and Puck then obviously Ash could have seen her there too.... just seemed odd to me to leave her thinking he had given up

i'm not sure but i think the reason he doesn’t come to court is because he's no longer a part of either court and therefore isn't one of the elect few allowed in the meetings. Puck is there because he's a fav of the summer king but Ash already made it clear that he wants nothing to do with the winter queen.

Meghan can not leave Iron realm, for it means she abandons her people. And her power keeps the iron realm survives. And she can not leave the realm without any company. Her people will not let that happen. Glitch will go with her and the Winter and Summer fey will kill him on sight. Oberon might take Meghan for what she is now but Titania will not forgive her for anything. It is never safe for Meghan to wonder around Summer realm. Ash was sent out from Iron realm because he could die of the poison and he would have done that to stay with Meghan. Meghan loves him to much to let him die. For her it is better to stay far from Ash as long as Ash is alive.
@ Lucy: Ash would not care about his own pain but showing up saying Hi will not only lengthen his pain but Megan as well. Ash would not do anything to hurt Meghan. And meeting for them with what they are now, Iron and Winter will make both of them suffer more.
ok everyone he cant say "hi" because seeing her is like seeing the memory of his first love remember!! i felt like crying at that but you know seeing megan again would only hurt him knowing he can not follow her where she goes and can not be with the women he loves only making him suffer more and allowing us to fell the drama and passion when he finally takes her in his arms and says megan im her forever and always but only if you will have me!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am SOOO glad you started this thread, Alison!I, too, was confused. I didn't understand why they couldn't have "day trips" to see eachother, but Ash could still go on a quest to be with her permanently. I kinda felt like banishing Ash permanently was a little unnessasary and was put in more for dramatic effect.
Without understanding this, it makes me feel like Meghan kinda ditched Ash. I'm trying to fight my feelings on this, but it still doesn't make sense to me. In Iron Daughter, Meghan wanted Ash and her to be together no matter what. But Ash knows Meghan, and himself, could be in serious danger if they are together. If I remember right, exiled to the human world was the nicest of all the punishments they could have recieved. But Ash ultimately chooses love and Meghan over his queen and court and duty as a prince.
But then in Iron Queen, its like their roles are reversed. Only this time, Meghan chooses her duty over Ash. This would make sense if I understood better WHY it had to be either one or the other. But I still don't understand why they couldn't have a long distance relationship of some sort until Ash could find a way to be in the Iron Realm permanently.
Don't get me wrong, I ADORE this series, I just really want to understand what I'm missing here!
Does anyone have a cited answer from the book, or from Julie? Speculation is nice, but so far no one's answers have been very concrete.

It is strange isn't it?I understand why she sent him away - if he had stayed he would have eventually died.
I understand why she had to become the Iron Queen - because if she hadn't then she would have died. The land healed her and that's subsequently what she became.
What I don't understand is why, the minute she woke up and was well enough to travel to other courts, why oh why did she not immediatly rush to see him.
It would have still worked for the story. They could have had the conversation... you know, the one that would have gone like this:
Ash: I can't survive in the Iron Kingdom but I love you.
Mehgan: I can't survive outside the Iron Kingdom (for very long) but I love you.
Ash: I'm going to set out on a quest to find a way for us to be togher.
Mehgan: Ok be safe...
Well maybe not exactly in those words but you get the gist.
As it is, she simply banished him, then didn't go to see him, making him think that she had given up on him and he just stood and watched her come and go into HIS world without approaching her or having any interaction.
It's just not in keeping with the characters and what we have seen of their behavour so far.
Don't get me wrong, Im still looking forward to The Iron Knight, very eagerly awaiting it... but this one thing just niggled me about Iron Queen. It made no sense!
You do have a point but dont worry ive alreafy read The Iron Knight and im glad they didnt end up together in the Iron Queen because reading the Iron Knight was so worth the wait...Believe if you loved The Iron Quuen you will totally love the Iron Knight!

I actually get why Meghan decides not to see Ash right away, and the whole waiting in the woods thing. Its too painful to interact with each other, and maybe part of Ash just can't go near her because of the banishment thingy.But why can't they meet up in the Wyldwood every so often? I think it'll help with the dramatic affect that they can't or don't see each other until they can be together forever.
But on technicality, I wish there was a specific reason that Meghan and Ash can't meet up in an in-between place in the mean time.
So its not so much that I wanted the story to be different, its that I wanted more of a reason than "just because they can't".
Though, as I've heard from others who have gotten hold of Iron Knight via netgalley, it IS definitely worth it!!

She sent him away so that he woulnd't die. He went away thinking she would die but he coulnd't do anything about it.When she then didn't die and was healed by the land and went to see the other fey outside of the Iron Kingdom and he discovered she didn't die, you would have thought that he would have been so happy that she didn't die that he went straight to her and embraced her and told her he would find a way to be togehter. She didn't banish him from her for ever, she just banished him from the Iron Kingdom so that he wouldn't die there.
It makes no sense that he avoids her and hides from her and makes her think that he has given up their relationship. I just don't get it. It didn't make sense.
Im really hoping there is another explanation behind it that is explained in The Iron Knight
Just say that Meghan can easily travel to other realm and meet Ash. She still needs to lead her people, the iron fey. She will not be a good queen if she constantly leaves the court. Her new court needs her all the time. And it also does not mean a happy ending for both of them. Ash wants to be with Meghan all the time NOT some short meetings. In Iron Knight, Ash knew why Meghan sent her away. They both knew the best. That is why Ash started the journey. Because he wanted something permanent with Meghan. He wanted a life when he can be with Meghan forever and ever.
She can't be with him only when she leaves the Iron Realm. It's not the same...
She doesnt need to be with him, she can at least acknowledge him
All in all, I think its just something all of us have to make an allowance for, for the good of the story. Obviously, some people didn't have a problem with it, and it didn't strike them as confusing. I'm happy for you guys, seriously, cause I don't like that I had this hang up. :( But I did, and so it's really great that we can have conversations like this to sort things out.For me, how I've justified it, is that it IS better for dramatic effect that Ash and Meghan won't see eachother until they can BE together permanently. Even though it still strikes me as odd, I'm willing to accept it for the sake of getting one more book out of the series!
But I think its important to respect everyone's opinion, and to know that just because someone didn't like one aspect of the book, that doesn't mean they are bashing the series.

Yeah I agree, this is exactly what Goodreads is for. To discuss this type of stuff and get other people's opinions etc.And just to make it clear, this issue was only a little niggly thing for me. It by no means took away from the amazing story of the Iron Queen. I loved every minute of it. It is hands down one of my favourite series' of all time and I can't wait to get my hands on The Iron Knight.

i love this series..it's one of the best YA books i've read so far! :D I don't really mind if ASH is still hiding from Megan because number one, we have to remember that using a fairy's real name is quite powerful and no matter how much he might want to show himself, you have to put into consideration that there is still that restriction. It might not be stated as matter of fact-ly in the ending but I guess as a reader, I get why.
If we look at the whole fairy business -it's all about trying to get around a request; finding loopholes not to get entangled into giving up your future child or your life or your next-door-neighbor's dog... How many times have Grim, Puck and Ash warned Megan to think carefully before bargaining?
In this aspect we see that despite everything, one can get around to a "rule" or a "bargain" and bend it a little. For Ash, he would want to see Megan but he cannot allow her to see him until he finds a way to be a different fairy -an Iron Knight. However, he does send her the necklace with the dog to remind Megan that he is not giving up and that even if he was ordered to stay away, he is still watching her.
I don't know if you get my drift but Megan can go see Ash but because of the command she has given and the power behind the "name" -Ash can never show himself to Megan no matter how much they want to or how often then can... THIS IS THE REASON WHY THERE's IRON KNIGHT...
I think it's because Kagawa will be showing us how the power of LOVE is the power above all else -even in the fairy world. The journey, i think is about Ash's way of getting not just around the possibility of being an Iron Fey but also, breaking the "command" to stay away.

Guys! Have you ever thought of the symbolism between the dog carrying the necklace to meagan and Ash? I just rralized it now... HahahaThe dog was sent away because it was falsely accused of attacking the lil bro rite? But then when ash decided to send the message to megan... It's with the dog meaning "return" hahaha perfrct symbolism!

Ok so I just finished the Iron Queen and there is something about the ending that I'm not following..
When Ash took Meghan back to the Iron Realm to die, she releaved him of his duty as knight and used his full name to send him away from the Iron Realm and never come back - therefore saving him from dying along with her... Ok I get that bit, however...
When the land healed her and brought her back to life, she then went and had discussions with Mab, Oberon and Puck, obviously in their kingdoms as they wouldn't have been able to come to the Iron Realm.
So WHY is she not able to see Ash?? I don't get it! I know he can't come to the Iron Realm becuase it would hurt him but if she can leave the Iron Realm to see Puck and co, then why not Ash...??
