I hope this question hasn't been asked and I missed it....but...
Do you plot out your book before you write or just have an idea and go by the seat of your pants type style?

That's what my husband calls me. I'm either a 'vile' or an 'evil' temptress depending on his mood. :)

OMG!!! LOLOLOL!
She has good taste!!!

I got hooked when someone suggested Long Hard Ride for good umm erotica. I like that your books give me that along with a good back story as well. Have you ever thought about not letting the guy get the girl and carrying it over into the next book?

Do you feel that their needs to be a love story in your books for them to be satisfying? Or is the steamy sex enough?

I'll be honest before your books I had no notion to read books about cowboys. (I'm from Scotland so find it a bit hard to relate to that lifestyle.) now, I'm addicted and love your books. :)
My question is, do you see an end in sight for your series? How do you manage to keep your stories fresh? You never seem to go over old ground! Also how do you determine who will end ip with whom?

I do think about writing other things, but right now I'm so bogged down with what I need to finish, those ideas are indefinitely on the back burner.

Thank you so much Alycia!

You mean turning the RR into more a series involving just one specific hero and heroine? No. I like wrapping up HEA at the end of each book and moving on to the next one. I get to satisfy focusing on a recurring character with the mysteries.

I've considered it -- that's all I'm saying :)
L

A temporary hold. I'm writing 5 full length books a year and that's plenty!

Yeah! Thats sounds good. Good thinking Lauren :)

That's good news and I totally understand!

Thanks for the rec Dee! I've wanted to try that series.

I consider myself an erotic romance writer, not an erotica writer -- the difference to me between the genres is an erotic romance is a sexual journey resulting in some type of commitment/HEA for the hero and heroine, whereas erotica is just a sexual journey.
So yes, all my stories have romance.

I see an end. The RR series will have 16 books total. I already know who I'm matching the remaining characters with...so that helps me plan in advance what their story arc will be.

Any hints on your matchmaking?

Hey Lorelei, Love your Work.. I have read every rough rider book and thats including Chasin Eight, My oh my Chase and Ava are close to my new fav couple :) Love the Wrangled and Tangled series as well.
I cant wait for November and December!!!
xx

Thanks Dee!

I am fascinated by your genre, because it is one I have never considered writing in. Like many romance authors do, the sex in my book is implied versus described. Although I have not yet read any of your works, I am intrigued, and plan to add you to my TBR list. My question would have to be (and I am sorry I cannot get this to bold) how do you feel knowing your mother, or someone else very close to you, might read your explicit scenes?
Happy writing!

I'm glad you overcame your cowboy issues and gave the books a try!
Speaking of cowboy issues...It's funny, I know contemporary erotic westerns aren't everyone's bag. No one can read the jacket copy of any of my books and expect they'll be about mamby-pamby beta men and the ball busting woman who master them, so it confuses me on why some people keep buying each new book in the series and then leave crappy comments and reviews all over the place because the book...was exactly as it was described!
I can't please everyone, I don't bother to try, so I'm happy to read that so many of you love the books just as they are and can't wait for more of my take-charge men and the women who love them :)

A lot of the level of steam depends on your level of comfort as a writer. If you want to write sweet scenes where the door is shut at the pivotal moment, that's perfectly fine.
I learned early on to tune out those phantom voices of "what will my mother/grandmother/dad/brother/kid's teacher/neighbor" think of what I write. It's the easiest way to box yourself in and not be true to the characters.
My parents don't read my erotic romances. They know I write them. Many of my family and friends have no issue whatsoever reading the really violent mystery works I write, but they are uncomfortable with sex. I don't understand it, but I accept that's the way it is.
Hope that helped!

How many more do you plan to write??

Good afternoon to you, ooops I meant good evening as it is 5:51PM here in NYC. Thanks for your insightful answers to my two questions earlier, regarding author's insights. My two que..."
Ken,
Yes, I've watched plenty of Eastwood movies, but no, I've not tried to replicate the "no name man with a past seeking revenge" -- my books are contemporary and these days even folks in Wyomin' frown on guys pulling steel and shooting each other in the street.
Thrashing? Sometimes. Depends on if they're tied up :)

In the RR series? A total of 16. In the Blacktop Cowboys series, I'm currently only contracted for the next two, so we'll see what happens there.

Being an erotica author do people sometimes assume things about you that aren't true or are your characters a lot like you - devishly wicked and a whole heap of naughty?

Thanks Jodie! Yes, a lot of people assume I've done everything I write about in the erotic novels. Or the characters are based on me. Umm...no.
It's funny that people will ask me (and my husband) about the positions and situations in the erotic books -- wink wink nudge nudge -- but no one assumes I've actually killed a dozen or so people like my characters have in the mysteries :)

Aww 16, i think i will cry when that happens. RR series is my fave series eva :) i cried heaps in chasin eight.
cant wait to see who ben is going to fall for, have we meet her yet??

LMAO!!!! Oh My Gawd!!!! People are something, I tell you.

That's like 5 months away Lorelei!!!LOL

You should make this a slogan, i swear i wish that every author i meet felt that way. It's an impossible task to think that everyone will like the same story.

When you write do you have a lot of material left at the end of the story? Things that maybe you our your editor discard or things that feel unnecessary to the storyline?

No Ang, you haven't met the lady I'm pairing Ben with yet -- and that's not giving anything away :)

I have to tell you after posting a question this morning I chucked the book I was reading (I was having a hard time with it so it was a pretty easy decision to make) and started LONG HARD RIDE! All I can say is...OMG!! I'm only a third of the way into the story but just wanted to let you know that you have gained a loyal fan. I've only just discovered the erotica genre over the past year or so and have to say you have jumped to the top of my favorite authors list. Thank you

Lorelei, I've read previous interviews with you in other websites in the internet. I found out that in the past, you have written mysteries.

Hey Ken, I'm still writing mystery for Simon and Schuster, right now I'm working on DARK MERCY in the Mercy Gunderson series.
I don't write violence any more for shock value than I do the sex scenes in romance. With my books, the violence happens right on the page, I don't exactly flinch when detailing it. I figure if I'm really writing about the worst part of humanity -- what damage human beings can do to each other -- then I should have the guts to show it, not gloss over it, or make light of it, but again, not glorify it either, because sometimes that's what those over the top violent scenes become; a parody. It's a fine line, and one that I do struggle with.
Since they're both series characters you can start either with BLOOD TIES, the first book of four in the Julie Collins series, or NO MERCY, the first book in the Mercy series.
L~

Thank you Rossy! Everyone gets something different out of my books because everyone's life experience gives them a unique perspective. So what one person reads and thinks "Oh my god that'd never happen in real life!" other people read and think, "God, I remember when that happened to me." All about perspective, so I only focus on the character's perspective, which ain't always PC out here in the wild west -- hee hee.

YAY Renee! Luring you to the spicy side of romance. And just think, most readers like the books after the first one the best :)
L

Glad you gave erotic romance a try, Tina!
Yes, many of my sales are from ebooks, especially since Samhain, the publisher for the Rough Riders series, puts the books out in digital form first for 10 -11 months and then in print.
I can also admit it's a lot easier for many women to buy a book titled RODE HARD, PUT UP WET, from an online store, so they don't have to be uncomfortable taking it up to the checkout counter, or have to cover it up when they're reading it on the bus.
L~

I usually say something smart ass like -- do you really think if I could be getting it on with 3 cowboys right now I'd be here talking to you?
Yeah, love the looks I get, followed by them scurrying away.

I've always written both romance and mystery. Many people assume I started out as a romance author and moved to mystery, because many writers do that. But my first romance was published more than a year after my first mystery. I like writing both. Separately. I tried an erotic suspense RUNNING WITH THE DEVIL, and so far it's been my least popular book, so I don't know if I'll continue with the RUNNING series when I get caught up with these series.
I have no choice but to write faster now. I overscheduled myself for 2011 so all I'm doing is writing and I'm still behind. But there's something very creatively freeing about immersing myself in a book to the exclusion of everything else. I understand a lot of authors don't have that luxury, because they have a day job, so I'm very grateful I can do that.
