In the Question #58 thread, Diane's shared a story about driving ~70 miles to obtain a copy of The Catcher in the Rye because the book was banned in her high school.

What I'd like to know is, what's the craziest thing you've ever done to get your mitts on a book. Was it worth it?

Chris (chrismd) | 408 comments I don't know what the craziest thing I've done is, but I can tell you the more work I've had to put into finding a book the more disappointed I usually ended up being with it.

Ann A (readerann) | 889 comments When we visit people, I like to peruse and read stuff from their shelves. However, I usually can't finish the book while I'm staying there, so I have to come back home and find it (as I don't want to steal from the hosts :). Twice I've come back from England and had to order the book I had started. The first one was from $40 to $400 (!) new, so I ordered the best used copy available for about $5.00. When it arrived, the cover was so worn you couldn't read the title, and the pages were yellow. I finished that sucker, though! With the second one, a new copy was not available and I think I had to pay almost $20.00 (+ shipping) for a used paperback! It's my crazy compulsion to finish all books I start. I wish I could stop it - life's too short! By-the-way, the books were Death of a President by William Manchester and By the Waters of Liverpool by Helen Forrester.

Amy | 181 comments I had just discovered the Shopaholic books, and read the first one. I had never read any form of chick lit before, so I thought I'd found nirvana - a book that actually made me laugh out loud! (And, we won't even discuss some of my similarities to Becky!) Anyway, as soon as I finished the first one, I found out that there were sequels out there, too!! I HAD to have them...N-O-W!! The only problem was, a blizzard was moving in.
I made my husband take me to the local mall anyway, except the book store there didn't have them in stock.

Did I mention I HAD to have them??? We were going to be snowed in - I needed my crack!

So, I made him drive me to a mall that was about 30 minutes away, in the horrible wind & snow. They were just getting ready to close due to the storm when I found my beautiful babies!! I snatched them up, we made it home alive, and I had them finished in two days.

Okay, so it's not great literature, but sometimes you just need something to make you smile, and these certainly did! (Although my husband still uses that day as a weapon against me whenever he wants something! LOL)
