Jazz If I had to guess, I would say it was during in the first book while they were in arena and she was nursing his leg. That's where she first began to care about him and whether or not he lived or died.

S.J she always loved him. she just didnt know it

Britney i think the seed was planted way back when he gave her the bread roll.

i think she realised how much she loved him when she was nursing him and she was soo worried she would lose him

Mockingjay I agree that she began when he gave her the bread but I think she realized how much she loved him when the Capital took him

percabeth Ditto on that one! That was around the time when Snow believed that she loved Peeta which is why Snow took him. ;)

Mockingjay Yes that is right

I think she fell in love when she thought he had died from electrocution and Fennick had to revive him.

Kerri I think it took place in the arena, but she didn't realize it, she was so conflicted because of her feelings for Gale. Peeta started loving Kat when he gave her the bread (why else would he risk that), but she had no clue at the time, and didn't really know what to think.

Allison when he gave her the bread. yup. that long ago. love at first sight

TEAM PEETA FTW

Kimberly i think shes always secretely loved peeta.. i mean really who doesnt????????????? she was just in denial because she so doesnt deserve him, like haymitch said ! but its true, always inlove <3

Anshu Sally wrote: "she always loved him. she just didnt know it"

I feel the same!

Janae I really do say that i can agree with this because I think that she somewhere in the back of her mind knew but hid it from herself and only brought it out when it was something that couldn't anymore be denied then her denying Gale.

I agree with (basically) everyone here; she fell in love with him when he gave her the bread. The whole, fateful incident affected her profoundly, and she remembered it years later, up till the Hunger Games and beyond. Katniss fell more in love with him during the Games. However, she was connected to Gale and felt guilty, like she was betraying him. So, she pulled away from Peeta. But I do think she loved him after all that time; it just required some time for her to both realize it and accept it. :)

maddie definitely when he first gave her the bread, but she really didnt know it then. i think she realized it when she was searching for him and found him camoflauged in the mud. both my favorite scenes.

Juliet He's the boy with the bread, she was always in love with him! She just didn't know it!duh!(wow I just sounded way teenage girl there but that's what I think so.....)

I fully agree!

Mike Jeremica I must be the only person to think the bread doesnt mean love to her, its about survival and owing someone. I think if anything maybe she had negative feelings because she was in his debt (kind of). Maybe im overthinking that section- FYI: I wanted to have this very discussion with another person today. Woohoo!

I think she started to love Peeta when she decided that he should live in book 2. Everything she did before that only confused her feelings. She had Gale as her ever present companion until the Games tore them apart. Then in a bid for survival she "plays" in love with Peeta. She continues to play in love with him during the entire first games and when she realizes he actually loves her she feels horrible. You cant feel horrible about someone loving you unless you dont love them back.

(might be overthinking/writing)

I think the decision to confront Haymitch with he plan to keep him alive instead of her was when she started to love him. Its not much but that willingness to sacrifice herself even though she has family and a potential love with Gale tells me everything I need to know about her falling in love.

maddie But she also had no negative thoughts as he gave her the bread, as well as when she was saying how and why she wouldn't forget the boy with the bread .

Sheri Mike wrote: "I must be the only person to think the bread doesnt mean love to her, its about survival and owing someone. I think if anything maybe she had negative feelings because she was in his debt (kind of)..."

totally agree. she might have loved the goodness in him due to the bread incident but didn't love him yet. THat to me didn't come in the final pages of the last book when she knew she loved his positive outlook more than Gale's rage

message 35: by Snow (new) - rated it 4 stars

Snow i think she fell in love in the second book when the 75 hunger games thing was announced
she knew this time only one could survive and she didnt want it to be him

message 36: by Carmen (last edited Jul 22, 2011 07:38AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Carmen Marie I think its possible that she began to care about him a great deal during the first book...possibly even love him without her fully understanding or knowing. But honestly, I dont think she realizes she loves him until book 3 when Katniss finally puts the pieces together on why Snow is torturing him. I dont think "love" was really something she wanted or needed. Survival was the main thread in these books...thats what she needed or wanted -- whether for her or the people she cared about. Developing feelings for him was just a side effect, and I dont think it could have ended with them together if they didnt experience or go through all the negative crap together.

Vivian I think she admired his kindness from the bread, she started feeling attracted to him during the first Games, and starting loving him in the second book when they started sleeping together. She showed her love, even though she didn't realize it, when they were forced in the Quarter Quell and she was willing to die to keep him safe. She was ready to love him when he was rescued. If he had not been tortured and his memories altered, they would have been together from that point.

i think it said in the book. i think it was when they were younger

I agree with you Kerri

message 41: by Alma (new) - rated it 4 stars

Alma Lazari I think that she was not in love with Peeta exactly. She cared about him, obviously needed him and loved him but was not IN love with him. Peeta was the one she couldn't survive without(as Gale said when he was talking with Peeta in Tigris's shop). But I agree that the moment he had gained a place in her heart was when he gave her the bread..!

Stephen i dont think she ever really did.

Marien Dore I think she was blind the whole time! The only sigh I really got of love from her to Peeta, was the end of the series when she said she does love him. But then when did the acctual signs or her thoughts came through? I didn't see much.

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) i think when Peeta was taken by the Capitol she relized how much she loved him.

Hydrangea I like what Sally commented about Katniss loved Peeta but didn't know it; I also liked everyone else's comments about Katniss loved him since his giving her the bread; that's symbolic. For me at least, in the first book, I think Katniss started to realize something more was there when she had that little spark in their kiss and wanted a second one but Peeta wanted her to rest due to her head injury. Then I got all thrown off with the Gale situation, but again for me, in the second book, where she is recovering from the injury and Peeta is drawing the herbs and she's fascinated with his blonde eyelashes in the sunlight. I liked that part A LOT. It makes me think Katniss was falling in love with Peeta then. I also liked what Alma commented about Katniss cared for Peeta and needed him but not exactly in love with him. I like what Carmen commented about love not being what Katniss wanted; it was more about survival. I'm not really sure what motivated Katniss to save Peeta in the Quarter games. I don't know if it was guilt or a not wanting to owe someone or not being deserving or just plain denying how she felt about Peeta. I also really liked what Vivien commented that Katniss was ready to love Peeta after he was rescued. I also think in the 3rd book, where they have that kiss with the spark again, Katniss starts to accept that she feels more for Peeta. A side note, Collins expects us to believe that nothing was going on between Katniss/Peeta when they were in bed together all those nights; that's a whole lotta self control going on for hormone infused teenagers. So I'm not really sure when Katniss fell in love with Peeta actually as there are a lot of good opinions out there. One thing I would have liked was if the author did more convincing at the end that Katniss did truly love Peeta rather than a Mr. You'll Do who's the only boy who lives next door approach...or maybe Collins could have given more details about the fragile rebuilding of their relationship; I was still thinking that Peeta might be capable of future meltdown to kill Katniss again. It would take a lot to regain my trust anyway. Honestly, I love and am fascinated by what all you clever readers/fans say and I'm so glad we have a vehicle like this to discuss these topics.

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) I'm glad I'm not the only one who LOVED the part with the long blonde eyelashes....I think their are little hints here and there (like the eyelashes)... In the first book when she doesn't want to lose him and when she feeling that stiring thing..oh yeah when she says she was happy when he said "So in a way my name being pulled in the reaping was a piece of luck.". she was like "Aren't we supposed to be pretending to be in love, not actually in love?". In the second when she says that she'd be broken if he died..How she so wanted him when SPOILER ALERT he was taken by the Capitol and when SPOILER ALERT she relized him much he missed him after he was hijacked...Some of these reasons mean that she loves him like you love a friend but...

Chantelle Sally wrote: "she always loved him. she just didnt know it"

agreed

Lea (Peeta's #1 Fangirl!) I like how she didn't know herself..

Me too... I think she's always loved himbut didnt know it. but I also think she's liked him because of the bread and him saving her life when they were younger. But she only noticed it in the end when he found out her love was all an act.

Leah at the end of hunger games when he walked away from her when she said it was all an act
