Agreed! Z's book is phenomenal!

I so agree with you. all the other books i read dont talk like the brothers do so i have something to laugh at when i read it. the word shitkickers is easy: really BIG Fing boots lol. think combat or doc martins!
https://www.facebook.com/JRWardBooksThis is the one I have and get updates from on my FB page.Hope it's what your after.

The slang really doesn't bother me you get used to it as you read I think. I have read heaps of other books with their own slang/language I actually read one the other day where they called humans "beaters" due to their beating hearts and If anyone has read the Downside Ghost series By Stacia Kane (awsome read by the way) the downsiders have their own kind of language.

when I first started the series I wasn't sure what ShitKickkers were either but now I know only real men...Vampires wear them ;-)
Lisa wrote: "They are also often mentioned in Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter books as a shoe wear preference for the men. Perhaps they're becoming a required wardrobe item for all yummy badasses. ;)"The "shitkicker" does get old after a while. I also noticed that all the men in Sherrilyn Kenyon books have "ticks" in their jaw. It is teribly distracting, because I cannot for the life of me imagine that kind of facial expression that is. Why not just say "he grit his teeth" or something?
All these males "growl" as well...but I can't make myself care about these words...I love the books anyway!!
I agree on the slang, but got over it. The thing that drives me nuts is that it seems like turtlenecks are a high fashion statement with this crew and not apparently to cover up bite marks. Hello...1992. I just can't seem to find any sex appeal thinking about the women or men wearing turtlenecks. :P
Krista ~Fhatal Attrhaction~ wrote: "lol I didnt have to get passed it I loved it!Everything the brothers say just cracks me up lol"
Me too!! Love, love, love the way they talk! Oops, did I overuse the word 'love'? Sorry. For real.
Lindsay wrote: "I agree on the slang, but got over it. Hello..."To me there is nothing sexier than a man in a black turtleneck and a nice pair of jeans. Worst turtleneck sighting-a guy I grew up with was sitting in Church with a turtleneck and a tie. His wife was with him. The only rationale I gave was that she was very angry with him (I cannot imagine letting my husband go out in public like that unless I was furious with him and refusing to talk to him LOL)
I always think of a turtleneck as a bit of softness on these "huge" wicked guys...something soft to run your hands over...with rock hard muscles underneath!!...yep! sounds about right!! LOL
ok, this is going to sound funny. Whenever I read the shitkicker reference, I am unsure whether they are a boot you would wear like combat boots, over the bottoms of the pants, or if the tops are inside the pants. Is that ridiculous or what? lol
I think they'd look tougher if they were worn like combat boots..just seems a bit effeminate under the pants!!
yeah..big, tough, handsome, hard, sexy, fangs, long hair, weapons....and "shitkickers"!!! What more could a girl ask for? ")
Elayne wrote: "yeah..big, tough, handsome, hard, sexy, fangs, long hair, weapons....and "shitkickers"!!! What more could a girl ask for? ")"I TOTALLY agree Elayne.....works for me!
I kind of picture in my mind a 'shitkicker' as a boot similar to the boots from the '70's'. You know the ones with the high platforms. The kind Gene Simmons wore in KISS.
I have some shitkickers as well. I was calling them that before I ever read (and fell in love with) this series. I guess that's why it doesn't bother me. Haha
I always think of them as really big, bad boots that could do a lot of damage to the enemy, when they're kicking the shit out of them! As I'm sure the brother's do!!
Everyone has their own taste in reading matter, its down to the individual. Just because you couldn't get away with these books and found them profane doesn't mean they're not good reads. We, who are fans of the author, love the type of book she writes, these are "big, bad vampires" remember and I would be surprised if not disappointed if they didn't use some choice words! Its not real life, its fiction...nothing like my own life...thats why I read it!Sorry you didn't enjoy this type of book..I think you missed out on a treat. However I hope you enjoy what you do read...any reading is "good".

I too, think she missed out on such a treat.
It may not suit you Debra, just because the series has a big fanbase doesn't automatically make it to everyone's taste. I just feel that we should be open minded about fiction, it is after all, make believe.I enjoy this type of book and many other types as well, I've been reading a long time, but I'm aware we don't always like the same things in the books. If you don't like swearing or violence or sex scenes then these books are definately not for you.
Actually anything past contemporary I think for most people is not a good choice if they aren't fans of slang, violence, and certain kinds of sex. As I know for myself that I've read quite a bit of urban fantasy and paranormal romances before reading Ward's BDB books. But there was still that first bit of edge to it that I didn't like. Which wasn't the slang, but mainly the fact she was writing about some random set of people having sex in an alley and neither of them was the main character. After reading that I thought that was kind of crude. Cause although it happens in real life, I didn't appreciate reading it in my romance story. But I got over it and just moved on as the story got wider and more interesting as time went on. As for the shitkicker convo, I actually looked up the name brand of boot that Qhuinn first gave JM after he first transitioned. And saw boots like this-http://www.newrockstore.com/zona1/cat.... So I wouldn't imagine their leather pants could fit so well into a pair of boots like this. So I think they would go under the pants and be sort of like boots a guy might wear when riding a motorcycle maybe. I could also see Kell putting foot knives in a pair for the DHs. But with the varied styles each DH has, I can only imagine how long it takes him to figure out how to get a knife or throwing stars hitched in various coats or hats or whatever.
As I said..everyone to their own.If they put knives into the boots it would be impossible to get to them if the boots were under the pants. Never mind though...I love the stories for the "big, bad brothers" not what they're wearing.
I know, I was just sharing my thoughts on everything. And I was saying that their pants are in their boots because I thought I recalled at one point that it said in one of the books that the BDB dudes have dagger holsters anyway. So they don't need to reach for a dagger out of their boot anyway. So just saying.
I think we're all wondering where they hide their knives lol....not that they need them much, as big and bad as they are!!^.^
haha.. yea JR Ward uses "shit kickers" a lot instead of the word "boots" and she also uses a lot acronyms.. i have to look up most of them.. smh
Oh I know. Past the typical acronyms ya see online, and the usual Shit Outta Luck, then I'm a bit clueless. Although guessing is a bit fun at times too, lol.
True Aestas. But I don't think most readers of a series always check back to the glossary so often. Not only that what about those that don't have access to the companion book? They are still kind of clueless unless they can guess what she means.
It must be a where in the world you come from kind of thing...I and everyone I know who have read these books have never had any kind of problem with the wording, unless I'm just an easy reader and don't have any complaints about the books I like!
Dhfan4life wrote: "Oh I know. Past the typical acronyms ya see online, and the usual Shit Outta Luck, then I'm a bit clueless. Although guessing is a bit fun at times too, lol."LOL I agree! They don't detract from the story line at all. I can kind of breeze over them and just enjoy the book.
I would say has more to do with how often you text or abbreviate things than where you come from. Cause as I pointed out I can understand most of the acronyms. But I don't like texting and never do it. So for most people seeing SQL or UMF or whatever in a text message it is pretty obvious what it is. To me and maybe most others that don't break things down to a few letters all the time, it does make is a bit more difficult. Beyond that the slang and other stuff doesn't bother me.

Oh well yea if I can't figure it out I breeze past it too. I just wanted to point out to Elayne that I'm not living in a cave or something just cause I can't figure out the acroynms. Just from small town Ohio and don't text as much.
Well I'm from England and not so young any more but I do text back and forth with my daughters..its a way of life now..but I've gotta say I don't know all of the acronyms..especially the ones mentioned above!! I still use the Queens English at times..lol
I still imagine a "shitkicker" to be a kind of fighting aid as in a type of combat boot! Thats the discussion subject after all.
Haha, SQL and UMF are made up. But see not everyone can tell that or not right of the bat though. And I shared a link to the new rocks Qhuinn gave JM. Those look to be shitkickers to me and better fitting to their personality. More so than the traditional combat boot.
