Really? Who says that? One time is too many to see this word in print. Only 15 year old boys use this word. I don't get it. Please tell me it stops. Because other than that, and the popular music refrences (well popular 5 years ago anyway) I'm enjoying the book and would like to read the series.

There are a couple over-used words in the series, but I wouldn't let that stop you from reading them. They are fabulous nonetheless.
Totally agree with you C.D. Its just the way the brothers talk. I think that they are not used to having to many females in their lives so they talk like frat boys sometimes. But the series is GREAT and I found that it didn't take long for me to overlook the small things. SO I hope you'll continue with it!
Lolita, I totally agree with you! Infact, a lot of the slang gets on my last nerve, but the story seems pretty interesting and it seems to be getting better and I'm only starting book 3. :)
Yeah I seem to be getting over it. I just ignore it, and I dont event know most of the rap refrences. But the 2nd book is awesome and I can't wait for Zsadist's story in book 3!
LOL, true! (hahaha! another word that is over used), ignore it and move on. Never heard the word before reading the series :)
in the later novels "verily" is another added to the list of overused words.. but I still love this series.
@InnocentKaos and Lolita, Zsadist's book is by far my favorite. Yum, yum, and, oh yeah, yum!Verily, the word "verily" drives me nuts.
I myself LOVE the way the brother's talk! it makes me laugh and its so different then my normal reads! This is one of my all time favorite series!!!
I always believed they were boots able to kick the shit out of anyone not wearing them, cousins with F-me pumps.
I agree with Jo. I always thought 'shitkicker' was a term-of-art for a heavy work boot. Actually, I just looked it up and my dictionary had it listed! Huh. I also sort of agree with Krista...I think the dialogue does make the series different. The problem is that it can, and often does, go wrong. Oftentimes I think Ward is trying to sound keeeeewl and she comes off as wannabe.
I had to get past the way they talk, too. But once you just accept it, and get into her world... They are some of the sexiest heroes ever put on paper. Wait until you read Zsadist's book!
It's an actual boot and I downloaded it to my profile with the hopes of putting it here, but, alas, I don't know how to do that ;(
this is what id call a shitkicker:) I actually have a pair of shitkickers at home that I wore for a halloween costume:)[image error]/>
O_O Me, staring with awe and wonder at the fact you posted a picture within a thread because I have been trying forever!!! (I think she is mocking my lack of ability :P )
lol noooooif your not using photobucket just right click the picture and copy and post whats in the properties
[image error]
so before hand it should look like this
I hope that helped lol
i have to admit, that it took me about 2 books to totally ignore her brand name references and shitkicker usage. those references are getting fewer as the series progressed.

As for language, I do think she has a wanna be feel and it is bit impractical, the brothers all being over 100 years old speech patterns don't change like that.
Never thought about it that way Jo. You're right. I wouldn't expect a character to exclaim:verily, my brotha! ; )
I always found it weird that the brothers are hundreds of years old and speak in slang but sometimes use the "old language" as well...but the stories are just too great for me to focus on the over-use of the word "shitkickers"! Readers who read this series decades from now will probably have to Google some of these terms to understand...LOL If Google still exists by then...
I like the combination of old world speak and new slang. It shows their age but also says that they're still as with it and capable now as they ever were.

it is hard to get over the sang i feel, but it is great
I'm on to Butch's book now and I think Zadists book was by far the best! And so call me a moron, but this whole time I was thinking 'shitkickkers' was referring to cowboy boots. LOL You know cause you wear them on the farm around the horse shit. At least thats how 12 year old suburban kids from Texas refer to cowboy boots. I was wondering why they all wore cowboy boots.
I think the word shitkicker is firmly entrenched in their vernacular, but as more women come into the story it isn't used AS much...but still a lot.At a recent signing, someone asked what a shitkicker is. J.R. Ward said they are the steel toed Harley boots. Yum! *lol*
They are also often mentioned in Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter books as a shoe wear preference for the men. Perhaps they're becoming a required wardrobe item for all yummy badasses. ;)
i like that she has her own lingo. and with how big and kick ass the brothers are, i just cant imagine them wearing 'shoes'... eww. they totally need shitkickers. and i agree with the above post: shitkickers are another weapon for them to kick the shit out of their enemies with.

I don't know, I just have to look past it and enjoy the books. Out of Feehan, Kenyon and Ward, Ward is definatly the best! Feehan you can only read periodically, I've found and with Kenyon...Well with Kenyon I really wanted to shoot myself at the cringiness of it all. Has anyone read the prequel book with the kid? If that doesn't scream, 'YOU ARE NOT THAT YOUNG ANYMORE!!!', then I dont know what does. But yeah, Ward is definatly awesome! :-) Still uncomfortable when my friends want to know what I'm reading. I now have two of them who ask at the most inapropritate times if I'm reading porn. I can't look at this one guy in the eye anymore.

LOL You know ca..."I agree there! i had to google it!! and it said cowboy boots, but the pictures ones the girls have posted look more like what the "boys" would wear.
I love these books, the characters are amazing, and just yummy. But I had a major problem with (in the later books) thiiiiiiis and thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat going on. drove me nuts! I didn't mind all the brand name dropping, you just get used to it. I found in the start, I couldn't stand John Matthew, but finished up, with his book being top of my favorites list.
Another Must Read is V and Bella,s short story," Father Mine" also "Wrath and the letter Opener" I haven't read it yet, but gather that it's relevant to the story line.
Has anyone read "The story of son"???
All in all an absolute must read, and the re-read series.
I would think with the langauge that in order to blend with society you would have to pick up slang and other "age appropriate" terms. Otherwise, they would all stand out if they were "hither, whither, thithering" through life instead of here where and there. People come to the South and within a couple of years, we'll have them saying yall and fixinta=fixing to=going to/about to. Especially if their daily interactions depend on people not perceiving them as a Yankee.

I agree i love this series and i'm only on book #3. Can't wait for Z's story.
I use "true" all the time, have done for years! Love the language the brothers use. makes each one an individual
♥☆♫★♡ Kathy♡♥☆♫★ wrote: "Feel me? have to know someone pretty well to slip that into a convo!! lol!"True that...or they may take it the wrong way :))))
♥☆♫★♡ Kathy♡♥☆♫★ ,yeah I wouldn't get too excited about 'Story of Son' I'm afraid, it was a bit awful and did not really fall into the world of these warriors. I'm afraid I cringed the whole way through.
The "slang" that the Brothers use is not unfamiliar to me - it's been around forever. I just think these books opened up a new vocab to the peeps. It's just like the "valley speak" from the 80's (totally dude). I love it. Feel me?
I guess my biggest pet peeve with the slang is they tend to speak so similarly. Sometimes, I can't differentiate between each Brother's "voice". I get that in certain circles, everyone will use the same slang, but it doesn't hurt to mix it up a little. Brother A can use "What up?" and Brother B can use "True". Just sayin'... : )
This was posted on JRWards facebook page....... WOW!!!J.R. Ward
His slut of a cousin. His cocks***ing, suit wearing, Monte Blanc up-the-a$$ cousin, Saxton The Magnificent, was standing next to the Queen, looking like a combination of Cary Grant and some model in a goddamn cologne ad.
Not that Qhuinn was bitter.
Because the guy was sharing Blay's bed.
Nah.
Nope. Not at all.
The cocks***ker.
