I think she has to bring him back. I know I wouldn't continue with the series if he wasn't apart of it.

I hope she does. It was too sad an ending, especially since we had waited for them to finally accept their feelings for each other, then bam! He dies. I bet there will be some magic involved bringing him back.
When he died, I cried so hard! And then I got mad! I read all those other books waiting for them to get together and then he dies! I only gave that book one star. I may change it if the next book brings him back.
I may be the only one, but I don't want Ethan back. He was an extremely flawed guy and Merit deserves better. His death offers a whole host of plot opportunities. This series is not a Romance, it is Urban Fantasy! Merit staying with Ethan would be a dead end.
I like what you said Eleanor! you actually make a god point. I would love to see what the author does and how she either introduces a new character or bring back Ethan...Maybe he does come back but not knowing Merit. Essentially, she may bring Ethan back but in a new body. Much like what JR Ward did (dont want to say more for those who havent read her books)
Most UF series do end up having a couple having a HEA. I think the most I have read was after 5 books. The series continues and there relationship develops. This is my favorite part. How many more books would you wait for the HEA to happen? I mean, I enjoy the struggle the couple goes through to get together but only for so many books.
I cried a lot when she killed him off. Couldn't beleive it. Will be intrested to see where she goes with the books now though. Could he be a ghost? Who knows.... Still I feel a little cheated that she killed him off. I expected him to come to the rescue, but not like that! Is it possible to mourn for a fictional character?
I have never cried wo much reading a book but in the end he is dead I get a bit frustrated when authors bring back dead characters like for example Jane in the Black Dagger Brotherhood I love the series but that sort of ruined it for me and now I can't stand her. I would also like to see if anything comes of Merits relationship with Jonah.
... Why am I having such a hard time computing this?? Jesus Christ. I was seriously so into the book I had to read that paragraph over and over again. And if it weren't a library book I would be in real danger of ripping the pages out to do my own rewrite! Oh, my God I am totally in shock LOL.Never happened before... not while reading, anyway.
Even though secretly I was rooting for a blooming romance between Jonah and Merit, Ethan still didn't deserve to die! It's not Chicagoland Vampires WITHOUT ETHAN!!!
Will be very interesting to see where Neill goes with the series now.
Oh, and slightly off topic... Morgan Greer SUCKS! How did he go from some hot, suave, sexy vampire guy to this petulant, childish, moronic idiot of a man? I get that they broke up, but am surprised that it was enough to give him a complete personality makeover. Disappointing. I quite liked him in the first books...
Oh I hear you I can't stand Morgan now he is acting more like a 3yr old who had their toy taken away not like a master vampire. Unless something changes and he grows up I don't know how he can lead a house.
Noooo! Ethan has to come back. He is such a big part of Chicagoland Vampires. Not just Merit's love interest. I was upset for days after reading this. I had plenty of rants and cried. Now that it's been awhile I have no doubt Ethan will be back. I just hope it's believable. As far as Ethan being flawed, most people are. I prefer to read about characters that seem real, even if it makes me crazy.
I agree that Morgan sucks :)
I wanted a big showdown with Celine and Merit and didn't get that either :(
Yes, I agree! I love that Ethan was flawed. I hate it when you read a book and the characters are just so perfect. It takes away from the integrity of the book - even though it's about mythical creatures such as vampires LOL.And I was looking forward to a big thing between Celina and Merit also. I tseemed like it was building up to something and then in the end, it was kind of... anticlimatic. Oh, well. Least the bitch is dead now. Will be interesting to see how Malik runs the house and who he appoints as his second
I just finish this book and i already miss Ethan. He reminds me of a lot of jerks now days but its true. And he was willing to change for her and it just broke my heart that he's gone!
I think judging from the vision Gabriel showed Merit where she saw a pair of Green eyes that were Ethan's but not, he comes back in some form or other... It will definitely be interesting to see where it goes.November can't come fast enough!!
I like the series a lot but without the Ethan Merit spark - there are so many other great stories- I honestly don't know if this one has enough going for it.
I must admit that when I first started reading the book I found no interest in it. But as I read on and Ethan got involved it was like magic in the air. After that I couldn’t put the book down. I went to work anxious to get home and start reading more. I finally got to book four in hopes that Ethan and Merit finally established their relationship and BANG he dies. WHAT!!!! Was that? I didn’t sleep I was just so mad, sad and actually cried Ethan and Merits love sparked the book by like 100 percent he has to return she cannot end up with someone else. Come on Chloe Neill PLEASE bring him back. I don’t think I can read on if he doesn’t. We can all agree that the book will not be the same without him. I kept reading the last part of the chapter when she wakes to the sound of his voice calling her. I hope that’s a hint of his return. I am anxious for book 5 now maybe too anxious. I love your series but would LOVE it more if Ethan returns.

I think he is coming back as an angel. Really, I found him such a nice character, committed, caring and good... When he died I felt really sad, as if one really nice acquaintance had passed away.
Plus, not to forget that the evil Mayor is a demon, so who better to be his nemesis? And I think I read somewhere that among the supernatural population of Chicago there are also angels...
I hope he becomes an angel a la Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter's Series), those are some seriously yummy specimens.
I think he'll come back. Ethan and Merit's relationship has been developing in 4 books. With his death, there would be a lot of possibilities, yes, but why would an author spend 4 books building a relationship as complex and heart-breaking as theirs, and then just PUF, Ethan dies? Doesn't make sense. There will be a lot of complications, that I have no doubt of, and Ethan may not come back in book 5, but I'm positive that eventually, he'll return somehow.
Chloe Neill made us fall in love with Ethan so deeply.. it's the same thing as Vampire Academy. If Richelle Mead hadn't brought Dimitri back as a Dhampir, what good would it be? Sure, Rose would be with Adrian, but we fell in love with Dimitri since the first book. The series itself brought us to him.
Not to mention the fact that Ethan's death was way too weird. He was staked, he was feeling a LOT of pain, but his eyes were green, not silver. And then there's the dream, and his voice calling out for Merit...
Don't know... All I know is that Ethan has to come back, =)

I read Vampire Academy lOVE LOVE LOVE the book Richelle Mead is amazing, she actually continues the series but through Sydny.. You should read it. I really hope that your right about Ethan, I am still so upset about his death... Funny on how we can get so attached to the Characters. But i have faith in Chloe, she is an amazing author she'll bring him back :) I hope, we all do.
OOh, Bloodlines, yeah, I read it! So good! I missed Rose's POV, but it was still good =PYes, exactly! I don't think there one single person who have read Hard Bitten and didn't cry when Ethan died. Or when Malik stayed with her, mourning over him. =S
I think there are too many hints that he'll come back. In addition to the already mentioned dreams, we also have Gabriel's vision with the green eyes that were everything like Ethan's and nothing like his. The angel theory is interesting, but I'm putting my money on some sort of magical ceremony where they resurrect him from his ashes. They made a point of detailing how the ashes were carefully collected and interred. I theorize he may come back without his memories though - sort of a clean slate, which would explain the eyes being different in the vision. We'd get a less worldly Ethan. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Hopefully if it goes that route he'll be able to get his memories back slowly.I truly hope you find out something about Ethan’s return in Drink Deep. I’m not sure I could cope with another few months of suspense. Please, Ms. Niell, throw us a bone here! : )
Only a few hours to go until Nov 1. YAY!

He really is amazing! and if he doesn't come back i feel like the rest of the series would be missing something. Sure he was a total *** but he's a HOTT *** who genuily cares about Merit. Come back Ethan!

Yeah he is an ass at times but you gotta love him
So when I finished the forth book in the Chicagoland vampires series I was upset they killed Ethan offWell just finished the 5 book and sure enough Ethan is back which makes me sad because I fell in love with the character Jonah.
I am just never happy (ha ha)
I loved the book, and i loved how it ended. I am just super nervous that she is going to eventually take him away again, because Mallory might have control over him.
I am so anxious for the next book.
I am happy Ethan is back, I loved their relationship even though, Jonah was growing on me.
I love Jonah, and i honestly do not think that this is going to be the end of Jonah & Merit, even though Ethan is back. We shall see !!! ;0)

Agree! I love Jonah too
I'm so glad I am not the only one who loves Jonah. Don't get me wrong I like Ethan too but, I think Merit needs to explore the connection she feels with her soon to me partner Jonah...
Totally agree about Jonah :-) Don't get me wrong, I love Ethan and was sooo upset after the 4th book...but now I am very torn!! Eager to read the next book...it's going to be a long wait...LOL!!
Tammy wrote: "Totally agree about Jonah :-) Don't get me wrong, I love Ethan and was sooo upset after the 4th book...but now I am very torn!! Eager to read the next book...it's going to be a long wait...LOL!!"That was my feeling exactly. I was really starting to love Jonah and I thought that the author was doing a good job exploring the way that Merit was healing and moving on. When Merit and Jonah touched and felt the tingle I just knew that he was going to be her guy. I was totally thrown for a loop when Ethan returned. Of course I love Ethan and cried like a baby when he died.
I love Jonah too but I think she has something big in store for merit and ethan. Can't wait for the next book
I was so SAD when he died he was my favorite character. They just killed him ::sigh:: I was crying, I really really hope they bring him back.
I L-O-V-E-D the ending of Drink Deep! I am sorry about you Jonah fans but Ethan is back!!! Hahaha. I actually did a happy dance after reading Drink Deep.I know a lot of people like Jonah and I agree that he seems like a really good guy BUT, Ethan is a great guy/vampire master. No one can deny that Ethan's love for Merit is on another level, he died trying to save her. What hasn't he done for her? I know he made that stupid mistake of breaking things off with her in Twice Bitten but he has more than made up for it. Ethan and Merit belong together, Merit even admits it when she says "I felt as possessive of him as I'd ever felt about anything, sure in the bone-deep knowledge that he was mine, and regardless of the circumstance, I intended to keep it that way."
I agree wholeheartedly, Danielle. The end of Drink Deep was amazing. I laughed and cried - sometimes at the same time.I love Jonah but not for Merit. Ethan is not only the best man for Merit, he's also #1 on my list of sexiest men in fiction. He's magnificent, partially because he's also flawed.
Mithrendiel wrote: "I agree wholeheartedly, Danielle. The end of Drink Deep was amazing. I laughed and cried - sometimes at the same time.I love Jonah but not for Merit. Ethan is not only the best man for Merit..."
Ethan is definitely #1 on my list too! When Ethan died in Hard Bitten, I was so devastated that I actually cried. Jonah is a good guy but to me Ethan is irreplaceable. I can't wait for Biting Cold!
******Spoilers*******I am definitely glad that Ethan is back & I am hoping that he remains that way. I think he had to die for Merit to finally realize what he means to her & for her to get past her distrust of him. So, I get it, but it didn't make it any less sad. I totally fell in love with him from the beginning & was sad at the end of Hard Bitten. I will say that I did feel a little cheated at the end of Drink Deep because I felt that there could have been a little bit more written about the Ethan/Merit reunion, if you know what I mean. Other than that, I loved the ending. What absolutely killed & almost had me crying in this book was when she went in his room & fell asleep crying in his bed with his scent surrounding her. That was sooo sad & I totally would have done the same thing if it were me in that situation. Anyway, I am excited about Biting Cold. I think Merit will get her BFF back in the end. I think Mal is being controlled or something, but I could be wrong... I just can't wrap my head around her going to the dark side.
I was shocked when Ethan died but disappointed when he return and now Jonah seems to be out....Ethan was out for me after what he did to merit. Now, maybe ethan and merit belong together but I would of like jonah to get a change..and maybe he will nothing sent in stone people can't wait for the next book.
Like everyone here when I read Hard Bitten I was so mad that she had killed off Ethan. Then I read Deep Drink, I kept thinking through the worth thing that something was up with Mallroy and I think that Simon is the one behind her problems.
I completely agree with Brandy about the scene when Merit went to Ethan's room. It was so emotional.
I loved when she saw him coming across the field and how they took care of Franklin back at the house.
I was left with a real anticipation for Biting Cold, only problem is that we have to wait until August for it to come out.
Ethan Is back!!! I think Ethan might become the new sire, because he cares... for humans regardless... who knows maybe he might become the new head of the GP. As for Morgan, I have this crazy feeling that he was the one who attacked Merit!!! And Ethan stopped the process, which is why Morgan is always jealous of Ethan, plus how come he has that mind connection with Merit? The ending of Drink Deep is Perfect!
