The Bookhouse Boys discussion
File Under: Misc.
We really did mention a lot of stuff in an hour...how did we do that? And how did I forget about umbrella hats?

They have a great collection of stuff there. I got "at the mountains of madness" there, which I see was a previous book of the month.
They say they have 29000 free ebooks

Merry Christmas all!
Whoa... awesome site, Lukeh! Makes me wish I had an e-reader....
Wait, Jen's got an e-reader. Hmm....

Merry Christmas to YOU, Lukeh. Thanks for that share. Between that link and feedbooks, I think I'm set for life.
Did you know our podcast was spotlighted in a real-life magazine? It was very flattering to have someone acknowledge the work we do:

Thanks to my co-hosts for all they do and the members of the group for making this such a great place.

I'm a pretty cynical guy sometimes, but I still love Christmas, 21st century warts and all.

Dave had Skype issues this week (which he has resolved, thank goodness), so Jason & I pressed on blabbing about TV & comics (does that sound right?).

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
Renee got me the Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse: Race to Death Valley & Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse: Trapped on Treasure Island in one beautiful slipcase. Glad I did end up getting her a gift! ;)

In the realm of books, Heather got me Celluloid and FARM 54. Awesome!
She's a Megan Kelso fan, and so I got her the one book she didn't have: Queen of the Black Black

Oregon's new unis will scare the sh*t out of 'em.

I'm an old-school dude (the throwback unis always get me excited). I've watched with dismay over the last decade as black has become a new and dominant color. I saw those Rose Bowl unis this morning and thought, "Wow, it looks like conceptual art from a Hawkman movie."
All that being said, I actually like how the wings on the jersey look like leather armor or something. The helmet graphic is bit much for me, though.
Bottom line: I don't care if they wear Wonder Woman outfits, as long as they win next week. :)
Oh, and...get off my lawn.

Just hadda take it that one step too far, didn't ya? :)
I can totally see the Hawkman thing, though.
Guys... just had an amazing and original idea!
Check it... fairy tales, reimagined for adults! And/or from different perspectives than the ones in which they were written!
I can't believe 8,000 people haven't already had this idea and published novels and made TV shows by the dozen exploring this extremely thin theme!
Don't front. All of your minds are blown. But I'll be sure to share my millions with my friends.

Just saw this "The The Kite Runner Graphic Novel reportedly had a printing of 150,000. (Expect lots of returns… the GN wasn’t that good, and makes the prose novel look cliched.)" and I almost fell off my chair. It took a graphic novel for people to realize that book was a corndog?! Ha!

New Mini-Episode: Êtes-vous lire le français?
We sure don't. Read French, I mean. Learn about all the other things Dave, Matt and Jason don't know, and a few things we can hazard a guess at, on this week's episode of the Bookhouse Boys in which we talk about our most read author, Habibi, Story of the Eye, Victor Hugo, Albert Camus, Infinite Kung Fu, Danger Country, The Tender Bar, memoirs, the Pinkertons, The Thirteenth Tale, Downton Abbey, Gothic romance and more!

*If I could be said to have a favorite French author (it's a stretch), it'd be Alexandre Dumas. But there is one soapy French novel I've read multiple times (in English): Les Liaisons Dangereuses by -- deep breath -- General Pierre Ambroise Francois Choderlos de Laclos. You've prolly seen the Malkovich/Close/Pfeiffer film. Great stuff.
*Infinite Kung Fu is one of the Christmas gift books on my Regina pile, as are Winshluss's Pinocchio (such a gorgeous book!!!) and Pyongyang. Just haven't gotten to 'em yet.
*I'm with Jason -- read most of Stephen King's work as it was coming out back in the '70's and 80's. Last one I read was Dolores Claiborne, which was published in 1993. Exception: I did buy his crime novel The Colorado Kid from Hard Case Crime for a buck a few years back; never did finish reading it though.
*I've also read everything by Hammett and Chandler that I could get my hands on. All Chuck Palahniuk except for his last two, Tell-All and Damned. Mortifyingly, I had also read all of Patricia Cornwell's books until nine years ago, when I finally copped to the fact that she was writing the same fucking story over and over... and it really wasn't that good. Slow learner, me.

Film directors from title words.
I missed two, and I can't say I feel bad about it:

New episode:

Dave and Matt get hopped up on bennies and cruise, uninterrupted by that other guy, through a host of topics including Mark Frost, guilty pleasures/genre fiction (celebrity memoirs; The Shadow in pulps, radio and comics; Dave's deep and abiding hatred for sweeping fantasy epics; Allan Quartermain novels and more), Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, Native Son by Richard Wright and its ability to separate Dave from his socks, the appalling lack of progress humanity has made over the last 500 years, "The Zoo Story" by Edward Albee, and more.

And I too loved the Helfer/Sienkiewicz/Baker series. When the topic of "What comic series would you resurrect" comes up, I always go with this one. I need Andy Helfer to write the final arc, so I can find out what becomes of the Shadow's robot body.
And if you haven't already, please, please watch A Man for All Seasons, Paul Scofield's tour de force portrayal of Sir Thomas More. Highest possible recommendation.
I love how stoked Dave gets about everything he's reading. Wish I had his enthusiasm and his speed-reading abilities.
Missed Jason; can't wait to hear you guys dig into Last Exit next week.
Thanks for your feedback, Jim. That Shadow cliffhanger still haunts me. I bought and bound the entire run of The Shadow Strikes!, but haven't cracked them yet. I'm going to follow Jason's recent advice and enjoy more of my to-read comics.
Jim wrote: "Missed Jason; can't wait to hear you guys dig into Last Exit next week."
I'm excited, too. I'm going to wear nitrile gloves and a painter's mask, just to be safe.

Jim wrote: "Shadow talk! I just got The Shadow Hitler's Astrologer last year -- written by Denny O'Neil, BTW, and yes, it was a "Marvel Graphic Novel." The book looks beautiful, but the story's not Shadowy enough."
That might be why I don't remember anything about it or anything about the character. Missed opportunity, Denny!

That one's been on my to-watch list for a looooong time. You're right, now would be the perfect time to get on it.
Jim wrote: "I love how stoked Dave gets about everything he's reading. Wish I had his enthusiasm and his speed-reading abilities."
Nah, I'm actually on the slowish-to-average side as a reader. I think I just have a lot more free time than most people because I never leave my house. :)
I do get pretty passionate about, well, everything really, but reading in particular. The number of dusty, moldy old volumes that have fundamentally changed the way in which I view the world is uncountable.

One and the same.

My mom says hi and thanks for the birthday wishes.
Oh, and she wanted me to tell you: she installed her printer by herself. She's very proud.

Earlier today, we reached our bandwidth limit.
In case you tried to download some of our podcasts and were denied, service has been restored and we have remedied the situation by paying for hosting. Special thanks to Jason for taking care of the immediate problem.
Also, thanks to all of you who listen. It's a flattering problem to have too many downloads of our show!

EDIT: Also the 200th anniversary -- not "birthday," right? -- of the birth of some guy named Dickens.
Our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY SPECTACULAR is now available.
I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we've passed the audition.
http://bookhouseboyspodcast.podomatic...
Join the Boys for a quick spin down memory lane (otherwise known as marveling that we've gotten this far) as we recount the highs and lows of our first year, our favorite books and those best forgotten, and talk about the year to come. Then we've got a bunch of recent reads to talk about, including more on Native Son from a smitten Dave, Camelot 3000, and more.

Kicking the new Heartless Bastards record, Arrow. "Only For You" is badass. All I need's a little reverb and my heart's a puddle.

I don't know if you being hopped up on cough syrup during recording counts as a "high point"....

Matt, I read Pay it Forward (in italics because I refuse to unwittingly direct readers to the book's Goodreads page). I despised that novel so much that I've never considered seeing the movie. I do envy folks who only saw the film since they only wasted two hours of their lives.
Jason, we'll miss ya. I believe we all aspire to going out on top -- congratulations on livin' the dream.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to bone up on Azerbaijani authors and novels containing marmots..... just in case it comes up.
(And did you know that Gay Talese and Gore Vidal are not the same man? No? Hey, me neither!
Apologies for that massive brain fart.)

Look, do you want altered-consciousness Jason or don't you? These mixed messages, man...
I did know that. But, you just gave me a potential name for a rad new super-villain named "Gaygore."

Matt, I read Pay it Forward (in italics because..."
Strangely enough, maybe the only book I've read since the podcast. Weird.
Are you actually endorsing the philosophy of Pay It Forward if you read it and then warn as many people as possible away from it?
