Hi, Splitter. As a generalization, I'd agree, but I think Marceau was brilliant. Unfortunately, he bred a whole generation of imitators who think that all you have to do to be comic/tragic is to paint your face white, wear a striped T-shirt and say nothing with exaggerated gestures.

Now that is creepy. Not many put as much into their act as Marcel did, which is why I named my dog after him.

I'm here to chat about whatever! :-)

Jenn (greeneyez2012) I'm used to headaches, I get them quite a bit.
While I wait for the meds to kick in, I watch Burlesque.
I'm not much for chick flicks or musicals but I love Christina Aguliera so I watched it, loved it and am watching it again.
I will never look at a box of Famous Amos cookies the same again.
But that's not my point.
I've read some books that drive me nuts, we all have I am sure.
But one story line in particular ALWAYS gets me going off.
I've come across it twice in the last 2 months and am praying it's not going to be a reoccurring thing.
The story line is this; main female lead in story is in trouble, looking for love or a guy or whatever.
She runs into said guy and before they even know each other, the guy either knocks her out or she falls asleep and he has his way with her or does things to her.
For some odd reason (unless drugged), said female never wakes up while he is doing these things.
Later on, she falls in love with the guy and finds out what he did to her.
But, hey! It's cool cause she's in love with him now.
W T H!?!?!?
Seriously, if that were me and I found out that a guy I loved/liked had his way with me while I was sleeping, it would be over , to put it mildly.
What are these authors thinking?
Also another thing that drives me crazy that authors write about is eyebrow wiggling/dancing whatever.
It's not sexy or cute, it's annoying and if some guy did to me in real life, I'd think he was a cheeseball.....what do you think, Cassie?

message 364: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (greeneyez2012) And since I am complaining, why doesn't GR have a IM feature?
It let's you know when people are on line.

message 365: by Cassie (new)

Cassie McCown (cassie629) | 713 comments The IM feature would be awesome!

I don't think I've happened upon that particular storyline, that I can remember. But, ya, that isn't very realistic! Not really something I'd want my daughter reading anyway! LOL

I agree about the cheeseball stuff too...haha...

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments I just got a one-word one-star review from someone who hadn't previously added the book to the shelf but had gone and liked my other one-star review! I wonder if the second person had read the book or was just doing it in solidarity with the first? How random!(The word in question was "Horrible")!

Mind, extreme reactions are good. The really damning one is "Meh..."

One word doth not a review make. Nor is it helpful for either writer or potential reader. It will be ignored.

message 374: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Well it did make me laugh to be honest. Also got a one-star on Amazon today - two in one day, would you believe it?, but she explained what she objected to, so that was fair enough.

I respect everyone's right to their own opinion and I certainly don't expect everyone to like ODS, but if they can't explain what they objected to, nowt I can do to address it. And the majority are liking it so I'm fairly sanguine.

Anyway after the length and detail of the first vituperative one I got, a one-worder just doesn't carry much in the way of weight....

C.S. Splitter | 979 comments MY guess would be that someone doesn't like YOU and is taking it out on your work. A one word review just makes no sense in any other context.

It's not right and I would hope that people would ignore it and take it as some sort of random attack (or targeted) attack.

The sad thing is, there is nothing you can really do about it. If you respond, you look bad. If it sits there and brings down your average, it hurts you.

Grrr....

message 377: by Amy Eye (new)

Amy Eye | 1841 comments Mod
JA - that really stinks! Well, the best thing that you can do is just ignore it. That 'review' (I'm using the term loosely) is just like gossip. You can either choose to ignore it - probably the best policy - or confront the source. You could always privately e-mail the reviewer and ask for details, stating that you would like to improve points where you can and maybe their insight would help. But personally, like all gossip, it may hurt you a bit here and there, but in the long run, a bit of bad gossip really won't matter. We all love you no matter what! :)

A hahahahaa.

Kidding. But wait you don't like when guys wiggle their eyebrows? what if its to be lude in a funny kind of way? Isn't it funny then?
And I have no idea why there isn't an IM feature, it would prob get overloaded by the mass of peeps on here.

message 380: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments JA- Some people have no class. I can think of one word that reviewer....but I can't type it here bc I have class.
Don't let people like that bother you, they are angry at the world and clearly she didn't read the book, she (or he) probably hasn't read anything. I must be right because otherwise their vocabulary would be better and they could at least form a sentence instead of one word.

You have plenty of other reviews that say you are good so don't let just one word ruin all your hard work.

We all love you! Which is more than that sill person can say.

Michelle This attic is hidden in the basement! I only just found it. Hello, everyone, and Happy Wednesday (it is now Wednesday, just, in this part of the world, anyway).

JA... just saw your post and went to check out the charming review. Not that there was much to check out when they only posted one word, of course. But... if you look at their other reviews (and you possibly already have!) you'll see that such eloquence is about par for the course with them. "It was good but not great" seems to be about as descriptive as the reviewer gets, and that's for a book they apparently DID like. Jeez, I thought *I* was bad at this reviewing stuff....! But anyway, I'm sure you are paying scant attention to the opinions of that fine "reviewer", but just in case.... IGNORE 'EM!

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Wotcha peeps! And indeed thanks for all the kind comments... It's funny, the first bad review I got made me feel all bruised and a bit sorry for myself (and I don't mean the ones with nice comments and low ratings, as I go by comments mostly); but this one just - didn't. It seems that I pay as much heed to an review as the reviewer paid to the book.

Also, I'm chilled about the fact that not everyone will like it. After all, there are people who hate the works of Robin Hobb, Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, Shakespeare.... and if THEY can't please all the people all the time, I'm happy to just entertain the odd one here and there! Not that I'm calling all you kind reviewers odd or anything...

Oooo have they posted some more reviews? I shall go and look.
Besides, I have nothing to complain about on the review front given how lovely most of them are - and yours, Michelle - thanks for that! Have linked from the blog and will Tweet as soon as I have access to Twittter.

Actually I think I need to check through the last week or so as there may have been ones I've missed off the blog while Mum was here. Back to full-time spamming now though!

I think it's just as well - people on Amazon are as much likely to rate a review "unhelpful" simply because they disagree with it as to rate one "unhelpful" because it really IS unhelpful. I've had several of my reviews with multiple "unhelpful" votes pretty much because I went against the common grain of feeling for a book - liking one most disliked or vice versa - and it pisses me off no end. don't people stop and think that they're messing with a person's reviewing status when they do that? I work hard on my reviews and to have them voted "unhelpful" just because someone doesn't like what I have to say is annoying.

*gets off soapbox*

What's weird about the person who posted that review is that I compared books to him? her? hir ... and found that our tastes were similar in most other cases. That's so weird ... *shrugs*

message 389: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments Whoa, guys, I love you all dearly, but please let's not have any aggro about this! It may be that the reader is just not someone who is very eloquent, disliked the book and and doesn't really have the instinct with words to explain how.

Remember, although in this group you guys are really good with reviews and really helpful in explaining, some reviewers don't want to guide other prospective readers and feel no need to educate the author; it's just a way of expressing their opinion, and they are entirely entitled to do that in whatever way they want.

I really appreciate your support, but I also *really* don't want to make anyone feel that they can't say what they feel - that's not what this place should be about. I know that that entirely not your intention, Katy and your comment isn't written that way, but there are people who are very easily made to feel intimidated. Hopefully this person won't be one of them...

JAC

message 390: by J.A. (new)

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments I prefer no "dislike" button. It's caused merry hell on the Amazon forums and a lot of nastiness and upset to people who have just said the wrong thing and wound someone up accidentally.

Readers can see perfectly well for themselves whose review is sensible and who is trolling. They don't need to be told who is useful or not.
Besides, if you misuse the like button the worst that happens is that someone thinks they're more popular than they are, and to accidentally over-positive someone seems much better to me than to neg them to depression!!

message 392: by Cambria (new)

Cambria (cambria409) | 3305 comments to like or dislike...that is the question.

I think that having a dislike button would be fun but probably not the greatest of ideas. The idea is to support others and to give constructive criticsm so a dislike button may harbor bad feelings of neglect and abuse. Too harsh? LOL. Im just being funny. But really, i don't think a dislike button is the way to go. I'm just sayin.

I totally understand; you are right, that wasn't my intention - I actually hoped that in the end it might help this person write their reviews - and I saw other reviews written by this person that did actually give some support for the position held. But I also hadn't realized that Mercury just went retrograde, which means the chance for miscommunication over the next month is rife and one needs to be very careful about what they say. I will say that I specifically wrote something along the lines that, although I loved the book, it was fine to have a different opinion, it would just be nice to know WHY they held that opinion. So, I really DID word it nicely. You're a very kind person - it's nice that you're concerned about the fallback on this.

J.A. Clement (jaclement) | 1328 comments I used to lurk mainly on the Amazon forums, but it all kicked off there; though there are sensible people like you lot on here, there is also a combination of those who who use the anonymity of the internet as a shield for real nastiness, and those who are very sensitive to anytthing that looks like criticism. It proved to be very volatile, and when you threw in a few mischief-makers it all got very nasty very fast.

That spoiled it all. Everywhere you went, aggro. I couldn't be bothered with that - life is too short! So I came across here.

One of the reasons I love GR is that it is supportive and lovely and full of friends; the ones you've met and the ones you haven't, yet. I would be really sad if that were to change, and mortified if I thought something I had said was the cause of it.

So actually I'm really very self-serving!
