That would make a great year long challenge.

message 104: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) What fun ideas!

message 105: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) My brain is fuzzy this morning, so maybe this has already been said, or even done, but I suggest:

Read a book that another member picks for you (from your tbr shelf).

message 106: by Kat (new)

Kat (katzombie) | 2478 comments Didn't we do that one last year? I think it was the first challenge I did at YLTO and it was so much fun. We should definitely do that one again !

Yes, we did it last year. I was thinking we could do a twist on it down the road. I need my thinking cap. Where did I put it?

message 109: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Fine then. I'll replace it with a fascinator then, and come up with something fascinating.

LOL!

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments I like it Janice, very good :-D

message 112: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments With it being election year, how about something to do with presidents? Bio or memoir of a president (I want to read White House Diary), a book with a fictional president as a main character, or a fiction or nonfiction book about the presidential election process (One of my favorite books is Taft 2012).

Siblings as main characters, and nonfiction about the relationship of siblings.

Retelling of fairy tales for adults/YA.

Legendary heroes, like King Arthur and Joan of Arc, Robin Hood.

Wartime experiences from the soldiers' point of view.

Wartime experience from civilians' point of view (family, civilians in a war zone, resistance fighters)

Fiction or nonfiction about specific wars (American Revolution, Civil War, Vietnam, Iraq, unfortunately there are way too many to choose from.

Dogs with jobs - soldier dogs, police dogs, search and rescue, therapy, assistance dogs, herding...

message 113: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Wow! Did you stay up late coming up with that list, jaxnsmom? All good suggestions.

message 114: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ooh... neat ideas...

message 115: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I kept jotting them down during the June Toppler, but misplaced the list (ok, really scraps of paper) til recently :) I think there are more somewhere else...

message 116: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Judy wrote: "Love the dog themes, jaxnsmom. We could even expand it to pets in general."

If we have to...my dogs aren't crazy about sharing :) And I have read some good books about other animals - currently reading Enslaved by Ducks by Bob Tarte , that poor man.

message 117: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilserv) | 490 comments I think that we should have a challenge or TBR toppler dedicated to books that we own. From some of the discussions, a few people have mentioned that they never get to these books although they want to read them.

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Good suggestion, Emily. Stay tuned.

message 119: by Maria (new)

Maria (aminowrimo) | 463 comments Oooh, yes. Books on my iPod already, or on the kindle... I'm looking forward to that toppler!

message 120: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Agreed. And it should have a rule that regardless of what Y'ALL do, *I* am not allowed to buy any more books until it's done.

message 121: by Alison (new)

Alison Forde | 269 comments I enjoyed the one where we paired up to pick books for our partner to read from their the list. could we revisit?

Yes, we will revisit but perhaps with a twist. :)

May I ask a question about the monthly challenge? What's the thing about putting them on a shelf?

I like the read a book about or based in a country idea. What about books with the month/season/time of year in their titles - not that I have one in mind, or anything >:-)

message 124: by Kendra Jo (last edited Mar 21, 2013 10:29AM) (new)

Kendra Jo (ojardnek) Don't know if this suggestion has been made previously ( at least that I could see ) but what about an animal themed read. Features an animal, transforms into animal, etc. could even include point qualifications if the cover features an animal print :). Just a thought...

message 125: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) That's a neat idea, tweakable for either challenges or themes... tx Kendra Jo!

message 126: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Great suggestions. They can be applied in many different ways.

message 127: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) For the toppler, we could adapt a challenge I love from another group-- it's called "give me five" and the way it works is one person posts five books, the next person picks one for the first person to read, and then posts his or her own five, and so on. We could do it with a twist- post five books, or seven, that you already own. The next person picks three for you to read for your toppler for the month, and posts his or her own five or seven, and so on. You don't get to post another list until you've finished your three. You finish earlier than a month, you get to post again that month. In fact, you could post as often as you get your three finished, and of course, that earns you the privilege of picking someone else's three from their list more often...

message 128: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments I could adapt that for a challenge. I've been thinking of something similar for an upcoming challenge. It could still be used for a Toppler.

message 129: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh I like it!

message 130: by Snoozie Suzie (new)

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 937 comments Oooh I just had an idea for February (short month). Read a book of short stories.

message 131: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments That's a good idea, Suzie. Thanks for the suggestion.

Is there any merit in a year long challenge where each author's surname begins with a different letter of the alphabet?

message 133: by April (new)

April | 970 comments Helen wrote: "Is there any merit in a year long challenge where each author's surname begins with a different letter of the alphabet?"

I like that idea, Helen. We could do author or title.

message 134: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Oooh - great idea, Helen. I will add it to my suggestion file.

message 135: by Jada (new)

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 30 comments I'm new here so I'm not sure what themes you have used and exactly how these challenges work (it's a bit confusing lol). But I would like to makes some suggestions anyway.
Around the World-Reading books that take place somewhere other than your native country
Psychology-books with psychological themes and meanings examples include: Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides , Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky , and Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer .
Books that changed things- any book that had a huge impact on society when it was first published. examples: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair , To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee , and A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen (technically that one is a short play, idk if you allow plays in this group).
Post-Apocalyptica World-this one is self-explanatory that there are so many books with this theme.

message 136: by April (new)

April | 970 comments Great suggestions! I have been wanting to read Middlesex for quite awhile now.

Jada Stuart (JadasArtVision) | 30 comments April wrote: "Great suggestions! I have been wanting to read Middlesex for quite awhile now."

I just finished reading it and loved it! Definitely not your average book. I've heard rumors that HBO might be making it into a TV show.

message 138: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments I purchased Middlesex a couple of years ago. I will get to it eventually, but the right themed challenge or group reads would make that happen sooner.

Thanks for your suggestions, Jada. Suggestions can be used in several ways around here - challenges, group reads, and topplers.

message 139: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Many of us have resisted reading current books that are over-hyped. How about a book that's gotten hardly any attention, but looks really good, a hidden gem?

I just couldn't resist that title. Haven't you ever picked up a book because the title sounded so fun or bizarre you just had to read it?

Judge a book by it's cover. Some covers are so appealing that you have to have them, whether it's beautiful, evokes a certain mood, funny, has a dog on it...

I use to judge books by the covers when I was in middle school and the beginning of high school. Now I judge based on quality alone.

message 141: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Our very first challenge on this group was to judge a book by its cover. :)

message 142: by Lara (new)

Lara | 1426 comments For the December challenge, I suggest including the option to finish those books started in 2012. I have a few lingering out there, and it seems like a good fit for a 24 hour challenge.

We're doing something different for Nov/Dec challenge. Maybe you would like to design it? Refer to this message: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Thanks Janice, I will!

Like Dry Ice and Dry Ice

Oh nice one! We had a challenge not so long back (was it the night challenge?) where there were several instances of the same title being used by different authors.
