Robie Matthews | 1 comments This is my first day in the group. I hope to find some good books to ready and be involved in some good discussions.

message 54: by John (new)

John | 1 comments Hi all. Took a long break from reading while kids were being born and life was speeding up. Hoping to find some good titles to get back in the habit. Starting with a mindless Patterson book (burn). Hope this mens book club will help with the ideas.

Amrina | 1 comments Hello all,

I am Amrina. I was suggested this group and the description said men centered group but anyone can join. I hope I am not in the wrong place.

Hello Amrina!

You are more than welcome here!!! While I did create this mainly for guys, I never intended (or wanted) it to be exclusively men. Anyone who wants to be part of the community can join!

WELCOME!

Joseph-Daniel Peter Paul Abondius (bookaholic203) thanks for adding me to the group I look forward to seeing what other men are reading

message 58: by Wyatt (new)

Wyatt | 1 comments Hello everyone!
My name is Wyatt and I am currently a student at Michigan State. I am just looking to get a feel for what others are currently reading and thought this would be a great way to do just that. I am currently catching up on some 'timeless classics' and recently read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as well as The Hobbit.

message 59: by Terry (new)

Terry Parker (parker19713) | 8 comments Hey all, long time "member", just catching up on what the interests are out there.

I am a big historical fiction fan, as long as it comes with with some mayhem. Erik Larsen books are favorites. But also the, I will use the Travis McGee term, "salvager" genre, like Jack Reacher, Matthew Scudder, Gabriel Allon, as they add a lot of details of the surroundings and scene, as well as action.

Anyway, just throwing some thoughts out there for folks. And like many of you all, over 40, two kids and dog, just living the dream.

Welcome, enjoy, and happy new year.

message 60: by Martin (new)

Martin (bookbloke) | 32 comments Hello all,

My names Martin, my favourite genres have to be horror and fantasy. I'd say I was late when it comes to enjoying books as much as they should be, but now I would say I'm addicted to reading and collecting books. I'd say I'm better at collecting because life gets in the way of reading meaning my TBR pile is more of a mountain. The wife thinks I have a hoarding problem.

It's great to meet you all and I'm looking forward to discussing books with you guys.

message 61: by Roderick (new)

Roderick Vincent | 16 comments Hi everyone,

I have an eclectic taste. I simply like a good story that is well written. Currently I've hit a hot streak with good books. The Circle was top three for 2014 which I finished in Dec. I'm currently on The High Window which is great so far with an awesome male protagonist.

message 62: by Skjam! (new)

Skjam! | 1 comments Hi!

I'm a book reviewer, and my blog is SKJAM! Reviews at http://www.skjam.com so stop on by. (My book reviews are also on Goodreads but I talk about other media as well.)

I have been an avid reader since I learned to read, and my tastes do tend to run to male-oriented literature--pulp, action, etc. I do not mind that women have had more success writing in these fields over the last few decades; they've written some excellent books that I enjoyed reading.

The most "manly" book I reviewed recently was actually a manga, "Vinland Saga", which has a bunch of Vikings slaughtering each other when not invading other countries.
Then the main character becomes a pacifist and even *more* manly.

Scott Marlowe (scottmarlowe) Hello, I'm Scott Marlowe and I read mostly fantasy and science fiction, but also some horror and historical fiction (Bernard Cornwell, anyone?).

I just read The Martian by Andy Weir. Pretty good read.

Although I'm from California (San Francisco area), I've lived in Texas for getting on 20 years now.

Looking forward to drinking some beers and talking books with you all!

Roderick Vincent | 16 comments Hey James,

I've been to Sterling (on the way back from a whiskey tour through the highlands...epic!). A nice town. I imagine it's a bit dark there nowadays. Let me know what you think of The Martian. If it's any good, I might add it to my to-read list.

message 74: by Nigel (new)

Nigel Cole | 4 comments Evening All. My name is Nigel Cole and I'm in the UK, and as well as being an avid reader, I'm also a writer. My first book, a comedy-fantasy called Last Exit Before Trolls Book 1: Swimming with Toasters, is out there in the world at the moment. I'm working on a sequel, another unrelated comedy novel, and a book of science-fiction short stories under a pseudonym. I also write pop-culture articles for www.needtoconsume.com. To be honest, that doesn't leave as much time as I would like for reading...

message 75: by Jeff (new)

Jeff (thelongwait) | 14 comments Welcome Nigel

message 76: by Mathew (new)

Mathew Carruthers | 3 comments A men's group - cool. I read a lot. Always have. I don't remember not being able to read. My reading interests are varied, though I stick with mysteries and thrillers, sci-fi and fantasy, and how-to books. I like to do more than just read, though. I make stuff, build stuff, grow stuff, brew stuff, ferment stuff.

message 77: by Lefty (new)

Lefty (iudiekarie) | 26 comments Okay, I'm coming back here again. Was here, was active, then life grew out of proportion. Back to reading and back to the group once more. Love seeing the new members!

Randall (golf11) | 1 comments Howdy all been around I guess for quite a while but finally figured I'd say hello. I'm an off-and-on kinda reader (partially because I do a lot of reading for other activities) but when I do read it's political biographies, political theory and books on the media and entertainment business (work). Not so real stuff I love to escape with a good political thriller so I'm currently on a Vince Flynn and reading American Assassin.

In NY now but lived in the Bethesda/DC area for quite some time. Other passions include golf, tennis, tech, gadgets and good food.

message 81: by Lee (last edited Jan 20, 2015 04:05PM) (new)

Lee DeBourg (leedebourg) Greetings to the group.
I hesitate to mention I am an author, for fear of being accused as a spam artist.
I have written two novels, with a male protagonist in each. For lack of better definition, they are Romance, from a decidedly Male POV. As you might imagine, presenting Male POV at the girl's club of Romance is one tough sell.
Lee DeBourg
At any rate, glad to join this group, and feel free to give my GR page a peek.

message 82: by Jeff (new)

Jeff (thelongwait) | 14 comments Welcome all! Since this IS a guys group, where can we post Super Bowl picks?

message 88: by Belart (new)

Belart Wright (belart_wright) | 2 comments Hey all! Belart is my pen name and I'm from Detroit. I'm glad this group exists. It's nice to find a group dedicated to men reading. After browsing a lot of these groups I found many to be the opposite of a sausage fest (whatever that is). I look forward to posting here. My books typically have a masculine feel with lots of action. There's always badass females in it but barely any relationship drama or anything like that.

Yeah that seems tough! Good luck to you!

message 90: by Adil (new)

Adil Najmuddin (anajmuddin) | 1 comments Hey everyone! I'm glad to found a place where I can share my passion for reading with other men. My goal this year is to read 50 books. I'm on #6 now. Hope you can join me on the ride!

message 91: by Martin (new)

Martin (bookbloke) | 32 comments Welcome to the group Adil, my goal is 50 as well, I'm on #5.

Bill K | 116 comments Mod
Perhaps I should elevate my goal to 50 books--I'm already reading #12 of my 36 book goal.

I do think that my reading pace will slow down when winter ends though...

message 93: by Liz (new)

Liz (Lizzyr) | 8 comments Heads up! Woman invading the men's book club! But let me explain myself... I coordinate book clubs both in a state prison and a county jail and both are all male groups. I need some suggestions for good books for men. (Yes, yes, books can be gender neutral, sure, but still...) We've read things like The Road, Matterhorn, East of Eden, The Great Gatsby, The Old Man and the Sea, and so on. But I could use some advice about what might fly and what might not. And maybe I will learn that I'm being too rigid in my sense of what men will read. I checked out your bookshelf and already I've gotten some good ideas. Thanks for the opportunity!

message 94: by Bill, Admin (new)

Bill K | 116 comments Mod
Welcome!

No worries, Liz. The Men's Book Club is open to everyone. It sounds like you are here for the same reasons as the rest of us--typical book clubs tend to be slanted toward female readers and the book selections often aren't as appealing to males. I've found quite a few good books here over the past couple of months.

message 95: by Liz (new)

Liz (Lizzyr) | 8 comments Thanks Bill! I appreciate the welcome. And yes, exactly, hoping to find good book suggestions. I have to give my guys a lot of credit because they are very open to reading all kinds of books, but I do want to move out of my comfort zone a bit.

message 96: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Coley (josephacoley) | 1 comments Hello all! My name is Joseph Coley, author and avid reader. I go through about a book a week reading, and a book every 3-6 months writing. I have written the Six Feet From Hell, Dead Legends, and the soon-to-be-released Traveler series books. I read sci-fi, post apocalyptic, horror, and basically anything else that interests me.

message 97: by David (new)

David Batterson (davidbatterson) | 1 comments What a great idea. I'm an author myself and although I'm not new to Goodreads, I still don't understand how Goodreads works. But thank you for the invite. It will be nice to see what everyone is up to! Dave

Martin (bookbloke) | 32 comments Welcome to the group guys.

message 99: by Eric (new)

Eric Dunn (justanotherbookguy) | 1 comments Glad to be a part of this group. It's refreshing to be in a book club that is geared toward men. Illinois, 32 year old, married 2 kids. Excited to hear some good suggestions and have some great conversation about books.

message 100: by Edward (new)

Edward (ladd101) | 31 comments I just joined a few days ago to get some recommendations on books that might be a good read. I read City of Thieves because guys seemed to like it. Well, all I can say is that I'm extremely pleased with that recommendation. What a great book? I think it really is sort of a "guy" book. Look forward to reading more books recommended by the group.
