Bag of Bones Miniseries
EW's review of BoB was rather positive. If I can find it on their website, I'll post it.
You know, it's hardly the first adaptation of King that has been deplored. I haven't seen it yet, but I absolutely refuse to let my own opinion be swayed by critics!
Me, too. I DVR'd the series and will be watching it this coming weekend no matter what people are saying about it.
I felt like the opening act was stretched out (a whole hour of Noonan basically alone), but once he went out and started meeting the rest of the characters, it picked up. It's been at least 5 years since I've read BoB, though.
I may have to reread this book. I remember it getting me out of a slump a couple years ago. It's a beautiful, haunting story. In that way, i'm not sure any movie could really do it justice.

btw, i did enjoy the first part of the movie last night, even though i missed the first 10 minutes or so..
Random comment: probably because it takes a while for a book to be made into a movie, but lately King characters movie counterparts seem much more tech savvy and clever then they are in the books :)
I was somewhat disappointed in the mini-series. It seemed incongruent to have Mike Noonan speaking with a British accent when he grew up in the area and his brother Sid didn't have an accent.
There were a couple of scenes that were shortened so that their significance was obscure.
The only thing I overall was totally disappointed in was Pierce Brosnan. His performance seemed hokey when Noonan was emoting anything but the "smug writer" attitude at the beginning. I remember the character being more likeable.
I liked the ending in the book better.
I did too. This one was a bit too happy and unrealistic for me.
Overall, I liked the miniseries. It wasn't GREAT or anything, but I did like it. I thought Pierce did a good job, especially when his wife got killed. It came on again last night at 11:00, I had the volume low because I was reading and when I looked up the look of grief on his face as he was holding 'his wife', it just killed me.
I didn't even notice his accent, LOL!
I can't wait to watch it this weekend! Makes the week go slower, though. lol

I recently re-read this book, so I was fairly familiar with it. I was unbelievably disappointed at the miniseries --- then I noticed that for once, Stephen King did NOT do the teleplay. Explanation granted.
I thought the miniseries was good, but I have not read the book yet...I can't wait to read the book.

I agree with Trish. I thought BoB really picked up in the conclusion, and I fell in love with it. At first, I didn't think Pierce would make a good Noonan, but I think he did a fine job. And I agree with Rachel. I liked how they made it modern with all the gadgets, like the iPad. The movie was creepy.
I saw the mini series and was not happy with the movie.The rawness of the movie was not there. To me it was very commercial and corny. The story line was ok. But there wasn't any substance to the movie.
Finally watched this on my dvr. It's been a long time since I've read the book but it seemed like they made a lot of changes and in the end it felt cheesy. Some parts were creepy but it just didn't compare. Maddy was annoying and their whole relationship felt forced. Brosnan was ok but I agree that it was weird to have him speaking with a brogue when his brother had none. I thought it started off strong but ended weak.
I don't feel BoB was commercial at all. There were some horrific things happening at that lake, and the movie didn't hold back. I know King's peak was '73-'83 (at least in my opinion), but he can still write some brutal shit when he wants to, and the movie captured it pretty well. It gave me the creeps.
I guess I am comparing it to his movies such as The Green Mile, Misery, and Shawshank Redemption. Any time I see his movies on TV as a mini series, I am very disappointed. I did not find Bag of Bones scary at all. I agree with Joanie. It started off strong and then fizzled to borderline cheesy. I was happy with the series.
The scene where he met Kyra and Mattie was horrid. Kyra isn't even a toddler and ugh. I have only seen the first part so far but zzzzzzz!
I completely agree with you Zombette - Kyra HAS to be a toddler - and one of the reasons I remember that scene so well is the conversation they (Kyra and the narrator) have together: She tells him that she's going to the beach because she has her "suitie" on. He replies, he can't go with her because he forgot his "suitie" That one little piece of conversation absolutely charmed me to the core. It's so very, very Stephen King (who is one author that NEVER condescends when talking to or about children. The movie missed that completely!
I loved the majority of the things Kyra said in the book. She sounded like a sweet, smart, charming little guy. Ha ha
And the mini series totally missed that aspect, didn't it?
How in the name of all that is holy did I miss a mini series by Stephen King :( This is very irritating. I've come to expect to be let down by adaptations of Stephen Kings works, he changes things or allows them to be changed so the need to buy the book if you haven't is still there. Besides no one can top what your own imagination has done while reading unfortunately they can't just look inside our heads and see what we've been imagining for his books so it's always going to be a let down of some sort.
I just saw this on netflix. Not so good. They tweaked the story and Mattie came across looking a little like a gold-digger who throws herself at Mike. In this movie, there is no spark between them and he doesn't do much to deserve her affections: He picks up Kyra out of the road and then goes and gets his dander up at the deposition. But that's all. No lawyer. No PI. Also the story takes place very quick after Jo's death. Weeks maybe, so his attraction to her is also odd.
I agree it wasn't good at all. Granted I haven't read BOB in over five years and forgot many of the details, but this was seriously lame. The first half wasn't bad, but it just became increasingly silly as it went along. The effects were terrible and Pierce Brosnon was over the top. By the time the tree started bitch slapping him around I was just laughing at the how ridiculous the movie had become. Major disappointment. I'm tired of Mick Garris' vision of how SK's stories should look.Bring on Affleck and The Stand!
I watched part 1 and never bothered to watch part 2, so I guess it wasn't that great.As someone else mentioned, I couldn't get past the fact that he had an accent and his brother didn't. Pierce Brosnan was just all kinds of wrong for that part.
I saw the mini series. What it the worst adaptation? No. Was it the best? No. P. Bronsnan would not be my first choice in the role, but I liked his portrayal. He gave the character depth. The first part was creepy. The second part was laughable (tree slapping). :(
well I a have'nt read the book yet but I did like the mini series. I was wondering how this tied into the dark tower series and was it represented on film?
I watched this recently on Netflix and it was alright. Not awesome but not bad. Granted, it's been years since I read the book so maybe if I'd've re-read it first my opinion would've been different. But it worked. The tree-slapping was a lil silly, but I liked how (view spoiler).
Yes, I recommend seeing Bag O Bones to SK fans. I like seeing his work pop onto the screen. As you know, it's very hard to put SK's words to film. This is not the best, but not the worst. I also luv the references to other books via character dialogue. Maybe someone can list those. Maybe someone already has. :)

I saw this on television. The only reason that there are ghosts, is because a woman was raped in front of her child and she was murdered. The men murdered the woman and child. This adaptation is disgusting.
Just watched this for the first time, and it was 3 hours of my life I'll never get back. Horrible casting. Horrible effects. Really bad screenwriting.
Totally agree! 3 hours of life lost in vain.Mini series may feel good if you have never read BoB, of read it long before the series so you've forgotten all the details for which I love King so much.
Mike Noonan somewhere in the beginning of the book cites some writer (forgot whom & I don't have a book near so excuse me) saying something like ... "bad character is a bag of bones".
For me Pierce Brosnan made King's Mike Noonan that "bag of bones".
Overall I liked it, but I was quite disappointed that they aged Kyra. As soon as I saw her I knew they couldn't get away with putting my favorite book line in the movie. "Don't taggle your own quartermack!"
I'm about an hour into this and it's really dragging. Is it worth sticking with or should I watch something else?

It was pretty crappy, but then, I knew that it would be because Bag of Bones is a very introspective novel. Sometimes you just need to leave novels alone.Who's with me?
It was watchable. Most King adaptations are not as good. Sometimes it's understandable to change the material for TV. It was ok.

I remember reading the book then watching the miniseries soon after and my memories are quite adoring. I recall being captivated by the stunning supernatural elements during the movie. Pierce Brosnan is a very convincing Mike Noonan and did a wonderful job translating the character from the book to the screen. Overall; a solid show. I do have a question for Stephen King fans. Was Noonan’s wife the same that died in Insomnia?
