I think he was destined to be leader of ThunderClan because StarClan sent him dreams (when Fire-Whatever you are up to was a kitty pet) Telling him about the wild
Rusty left his home because he wanted to see the life of a Clan cat. He never regrets going into the wild.
Rusty (Firepaw/heart/star) has had dreams from Starclan all his life. He had a dream about catching a mouse in the wild. Starclan led him to the forest because of Goosefeather (from Bluestar's Prophecy) and Spottedleaf (from Into the Wild) had prophecies that fire would burn through the forest and save the clan. Then Bluestar, Graystripe, and Lionheart found him.
He wanted adventure. We all do sometimes in pur pampered lives. He wanted to be proud of himself, instead of sitting around eating cat food. Plus, destiny is destiny after all.
