You seem to have forgotten Horace Walpole! The Castle of Otranto is generally considered to be the first gothic novel. Back in 1764 :)

I saw a television show of The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood when I was a kid. Unfortunately it was right before I went canoeing in the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota and Canada. Kept me up for a few nights.

I would like to suggest L T C Rolt. his single collection "Sleep No More" is a good example of 1940s Jamesian horror.
