The inspiration behind Route 66 Backroads was a faded, dog eared photo post card from about 1950. The post card was of a billboard somewhere in eastern Arizona that proudly proclaimed a wide array of attractions awaiting discovery on the journey west. On both sides of the billboard is another list but this time of attractions found only with short detours north or south of Route 66. I have a front row seat to the resurgence of interest in Route 66 as my office faces it. One evening as I meditated on this renewed fascination with the iconic highway, that old photo came to mind. The short version of this long story is I sat down at the desk with my trusty atlas and began listing the multitude of attractions found within a few miles of Route 66. Once the outline was complete it was apparent that I had a Route 66 guide that portrayed the old highway as a portal to a myriad of natural wonders, historic sites, and time capsule Americana. My hope is that the book, a Route 66 guide with a twist, will enhance the adventure of discovery that is a drive along the "Main Street of America".
I look forward to promoting the book and spreading the word that rediscovering the real America and the great American road trip is as easy as taking to the road less traveled.
