message 101: by Clare K. R. (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) I would contact the publisher first, the author second. What I'm guessing happened in this case, with some of the books available and some not, is that a different person currently has the rights for book 3 than for the others. I imagine the author has the rights back for all the others and has gotten them on Kindle, but the publisher still has the rights for book 3 and isn't bothering to get older books on Kindle.

message 102: by Helen (new)

Helen I started part 1 as a group read, the author was actually involved in the discussion but is suffering internet problems(?) so hoping she'll come back and I can ask her. Failing that, I shall contact the publisher - thanks everyone.

message 103: by Helen (new)

Helen Well, the author is unable to help. The publisher has the rights so I really am stumped as to why they've put 1,2,4 & 5 on kindle!

Is there any way I can get it from Amazon US, it's on there!

Literary Chanteuse I have a problem I'm wondering if anyone knows how to solve. I have a book which was sent by an author for kindle however it is not a gift via Amazon but for some reason I can not get it download to my kindle only my kindle on P.C. I do have Calibre also. I'm just not computer savvy to figure this out. I also haven't had my kindle for very long. Should I delete my kindle on PC and if I do will I lose the books I have there? Thanks!

Helen Don't know if this will halp but this is what I do:
Open Calibre, click import books, select from where ever you have the book in question saved (mine are in my documents), it should appear in the Calibre programme. Attach kindle, then highlight book and click send to device.

My question is, can I change my 'address' to the US to buy a book and swap it back? Would I need an actual address? relating to Amazon

Helen, I don't think that will work, it's not about what address you state but where are you actually in the world! Amazon transfers books via whispernet which involves the mobile telephone network.
I'm in Greece and when I traveled to Barcelona Spain I couldn't get the book I had pre-ordered but when I changed my address using the hotel in Barcelona I all worked fine.

message 108: by Helen (new)

Helen Yes, I think I've pretty much realised I'm stuck. Part 3 of a set of 5 isn't available but I've ordered it in paperback. Hopefully, Mira Grant's novella will turn up too!

message 110: by Lisa (new)

Lisa When you're on a plane with your kindle, reading, and the announcement of "turning off all electronic devices" is played, that means ereaders too, huh? Even if my Wifi is turned off?

message 111: by Ioana (new)

Ioana Lisa,
Yes, that means e-readers, too :(
SOmetimes they give examples of devices, and include ereaders in the list, and they mention "anything operated by battery".
But it is only for a few minutes, so not such a big deal (I think).

message 112: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Bummer....guess I'll read the freebie mag for those few minutes LOL.

message 113: by Gill (new)

Gill (lockwdg) | 49 comments Only during take off and landing. No different from any other electronic device eg ipods, game consoles. They actually mentioned kindle by name on my recent flight.

message 114: by Helen (new)

Helen Margaret, glad I could help.

On my flight in August, everything but books was mentioned. Interestingly, I saw a couple at the pool and one at the beach.

message 115: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pg4003) | 243 comments Marie, some people were having trouble with screen freezes when their Kindle was installed in the Amazon (non-lighted) Kindle case, the one with the prongs that fit into the Kindle itself. In those instances Amazon replaced their cover with the lighted cover, which was not causing those problems.

If I were you, I would keep track of this problem, if it's happening frequently, call Kindle CS 1-866-321-8851 and they'll probably replace it. If you are concerned about it, be sure to do it before your 1 year anniversary and the warranty expires.

message 116: by John (new)

John (johnrinmi) | 8 comments I am fairly new to Kindle and hate how my library is set up on Amazon.com Its not very easy scrolling through and viewing my library. Is there anything that can be done to make it more "user friendly" I know how to view by author or title etc but you can view only 15 books per page,so when you go to page 2 you forget what books are on page 1. I have a Sony E Reader and love how I can view my library with so much more ease

message 117: by Betsy (new)

Betsy You can organize your books on your Kindle by using Collections, but I don't think you can organize your library on Amazon. It would be nice if they would allow that.

Thanks. I have set up some collections just was wondering about my library on Amazon.

message 119: by Kim (new)

Kim D’Arcy I received my Kindle 2 almost two years ago and I am completely obsessed with it, (after my children, husband and dog it's probably the next thing I would save in a house fire).

I would like to purchase another one for the home for my two children to read on. I have reluctant readers who like to read on the Kindle so they don't get discourage by how much of the book they still have left to read. I was looking into the new Kindle products and I'm looking for any recommendations. Right now I think I am deciding between the Kindle touch and the Kindle keyboard, (both $99). I need the text-to-speech option. Any suggestions?

message 120: by Mary (new)

Mary | 4 comments I'm relatively new to kindle but my books are building up nicely. I want to make some collections so I can clear the home page but have a problem. I can put the book into the collection but it doesn't move from the home page - kind of defeats the object. Help please...?

message 121: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pg4003) | 243 comments Mary, on your Home page, move your cursor all the way to the top, yours probably says By Title, you need to change that to By Collections. That's your "sort by" command, if you tell it By Collection then only your Collection titles will show up (with the books inside of course).

Hi Patricia. Just followed your instructions and all is sorted. Brilliant. Thanks.

Helen Hi Patricia, Mary is a friend of mine and I said to her 'Patricia will know!' Def the go to girl on techie stuff.

message 124: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Just downloaded a mobi to my computer. What do I do to get it on my Kindle? Thx!

message 125: by stormhawk (new)

stormhawk | 542 comments Find the target directory where your Kindle for PC Files are stored. Mine is called "My Kindle Content" and is in the Documents Folder.

Stick your file in there, and then open Kindle for PC. The book should show up in your directory.

message 126: by Helen (new)

Helen I transfer via Calibre.

I have to plead ignorance.

Betsy Patricia wrote: "Just downloaded a mobi to my computer. What do I do to get it on my Kindle? Thx!"

What kind of Kindle do you have? Is it a separate device, i.e. Kindle 1 or 3? or is it just the Kindle app on your PC? If the latter, Stormhawk's instructions are probably sufficient.

If you have a separate device, you have to first connect it to your computer. There should be a USB connection/cord that came with which will plug into your computer (in Kindle 3, the cord is plugged into your adapter; just remove the plug head to get to the USB plug).

Then on your computer, the Kindle should show up as a new device, with directories of files, just like a thumb drive. You should then be able to move the mobi file you downloaded from wherever you saved it to the appropriate directory on your Kindle.

You may also be able to just e-mail the file to your Kindle. I haven't done this myself, but I believe there are instructions on Amazon or maybe in your Kindle manual.

Calibre is a separate program which you would have to install on your computer. It maintains a duplicate database of your Kindle library. Some people swear by it, but I think it just complicates things. The best thing about it, to my mind, is that it will convert books you can't get in mobi format into a format that the Kindle can read.

Good luck!

message 130: by Helen (new)

Helen to email to your kindle: open your email account and select new. In the subject bar type "convert". The address is your name @free.kindle.com

message 131: by Gill (new)

Gill (lockwdg) | 49 comments Yes you do, but you can use them once in the air

message 132: by Anika (new)

Anika (teddybear1) | 84 comments I've had my Kindle for a year now and I can only get books for my region which is Latin America and the Caribbean. My questions is besides from ITunes where else can you get ebooks (that are up-to-date) that sell international that I can sync/move to my kindle???? The other day a friend gave me a website where I was able to get a pdf free of an up-date book then i saved it as a text and move it from my computer folder to my Kindle folder and it was not bad I could read it. Anyone suggestion??

message 133: by stormhawk (last edited Oct 26, 2011 06:00PM) (new)

stormhawk | 542 comments A lot of your limitations relate to the licensing deals, which are country-specific. Can you use smashwords.com or the Baen Free Library at baen.com?

message 134: by Matt (new)

Matt Posner (mattposner) You can go to gutenberg.org for books that are out of copyright. For indie books, definitely smashwords.com if possible.

I second Gill: On the airplane, they have asked me multiple times to turn off my Kindle, yes.

message 135: by Nate (new)

Nate | 41 comments WiFi Issue: My network connection is showing, and I have now typed in my password probably about 15 times and still can't connect, I even tried to manually reset the network. I've never had this issue b4. Any suggestions on how to get my Kindle back on line?

message 136: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pg4003) | 243 comments Nate, did you try a hard reset on your Kindle? Hold the power button for about 30 seconds (count it down) and let it restart. Don't know, but that seems to resolve a lot of issues with the Kindle. If you've already reset your network, I don't know what else to try. When you say you reset your network, does that mean you powered off your router and restarted it?

i know this might not seem to make sense, but on my kindle i MUST use capital letters - even tho my wi-fi doesn't require it - to get my Kindle hooked up.

message 138: by Nate (new)

Nate | 41 comments Thanks guys.

Turns out the neighbors were having their wifi hooked up, I think that, that somehow interfered with ours. Once they were done all I had to do was put in my password and I was good to go.

message 139: by Helen (new)

Helen That could be a real nuisance. Doesn't a hard reset take your books off, requiring re-downloading. If so, I'd be pretty peeved!

message 140: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pg4003) | 243 comments No Helen, you're thinking of "Reset to Factory Defaults". The hard reset just shuts it down and restarts it.

message 141: by Helen (new)

Helen Oh, in that case I wouldn't be half as upset, lol.
