"There is a great list of books in TNBBC (The Next Best Book Club) that has resulted in the creme of the crop'. It is built by members adding 1 - AND ONLY ONE item to the list. Basically take the list repost it and add one.

So many people name Dune, but I've never managed to get past the first couple of pages. It would go on my list of 'Books not to bother with'.

Dune is a fantastic read! It is one of those books where readers jealously regard the person that has not read it yet. Kind of like LotR. I guess all the names emerge from the complex world building Herbert is putting forward, but it is well worth the effort.

This is terrible, but Dune is one of my make or break books. I have trouble taking other reviews seriously if they didn't like Dune. I quite understand its not for everyone, but it really really was for me.

The Pern series by Anne McCaffrey (because it really is a great study in cultural drift)
The Island of Dr. Moreau & War of the Worlds HG Wells
Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen H Beam Piper ( I think its good to see how the genre radically changed over time)
