We've gotten so big, and we have people of varied Goodreads experiences. Maybe it's time we shared how we use Goodreads and found things that work for us.

And, of course, I tried something new today that I wanted to share. ;-)I placed an Amazon order today from my bloated Wish-List shelf. I wanted to order enough to get free shipping, and I was ordering used books. I created a non-exclusive shelf called "Order May 26" and put the books on them as I ordered. Now when they come in, it will be easy to identify them and move them to my To Read shelf.
Interesting Elizabeth. Good idea. I don't actually use the To Read shelf or wish list. I just put them directly on my Amazon list, which isn't small. But neither is it outrageous. Something has to really catch my eye. I should have stock in Amazon. I also note you order used, which I also do frequently. Just interesting, since we are both relatively new Kindle owners. And I love my Kindle and use it much more than I thought. There are some gems I want as digital keepers. Others I am all about the cheapest option. Sometimes used on Amazon and half Price books are better in my book (pun intended...) There are so many awesome features on the site.
Actually, I could have purchased the books anywhere. I just added another Goodreads shelf for the order. How do others customize their GR shelves?
I have a kindle and was downloading so many of the free books that I was losing track of what they were. So I created an exclusive shelf here on Goodreads called "in queue" where I now list every book I put on my kindle that I haven't read. It is my exclusive kindle "to be read" list. I now have 134 books on it, but when I am ready to read something new on my kindle, this shelf makes it easy to look through what I have loaded, quickly check ratings and reviews, etc.
If I created a shelf for things I own that are TBR I think I would be depressed at how much is there...
I have a "Kindle" shelf. If I want to choose a book from my to-read list that is a Kindle book, then I click "select multiple" from the list (under the list of shelves in the my books page) and select "to-read" and "kindle", then it will show me only those books which appear on both of those shelves simultaneously. That way, I can easily find a book from my TBR pile that is also on my Kindle. You could also use this to select "to-read" and "own", that way you wouldn't have to make a separate, additional shelf just for books that you own but haven't read.
I was explaining multiple shelf selection to a friend recently, and it really helped her out so maybe it will help some of you also. :)
Jenny, I've done that, too, but I don't have my physical books marked as "own." Does that make them available through swap?By the way, I saw someone has a Kindle-available-to-lend shelf. I think as I get lendable Kindle books, I'll add them to that shelf. I'd be happy to loan any book I've read.
Elizabeth, it doesn't automatically make books you "own" available for swap, you have to check a box to do that. I like selecting multiple shelves, too, I'm glad they started that feature.
I don't have separate shelf for books I own, though, it's the default To Read shelf. The separate shelves are for my various Wish Lists.
I have a TBR Shelf and a TBR that I own and a TBR my Library has.
When I add books to my list I now check online with my library to see if they have them. It makes going to the library easier because I know if they have the books I'm most interested. It also makes trips to Half Price books and other book stores easier because I know what I have and the library has and what I would need to buy to read.
Great thread Elizabeth!

I've seen your Library shelf, Tera, and I was thinking I probably should add one for myself. In fact, I saw a couple of books this morning that I probably wouldn't buy for myself that my library has - maybe I'll just go do that right now!
I also wanted to add that I love the compare feature. I use it all the time with friends to see how closely our opinions are. Then I can sorta kinda gage if they really love a book if I might because we have other similiar tastes.
I recently found out that there is a list here on Goodreads that shows u "award winning" book lists.. I found this very helpful! It is such a tiny little link on the explore page that I didn't notice it earlier!
This is my discovery of the day :D

In the Forsyte thread, Georgiana and Irene reminded me that there is a hide spoiler feature we should all know about:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...
Maybe some of the members new to Goodreads don't know about using the add book/author link just above the comment box. Opening this means you can create a link in your post about the book. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass
This makes it really easy for those of us who might not have heard of your book to learn more about it.
