The reply button will automatically quote the first few lines of the post to which you are replying (not always useful if it is an ongoing thread).

To insert links click "add book/author" above the reply box.

If you are using the goodreads app, you cannot.

Paul Lannuier (ww2pt) | 27 comments MadProfessah wrote: "@paul what did you like about THE LONG EARTH?"

I liked that The Long Earth was a nice easy read that didn’t pretend to be a super-hard sci-fi epic. I read enough of that normally, and I was looking to enjoy a book without having to work at understanding it for a change. I liked the story, I liked the characters, I liked the universe that Pratchett and Baxter created, I liked the writing and the flow of the novel, I liked that they didn’t take themselves and the story so seriously that they filled it with KSR-esque techno-mumbo-jumbo...

Other than that, it was awful. 🤣

Not quite, almost finished!

Paul Lannuier (ww2pt) | 27 comments Just finished Saturn Run (John Sandford and Ctein) and it was EXCELLENT! It exceeded my expectations so much that I’m ashamed to admit that I passed this book up several times at the library because I thought, “John Sandford??? He’s not a ‘real’ sci-fi author; he writes those books they sell at grocery stores and airports!” Well, I’m glad I finally gave this a chance. It’s one of the most enjoyable novels I’ve read all year, a really great story with very believable hard science. If I didn’t know the authors I might have guessed Greg Bear, or maybe Niven & Pournelle back in their heyday. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly recommended!

Next up for me is Luna: Wolf Moon by Ian MacDonald, which I hope to start tonight. I loved the first book in the series (Luna: New Moon).

Allan Phillips Finished The Martian Chronicles over the weekend. I really enjoyed it; even though some of the vignettes were absurd, they carried you along and got to the poignant ending. Reminds me of Childhood's End in the feeling of loss you have at the end. Started in on The Windup Girl, which I'm really enjoying so far. On audio in the car, after finishing Slan, I am taking on the newest translation of Solaris.

Allan Phillips I was in Dallas on Friday, and before making the 5 hour drive home to San Antonio, I stopped at the flagship Half Price Books store in the suburb of Richardson. Wow! It's huge, the size of a Super Target, and had 4 times the paperback sci-fi section of any of my local stores. I easily killed an hour there, and it could have been the whole morning. I continue to hunt for sci-fi classics and found several I've had trouble locating elsewhere: Stand On Zanzibar, The Sheep Look Up, A Case of Conscience, Rogue Moon, Rite of Passage, all $0.98 or less, plus The Windup Girl. Big score, highly recommended for anyone who happens to live or travel there.

Wolf Moon is great! And last week Ian McDonald mentioned he also finished writing Moon Rising

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 76 comments I’m ambivalent about LUNA... I read an excerpt and it seems cool but I’ve never actually read an entire book by this author.

He seems to have great premises but I’m not sure about the execution.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I loved Macleod's book The Dervish House

message 1918: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips Wife & daughter out of town, giving me a quiet weekend. So I picked up Berserker by Fred Saberhagen and knocked it out in 24 hours!

message 1919: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips In the last three days, I've finished The Windup Girl, which was fantastic, Solaris (audio), and Brave New World, the classic I had never read. I'm thinking of knocking out Rogue Moon by Alfiant Budrys, which is very short, then maybe The Divine Invasion (PKD), the 2nd book in the series read.

message 1920: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been reading The Long Way Home by Sabrina Chase. Despite a slow start, it's quite growing on me.

Gary Gillen | 14 comments I finished reading The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time Book #1) by Robert Jordan. I am reading A Killer's Mind by Mike Omer. I plan to read Across the River and into the Trees by Ernest Hemingway next.

Paul Lannuier (ww2pt) | 27 comments I finished Wolf Moon by Ian McDonald (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) and The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️) .

Now reading Blindsight by Peter Watts and Burning Paradise by Robert Charles Wilson.

I’m completely hooked into the Luna story. The first book stated a bit slow but by the end I hadn’t to start the second book a.s.a.p. just to see where the story went. And now I have to wait nine long months for the third (and final?) book! 😫

Great stuff, imho, but then I’ve been into these sorts of epic family-dynasty dramas ever since I first read Dune and The Godfather as a kid.

message 1924: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 76 comments I probably will get around to them eventually, but most likely after the third one comes out.

I am finally starting ONLY HUMAN the third book in the THEMIS files by Sylvain Neuvel, after being totally charmed by the first two books ( WAKING GODS and SLEEPING GIANTS).

Meanwhile, I am starting a classic: We

Tim Tofton (tim_t) Reading ‘Blood and Bone’, by Ian Cameron Esslemont, been slowly working though this 6 book series, this is No5. Very good series, easier going than the Malazan Book of the Fallen and you get some background info on some of the characters in there, win-win!

Anthony (froissant) | 29 comments Started Six Wakes (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...) in the morning, couldn't put it down until tonight.
The dénouement isn't mind blowing, but the narrative is really enticing and I liked how all the characters' background were woven into the story.

How was Song of Kali? I just started Hyperion. I haven't read a lot of Dan Simmons- in junior high, I read Children of the Night, which I thought was awesome.

Great show! I loved the atmosphere and the noir theme of the overall storyline.

message 1932: by Scott (new)

Scott I started Virgin Planet by Poul Anderson but I don't think I am in the mood for it...it's pretty silly (yeah I should have been able to tell from the cover.) Think I am going to put it down, maybe permanently.

message 1933: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips Song of Kali was really good, very creepy, better than Children of the Night but not as good as Carrion Comfort. I liken these to early Stephen King novels - different people like different things but no matter which you choose, you can't put it down. I love Simmons as a writer; he is so versatile, and I'll read any book he puts out. Of course, the Hyperion Cantos is daunting, but well worth it, and I have several others on my shelf to read.

Finally returned to Blackfish City and finished earlier this week. One of the better dystopian works I've read for sometime.

message 1939: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips In the last week or so, I've finished Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys, A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs & Invasion of the Body Snatchers by Jack Finney. All are older, short, quick reads, but those are the ones I'm trying to knock out. Despite reading the whole Pellucidar series, I've never read the John Carter books, so finishing Princess was kind of a milestone. Burroughs & Robert E. Howard pretty much defined the heroic fiction genre, Indiana Jones style serials, wonderful fun stuff that you just can't take too seriously.

Allan Phillips I enjoyed The Dying of the Light. I've got a bunch of GRRM's early stuff. I first discovered him when I read Sandkings, his novelette that won Hugo, Nebula & Locus awards. Has this group ever read that?

Unlike many readers here, I didn't care so much for Ninefox Gambit. Couldn't relate to the characters and didn't like the world. Still, Yoon Ha Lee has an amazing imagination. Gave it three stars.

I don't see GRRM in the shelf. I'd love to re-read Sandkings as a group/buddy read. Can we do that here though?
