So, February...I can take Red Mars, if no one desperately wants it. I've read it before. :)

No problem-I wanted to read it but have managed to get behind again....

Mark-you in for Culture?

Where are we for March? I can't seem to get a hold of The Snow Queen, but I could do Leviathan Wakes. Or take a month off, if someone wants that one.

Mark-do you have a preference? I recently read Snow Queen so I can do that one if need be....

I definitely don't want to do The Expanse, ugh.

I wouldn't mind doing Snow Queen but only if you don't want to do it. is it weird to have a guy listed as leading the discussion of an SF Mistressworks selection? either way, I'm fine doing it or not doing it.

yep. I change the banner from time to time to keep things fresh.

I also changed the profile picture (and have done it once previously). the idea that "science fiction" is illustrated by a straight white couple clinched in a romantic embrace annoys me. I like the picture well enough, it's retro and I love that, but I don't think we should be wedded to it as our perpetual profile image.

Sorry - I've been a bit out of it. Who's doing which book this month? I could do either!

message 261: by mark, personal space invader (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 1287 comments Mod
I'd love to not do either one and take a break this month, if that's possible...

Sorry guys, I've been absent a lot recently. Is there a book this month I can take?

message 265: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
I plan to take 2001, if you want to take the Expanse book-I am behind on that series

message 266: by mark, personal space invader (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 1287 comments Mod

what month should the next series read begin? I don't mind doing it because I've been excited to read that series, unless someone else wants to.

message 269: by Lena (new)

Lena November? October is for spooky reads! I'll be all scared out by November and ready for something fresh!

message 270: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
Go ahead Mark, I've read it before....
Yes, start in October

message 271: by Megan (new)

Megan Baxter | 277 comments Mod
I've read the first one, and I'll definitely be chiming in, but yes, go ahead and take it, mark.

message 272: by mark, personal space invader (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 1287 comments Mod
yay, I will!

Lena wrote: "November? October is for spooky reads! I'll be all scared out by November and ready for something fresh!"

I tend to agree... but I checked and we only have one other read scheduled for October, and we usually prefer to have two.

Who is doing the January read? I haven't done anything in a bit.

message 274: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
You can Megan-I plan to read it, but I am so behind on things! I have to start a series read thread now that I think bout it....lol

So, the reads for February are More Than Human and Parable of the Sower? I'd take either - I've wanted to read Sturgeon for a long time, and I read and loved Parable of the Sower. And for once, my library has both of them!

message 277: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
MArk-are you wanting one? I havent been able to get parable of the sower, so I can do Sturgeon if we need to......

message 278: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
Megan-go ahead and do parable and I will do the Sturgeon

so sorry I wasn't able to respond in time! January was a really, really busy month for me. thank you both for putting up threads.

message 280: by Maggie, space cruisin' for a bruisin' (new)

Maggie K | 1287 comments Mod
ok-need you guys' input...There was only one nomination this month, should we just go with that?
and I forgot about Parable being done this month and didnt do another series poll yet.
So..... Should we do the one nom, and have one of us pick the other read? or does anyone have a better idea?

message 281: by mark, personal space invader (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 1287 comments Mod
I'm fine with going with just the one.

message 282: by Megan (new)

Megan Baxter | 277 comments Mod
Either way is fine by me!

message 283: by Dan (last edited Mar 20, 2017 08:25PM) (new)

Dan | 381 comments I did not receive any notification of nominations for April's theme being open. April is still ten days away, plenty of time to take nominations and run a poll if you care to. I'll read most anything so long as Scalzi didn't pen it.

Dan-its works of Joan Slonczewski...quick add one if you want

message 285: by Dan (last edited Mar 21, 2017 05:34PM) (new)

Dan | 381 comments Actually, I liked A Door Into Ocean. I read it in my early 20s when it first came out because I didn't cancel my Science Fiction Book of the Month Club selection that particular month. I think it may be time for a reread since I don't remember it being the feminist work everyone else keeps saying it is.

Hey Maggie and mark,

I'm really sorry to do this, but I've been a bit of a flake recently - I'm trying to work full-time and finish edits on my dissertation, which has left me less available. And then my mother passed away unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago. I just don't have the resources to be a moderator right now.

I might be able to come back to it in a few months, but I wanted to give you a head's up so you weren't relying on me.
