Astrid (astridetal) Hi,
I am Astrid and I'm very new to GoodReads and this group. It seems this group is very interesting. I mostly read (auto)biographies, non-fiction and teen/YA fiction. I love books about mental health (both fiction and non-fiction). I am from the Netherlands, but love English-language books, although they're hard to get because I'm blind and need them in accessible format. I'm not sure I can participate in the monthly book discussions since I am not likely to get hold of the book in time. Unless we're going to discuss books that are written before the 1930s or so someday since then they will be in the public domain.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Hi Astrid. Welcome to our group. Your favourite genres are quite interesting. You might want to pop over to the theme suggestion thread and leave a comment recommending them. You could even specify pre-1930's as a suggestion.

What formats do you prefer?

Thanks for the welcome. I prefer audio books or eBooks, but most eBooks have DRM on them which makes them inaccessible for screen reader users like me.

Astrid (astridetal) Judy wrote: "Welcome, Astrid! I read a lot of non-fiction, too. What are some of your favorite books?"

My current favorites are a few biographies by people with dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality disorder). Examples include A God Called Father by Judith Machree, First Person Plural by Cameron West, and Silencing the Voices by J.D. Cline. Sorry I couldn't link to the GoodReads page, that thing doesn't seem to work with my screen reader.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Welcome Astrid! I look forward to a different perspective and to more recommendations in less popular topics & genres.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Astrid, I believe that Kindle has ebooks that will read to you. I'm not 100% certain, but worth looking into at any rate.

Astrid (astridetal) @Cheryl: thanks for the welcome.
@Janice: I can't use Amazon cause I don't have a credit card.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments It's too bad Amazon doesn't have gift cards available like iTune gift cards are. You can buy iTune cards at many stores. Amazon has them, but as far as I know, you can only purchase them online using a credit card.

Alison Forde | 269 comments I think any maestro, visa debit etc will do for Amazon. I have a Kindle and they do text to speech but the title your reading has to be text to speech enabled, so I guess not all are. The text to speech is like being read to by Steven Hawking, but without the appropriate pauses for full stops/paragraphs etc, so its not great.

I was wondering if the text to speech would be lackluster.
