This book is at least 8 or 9 years old. The main character witnesses his death in the flash-forward I believe? I know that's kind of vague but any help would be appreciated!

Flashforward by Robert J. Sawyer has that theme. (Just so you know, it's significantly different from the TV show that aired.)
It's the book Flashforward. Perfect match with that little bit about the main character.
