Naw, Grant will settle for yelling a little and then he'd be easily distracted by a shiny new book, lol. In fact, you can cut the yelling to 0 if you tell him about a new book.
LMOA @ Mrs J!I just had an image of Grant all red in the face, yelling, and Lady D coughing to silence him, and then holding up a new book by Robin Hobb or Jim Butcher.
The anger immediately melts from Grant's face as he cocks his head.
"Oooohh," he says. "Where'd you get that?"
LOL! It would probably happen just like that, too!Then he'd run off to read.

I was thinking of creating an "Information Station" folder where we can post threads detailing any information that might come up in a random conversation that people can use.I'm thinking that all the information gathered about where to buy leather bound books could go there, the thread about free books/giveaways, new releases, etc.
What do you think?

So, how about a reading challenge section? I'm thinking - for us - more of a "TBR Reading Challenge" lol. I loved Dawn's TBR challenge.
Maybe just under "Food for Thought" or "Novels?" I'm not sure what else would be under the topic, so it might get lost.
I like the idea of a folder, actually. We can then have other reading challenges, such as your yearly reading goal, or perhaps people will want to slug through an entire series without stop.

So just a comment/suggestion.. I know the folders are all in alphabetical order, but wouldn't it make sense to have the monthly read ones at the top regardless of that? It's always hard for me to find them, buried at the bottom of the list... I just thought I'd throw that out there :)

I just though it would make more sense to have the group reads closer to the top... Like right after the introduction and group admin folder, rather than buried in the bottom alphabetically..

We were discussing the books that made the top 100 and voiced some disappointment about who made it and who was on the list (Sci-Fi & Fantasy were combined).
My thought:
Let's create our own list in the same way as NPR - send out a mass email to the entire group to ask them to nominate X amount of books. Then we take the nomination list and create a poll. Top whatever number wins.
Call it "An Aficionados Guide to the best <100> Fantasy Books" or something like that...?
What do yall think?

This is a great idea, Mrs J! How do we go about it? I've never really done much regarding lists on Goodreads.
Can we send out the email to folks with X amount of posts. I know some of yall like to champion the lurkers but I just don't feel that they should have equal say to those of us who are real fantasy aficionados. And by real I mean contributing members.
Er, not a mod, but just wanted to put in my two cents and say that if you're going to limit it that way you might want to consider that you might get a list more reflective of the frequent contributors but less so of those who are real fantasy fans. It's observation bias, but I know I know jack all about the genre, but run my mouth all the time. I would assume there are people around here who are the opposite. I think it depends on what you want to "do" in making the list.
*nods* There's truth in that, I suppose but I think you're equally screwed in letting anyone have an opinion. I generally check out every newbie that joins and quite a few of em don't Really seem like that big of fantasy fans. A book here or there but not much real substance in the genre. I just wouldn't want to put my name to a list that was lopsided towards a bunch of folks with no real knowledge of the genre.

My two cents.It's an informal list for this group. It's not something that has to be official or set in stone. I would like to see what a good mix of the members come up with because we are all different, and there no one definitive fantasy fan. Yes, some readers are more schooled and are discerning and particular fans of fantasy, but the fantasy genre is wide enough, and so is this group, to encompass various types of books and opinions.
*grins* I just take that aficionado part to heart ;) No worries.
I agree it should be open to more members. Plus, you never know who we might draw out of the woodwork!
Just because a person doesn't have a huge amount of fantasy books in there shelf doesn't mean there not a fan. Isn't joining a group like this suppose to open your eyes to new authors. Or is this just a place to talk about nothing. I guess if you just want a poll with the experts on fantasy, go ahead. People like myself will have to see the finished product and listen to the "experts". What exactly constitutes a expert. Someone who talks a lot on this site or someone with a lot of fantasy books read in there profile?
Hmm ultimately any poll is just a matter of opinion and those are usually rather varied at the very least. However I do believe that some opinions have more substance than others. Does a person that has read a thousand novels in a genre have a more well rounded base to form an opinion than someone that's read 20 novels in the same genre? I think so. *grins*. Then again we're right back to that being an opinion. Vicious circle, huh. It's really not that big a deal tho. This is a place for experts and noobs, for deep conversation and silly, playful meanderings and, as always, majority rules here. As I said so maliciously earlier...

Hi everyone. I'd also like to add my two cents. I'm fairly new to the group and although I many not be contributing to the discussions as frequently as some others, I certainly do if there's something I want to comment on, and I'd like to think that being a group member means you're welcome to participate in group activities. I've read a huge amount of fantasy and I'd like to think that my opinion would be welcome if there is something I want to voice my opinion on.
Shannon, all members are welcome to participate and voice an opinion. Speaking for myself, I despise any kind of elitist, exclusive environment. And the last thing I'd want is for this group to feel that way to members.
Reading back my earlier post I might have sounded a little malicious myself. For some reason the whole poll thing got my Irish up. This is a wonderful group and I didn't mean to offend anyone with my comments.

As for elitism well I'm an elitist when it comes to fantasy. I neither deny or apologize for that. It's something I'm passionate about to say the least and something I wish more folks would take pride in. It's the latin blood in me I suppose;)
