I'm just wondering what exact power the names have in this series. Percy is constantly reminded/warned "Names have power" and thunder rumbles over Camp when certain names are mentioned. But what exact power does the names have? Does it make a specific character stronger or something?

Well you can make promises that go to death with "I swear on the river styx" or by Zeus. I think its just if you know their name then you can make promises by it. I think the general idea is you lose the thing you swear by if you break the promise. If you lose Zues a "god" then you lose any protection you once had. Just speculation of course. :)
Intresting idea though. I never really thought about it.
My take was that in a lot of cultures, knowing someone's true name gave you pwer over them, because you could use their name to cast a spell on them. I took the ref's in the book as something similar.
Like Bartemeaus trilogy?
I dunno- never heard of it. But the power of names is one of the main drivers of Ursula LeGuin's 'Earthsea' books.
I think it might kind of be like in Harry Potter how Harry calls Voldemort Tom in the last book, to take away the power he thought he had. Just an idea.

Juliet... How is it your in almost every discussion I check out? Anyways.. To me if you say their names, you somehow make it MORE worse for you and the other people around. I mean you're already a demi-god, so don't put more curses on you! That is what I think.

Learning that name bends that person to your will, which is a common belief in a few cultures.

Oh and like peoples last names hold more power too. Like if someone knows your last name they may know who your family is. It could give them power over you depending on who your family is...
True enough. Except if you have a really common last name. Harder to track down. But since we're talking about mythology, guess it doesn't matter.
Oh sorry I meant more like power over you if you were like kidnapped and your parents were rich, or your dad was the president. Not so much like if someone knew your last name on line. Kind of gets the same message across but.. :)

but its fun! woudn't it be intresting if riordan just killed somebody (a character to be specific--he doesn't seem like the murdering type) like a important person. it could be intresting. who should die? or at least be mortally injured (haha--i'm starting to be grateful for lating classes) :)
Well smileys are fun. It's not my fault, that one person started it! And I wouldn't want one of the major characters to die. Or the minors. Unless it's a bad guy. But then you could forgive her/him and she/he could be good!

huh? Um, I meant that you could shape the bad guys up and show them how to be good rather than evil. But since it's Greek Mythology guess you can't really do that..... unless they're human or demi-gods.....
