Serena The thing is about the Greeks is they named their gods well, take the main Olympian Twelve:

Zeus/Deus: "God"

Poseidôn : Sea Lord/ Earth Husband

Hermes: herm, a sacred boundary-marker or road-altar, or Hermeneus, which means the interpreter.

Hera:
hora (‘ωρα), season
Mistress as a feminine to Heros, Master
"young cow, heifer"

Hephaestus:
Whose name is used interchangeably with "fire"

Dionysus:
diemai "to chase, hurry, impel"
nũsa was an archaic word for "tree"
"he who runs among the trees", or that of a "runner in the woods".
cosmological interpretation of "he who impels the (world-)tree."
This interpretation explains how Nysa could have been re-interpreted from a meaning of "tree" to the name of a mountain.

Demeter:
mother of the house
earth mother
or, rarely: deai (δηαί), Ionic zeai (ζηαί) meaning "barley", so that she is the Corn-Mother and the giver of food generally

Athena
Egyptian Neith: weaver.
Athena may also be "thea", Greek word for goddess

Artemis
artemês, uninjured, healthy, vigorous
"ἀρτεμής" (artemes), "safe"
"ἄρταμος" (artamos) "a butcher"
*h₂ŕ̥tḱos meaning "bear"

Ares
Greek word ἀρή (arē), the Ionic form of the Doric ἀρά (ara), "bane, ruin, curse, imprecation"
In the Iliad, the word ares is used as a common noun synonymous with "battle."

Apollo
ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi), "to destroy".
Plato in Cratylus connects the name with ἀπόλυσις (apolysis), "redeem", with ἀπόλουσις (apolousis), "purification", and with ἁπλοῦν (aploun), "simple",
Hesychius connects the name Apollo with the Doric απέλλα (apella), which means "assembly"

Aphrodite
Hesiod connects it by with ἀφρός (aphros) "foam," interpreting it as "risen from the foam".

Samantha Totally off topic, but if Percy is the son of Posiedon, why is he named after a son of Zeus??? zeus hates him.... Just wondering.

Madeline His mom named him that because it was one of the only Greek mythology hero stories that had a happy ending... i think, i'm really not sure.

Samantha Yeah, I really don't understand.... YOu would think she would pick out the right name though.... lol

Love that trilogy Tiki. Have you read the newest by Stroud? Solomon's Ring..another Bartemeaus adventure and just as entertaining!

MizziQ NO! Now I want to. Have you? I loved those books. :)

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) Huh? Cool. Whatever. Bored. Not really. LOVE MYTHOLOGY!!!!!

My secret name is: "The Awesome and Magical Ninja Squirrel of Destiny"

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) ;) Sweet dude. I mean dudess.

Kimber Yes i've read it. My bad on the title..Its The Ring of Solomon by Jonathan Stroud. If you liked the trilogy then you will definitely like this one. Bartemeaus is just as frustratingly arrogant and hilarious as the first time around AND this time he has a little crush. :D

MizziQ Oooh! Fun! I can only imagine the humor with the crush. :) Haha! :)

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) Hm....I shall take it in to consideration...*breaks down into giggles*

Kaleigh - Captain Bubbles ESTP(intj) I am still so lost here.

Daniel Pretty sure that in the series, it is more if you name someone, like a god, it draws their attention towards you. Maybe something similar the old sayings of when if someone is talking about you, your ears are burning, or someone walked over your grave and you get a shiver.
