Shannon I find it really sad how John doesn't get the girl he loves. He has to live with the fact that he would never get her and he has to watch her as she is in love with someone else. I know that the ending was "real" but I still wish that he had gotten the girl :(

Erica Yes, I thought it was sad too. Did you see the movie? They changed the ending.

Amna omg.. i forgot how it ended.. who was savanah with?

Zoha I hated Savannah for what she did to John. I wanted to scream.

Kimberly Hartwig I really didn't like Savannah in the end. This might be the only time I preferred a moving ending compared to the book ending.

Shannon I haven't seen the movie, only read the book. When I read the ending I felt like Savannah had betrayed John because she had promised him that when he got back from the war she would marry him. I didn't like the way that it ended because John sounded really broken-hearted.

Erica Yeah I wanted to slap Savannah. Reading the book you get the feeling that they shared a deep bond. But then I feel sorry for her because it seems as though she married the other guy out of pity.

Kel (Faerie-bookworm) It seemed very different for a NS book.

Karen She was dedicated and was determined to stick with the guy even if she still felt something for John. I find this is a typical ending for an NS book someone either dies or is in the process of dying, They are all sad at the end.

Zoha That's the whole reason why I love them. They aren't the happy endings everyone wants them to be.
But Savannah just broke his heart and I love John and didn't want that for him.

message 11: by Krizza (new) - added it

Krizza Sombra i love John and Savannah, their love truly exists but something happened, but i love John even more for letting go..

Shannon Yup, it was really sweet of him. Even though he still loved Savannah he let her be happy with a guy he knew. Even though he knew that Savannah still loved him.

message 13: by Krizza (new) - added it

Krizza Sombra but if u were savannah?? what would you do??? hmmm...

Shannon I think that I would consider John's promise important because I loved him (if I was Savannah) and I would have kept my promise:)

message 15: by Krizza (new) - added it

Krizza Sombra yeah right, but it will take me a lot of time considering Tim..

Marissa Lambert At first, I absolutly hated the ending. I was sooo mad. But after thinking about it a while, I loved it. It wasn't the typical "happily ever after" ending. It was real. :)

Shannon yes, it was:)

message 18: by Zoha (new) - rated it 5 stars

Zoha Krizza wrote: "but if u were savannah?? what would you do??? hmmm..."

I would stay loyal to him.
He would be important to me.

Sarah I completely thought just that. I mean I kind of understand but it kind of ruined the book for me.

message 20: by Krizza (new) - added it

Krizza Sombra yeah, having John as a lover?? what else could you wish for??? he's hot, kind, considerate and willing to give the "unconditional love"..

message 21: by Krizza (new) - added it

Krizza Sombra you think so sarah??

GracieMakasie Becker I think the whole book was so sad I loved it though. I do think it is extreamly sad when John's dad dies and I was shocked when Savannah was married to Tim..It's amazing how books can turn out this was the best book I ever read and it is so sad I think the sadest part is at the end when he says he may never see Savannah again, and he dosen't really

message 23: by Asha (new) - rated it 2 stars

Asha Seth Yes it was terrible what Savannah did to John and I thought she loved her truly until of course she marries Tim, Poor guy John. The book ended on sad notes with both the main characters oddly dying for the love of their lives.

Lindsey White I thought the ending was perfect!! He did the ulitmate love sacrifice by letting her go..It was selfless and amazing!! I absolutely love this book BECAUSE of the ending.. it's not your typical love story, but so much more.. I definately wasn't thinking that it would end up that way, but I'm glad it did... I just wish the movie would have followed the book..

GracieMakasie Becker I know Its not your typical love story normally it ends with the couple getting married or something but this was actually pretty amazing

Shannon Yes, it was :) The ending made me mad at Savannah but other than that I loved it!!!

message 27: by Zoha (new) - rated it 5 stars

Zoha It was perfect. No other way would have fit right.

Amelia I get why the author would make that the ending, but I wish he got to be with her. Savannah and him were perfect, but I get where Nicholas Sparks was coming from when he chose that for the ending...

Tiffany I actually preferred the book's ending to the movie's ending. I always thought Savannah was selfish and if she truly loved John, she would've waited for him. The end of the book proves what a great man John was. I think Savannah made a choice she had to live with. The movie basically let Savannah off the hook to have it both ways. For once, I was glad when the guy didn't get the girl. I picture him moving forward in life and finding the perfect partner for him.

It broke my heart. The ending in the movie pissed me off. I was yelling at the screen that that wasn't how the story ended LOL

message 31: by Kate (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kate I thought it was really sad. But I sort of liked that about it. I think I read too many happy endings and that this sad ending made the story that much more enjoyable for me to read.

BubblesTheMonkey The ending is sad, but I like the ending.

Sarahowen you can all agree with one thing though i think that even though the ending was sad and probably not quite what we were all expecting, it stayed with you and its one of those books you talk about and remember.

BubblesTheMonkey Very true, Sarahowen.

oh, gawd i hate this book! i only read it because i wanted to see the movie and i'm the type of person that reads the book first and then the movie. but when i read it, man, the ending sucked!! it was total crap! it's stupid! the dad just dies, the girls turns to be a total loser, and john, come on. really? Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!!!!

i didn't even bother watching the movie!!! i liked the actors that played john and savanna though.

but or else, i HATE it!

Sarahowen Well that's your veiw and u have every right to feel that way but we are all talking about the ending there's no need for such a rude responce though I appreciate you dont like it yourself that's not the point of t discussion.

Tasneemali Come on ... I don't agree that the ending is sad ... sad means tragic and melancholy ... but on the contrary it's sentimental and realistic !!! Such a romantic novel and the last paragraph <3 <3 " And then I feel as if I'm witnessing a miracle , as ever so slowly she raises her face toward the moon . I watch her drink in the sight , sensing the flood of memories she's unleashed and wanting nothing more than to let her know I'm here. But instead I stay where Iam and stare up at the moon as well . And for the briefest instant , it almost feels like we're together again" <3 <3

Nichole Wolfe personally, i hated the ending. im an army wife and it was...offending kind of. Military men leave for war sometimes. That's their job. I think if Savannah really loved John, she would have waited. Tim's a nice guy and all, but her heart belonged to John, and that's where her loyalties should lie first. I'm not really sure why she married Tim. I got more a friendship love vibe from her end for Tim. Definately pity, I think. To say the ending is realistic...yeah i suppose, if the chick is disloyal, indecisive, and totally weak-minded.

Tiffany Nichole wrote: "personally, i hated the ending. im an army wife and it was...offending kind of. Military men leave for war sometimes. That's their job. I think if Savannah really loved John, she would have wai..."

That was my opionion too! I'm not a military wife but I have friends who are, and you summed it up perfectly!

Shannon I agree!!!!!!!!!!! I think that Savannah should have waited for John instead of just marrying her good friend (even if her friend did love her).

message 41: by Ging (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ging I just finished reading Dear John this week. Gosh! It broke my heart. 3

But, seriously, I did not hate the ending. Both Savannah and John should live with the consequences of their actions. If Tim did died like in the movie, it looks as if John was just a consolation, or was just trying to console the reader. I know it's stupid, but I want them to end together not just because Tim died but because they like to be together.

The ending is, for me, sad and sweet. Have you noticed what John said in the Prologue? "When I leave here again, I'll never come back." So, the ending was the last time John saw Savannah? I felt terribly bad. :(
That's it for them! :((

Oh well, I really loved this book. It's special because of its ending. That's true love right there!

Me either, the book was so far the best! I totally agree with everything that you said. I think I'll love John forever. :) The ending was just perfect don't you think?

Shannon Well....I'm not really sure...

The ending was sad but for me it didn't quite feel like an ending...if that makes sense?

I found it sweet that John decided to let Savannah carry on with her life with her husband. It made me cry when I read how sad John was when he found out that Savannah was married to Tim and she still loved him :( I loved the book....it is one of my favourites :)

The ending wasn't really perfect for me...it was a "real" ending. I would have preferred it if Savannah had married John because I love romantic, happy endings. I haven't seen the movie yet but I really want to :)

Michael I actually like the ending, it was not predictable. I thought it was nice to see a movie end with him not getting the girl. That is true love, letting someone go.

Marissa Lambert Michael wrote: "I actually like the ending, it was not predictable. I thought it was nice to see a movie end with him not getting the girl. That is true love, letting someone go."

But in the movie, didnt they end up together?
I think youre talking about the book. They didn't up together in the book. (btw, I agree with you, i loved the ending)

I apologize yes I was referring to the book, I believe they did end up together in the movie:)
