Yeah I think that the ending was sad. Like put yourself in Johns shoes and how would you feel???I was really mad at whats her name...
I was so mad at Nicholas Sparks for not letting John and Savannah get together in the end. I have not forgiven him for this ending. I can't stand this book!

Like I get SO involved in the book that I just forget that is is a book and get mad at the characters.
Ginger wrote: "Absolutely. I was very disappointed with the ending; made me sorry I had read the book at all!"Oh I was still happy I read the book, but yes , I was very disappointed at the ending.

Hi, He is definitely a good writer and though I know not every story can have a happy ending, I really wanted this one to!
I cried until I couldn't, and in reality that's what really happens on most long distance relationships..
Jude wrote: "I cried until I couldn't, and in reality that's what really happens on most long distance relationships.."Don't say that! I know its the truth but I know a lot of people who are a good couple and are trying a long distance!
Ruth wrote: "Don't say that! I know its the truth but I know a lot of people who are a good couple and are trying a long distance!"Well, like most people, it just didn't work out for me as well. But hey, I admire those couples who can stay strong in a long distance relationship.
And Savannah should have waited for John. :'(

I know ! She should of! I was SO PISSED at her ! Like what the heck ,really?
I get why John left them alone at the end, but really, Savannah loved John more than Tim. With Tim it was more like a brother/sister love. But Savannah was too late to do anything about it. You know? I thought it was really sad. :(
I found it very upsetting, I was depressed for a few days and I didn't want to see the movie. I still haven't seen the movie should I?

I liked the ending, I just think it is kind of sad that he could not be with the girl he loved. One thing that i didnt like is how she broke up with John while he was in the military...i dont know i guess that is just my own opinion.

Like its bad enough that he was fighting for her freedom and she is the only reason he has basically to live and then she goes and breaks up with him... WHATS UP WITH THAT
Yes, I believe the ending was extremely sad. But on the other hand, I can understand where Savannah was coming from. It's hard for a couple to go without seeing each other for long periods of time, especially a year. People change and life goes on. On the other hand though, I believe Savannah was wrong for telling John that she is done over letter when he was in a different country in war. That was extremely selfsish in my opinion. By the end of the novel, John finally can forgive Savannah, and become friends.
I didn't love the ending (or the book, really) but I thought it worked for the characters, actually. It also fits with most Nicholas Sparks endings (someone's usually dying/has died).Savannah breaking up with John while he was in the military wasn't great but it sure did make the title of the book appropriate.
Well ( in reply to Katie's and Book Sp(l)ot's comment ) I was still EXTREMELY PISSED!!!!!!!!!! It just made me really mad because I always put myself in the characters positions and it just made me sad that Savannah did that:(
I think the book is both about selfless kind of loving and selfish kind of loving. Where John loved savannah truely she could'nt even wait for him for a year or two,she claimed to love him more than anything, she claimed to love him more than her husband ,then why the hell did she fall for someone else, i just could'nt fathom da reason for it. I got extremely angry with Nicholas for writing such sad story coz at the end John is left with nothing. It kind of made me cry my heart out. But then i guess nicholas wanted to show that love is everything about sacrifice. :(:( I just wish book should have ended in a better way.
I saw the movie first and I fell in love with the whole idea of letters. I have to say I think Savannah's character was much more likeable in the movie, like I kind of understood more why she did what she did. But I think the ending in the book was better all in all because we saw what true love is when John just let her go. The ending was sad and tragic and at first made me mad, but thinking back it was the perfect ending to a love story. I now don't blame Savannah, I sort of blame Tim.
Sara wrote: "I saw the movie first and I fell in love with the whole idea of letters. But Savannah should have waited for John :( This book is all about true love I agree but only from John's part. :(
Nazia wrote: "Sara wrote: "I saw the movie first and I fell in love with the whole idea of letters. I have to say I think Savannah's character was much more likeable in the movie, like I kind of understood more ..."I'm not mad at tim just FRIGGIN PISSED at savannah!
And yes savannah should of waited for John...
i was crying for the whole last chapter. but it was good it ended that way. if it would have had a kind of hollywood ending where he would get Savannah it would have been no good to the story and it would feel not right. he made the characters come to life and if it ended differently he would have made me feel like they don't deserve each other anymore somehow. so it was right this way although it was really sad.
I just re-watched the movie and realized that I remembered it TOTALLY wrong... I forgot all about the part at the end with the hospital and when he goes back to the house for dinner... I was a bit more happy with the ending but it still made me cry when he got the letter :(
Yes, the ending made me upset. i thought the ending in the movie was much better. at least in the movie John got to see Savannah again. in the book he gave her money and never spoke to her!!!

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!!
I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!!
The ending was completely depressing for me ! I mean i wanted it to me re written but i heard the ending was changed in the movie so i guess i will give it a pass !!
I agree it was a sad ending, but unfortunately sometimes that's real life too. I was hoping for a happy ending though!
Lina wrote: "The ending was completely depressing for me ! I mean i wanted it to me re written but i heard the ending was changed in the movie so i guess i will give it a pass !!"Well you should just watch the movie and see for yourself :)
The ending was sad but not surprising. Already in the prologue you can see that this is not going to be a happy ending.
It was sad, but really, is there a book by Nicholas Sparks that isn't? I come to read a book of his preparing to cry\be sad at the end. It was realistic and perfect.
i read this book in a day and I was disappointed it didn't go the way I wanted it to but I didn't write it. I couldn't wait to see the movie and was even more disappointed. I had high hopes and I LOVE Channing Tatum! Have you read The Best Of Me yet? What a good book...I really liked this one

Ruth wrote: "Hillary wrote: "i read this book in a day and I was disappointed it didn't go the way I wanted it to but I didn't write it. I thought the ending was sad but I loved how John donated the money he got from his father's coin collection to treatment for Savannah's husband. This was definitely a tear-jerker for me.
I don't like Nicholas Sparks, I think that he's very shallow, and I prefer the movies based on his stories. Dear John is pretty predictable, and the end is a little bit sad, but I liked, it's not about a happy ending, it's more real.
YES, THE ENDING WAS SAD, BUT AT LEAST THE BOOK VERSION WAS WAY BETTER. JOHN AND SAVANNAH RECONNECTED, ACCORDING BY THE WAY THE MOVIE ENDED. HOORAY FOR MOVIES WITH HAPPY ENDINGS!!!!
Yes I felt soo bad for John at the End of this I was outraged for him and he was the nice guy and gave all that money for her husband have to say this is the one book where I enjoyed the movie ending WAYYY better than the book
April wrote: "I found it very upsetting, I was depressed for a few days and I didn't want to see the movie. I still haven't seen the movie should I?"Definatley see the Movie have to say I am very critical when they make books to movies But DEAR JOHN the movie is hands down way better than the book I actually liked Savannah in the movie to me in the book she was a snob!!! I loved the movie have watched it a few times and after my outrage at the book and Savannah I wont be re reading it love the story in Movie for much much better :)
It was sad but I loved it. I wouldn't have wanted it to end any other way. You understand the character of John soo much by what happened at the end. Beautiful ending. This is my most admired Nicholas Sparks book because of how it ended.
Honestly, at first I was hesitant to read this book because I knew they weren't going to end up together ( I am not a big fan of tragic love stories)... so 1 day i decided to give it a try. I was astonished at how much I loved it. It did catch me off guard and I absolutely loved that about the book. At first I was mad at John and Savannah for not working it through, but then I understood that she couldn't wait for him forever. I can see why did what she did. However, from John's point it seems really bad what Savannah did and I ached for him and his heart. I felt exactly how he felt and it hurt. Can't imagine what he must have gone through. And then I admire at what he did. He wanted her to be happy. I loved that about him. He is such a beautiful character. So ultimately, even though the ending might seem sad and tragic to some people, it couldn't have been more perfect for me. :)
I think that the ending was just right. The sad part to me was when Tim got cancer. But the ending was kind of happy in its own way because Tim was healed and Savannah was happy and John felt good for what he did.
I think thats what makes it good. I hate having perfect endings. This is reality which is what makes it amazing and worth reading
