ABANDONED. Humans find and then enter spaceship found on earth and go mad once they get in

Hi there, Im really struggling and hope someone can help. In the 90's i read a paperback book about humans discovering a spaceship on earth. They monitor it, surround it by mines to stop it moving etc etc Eventually a spider type robot comes out of it and examines the surroundings, the humans see how the spider gets in and out of the spaceship and decide to follow it in. Once in it is so beautiful they go mad? I'd really like to read it again but I just cant remember what its called or the author. Hope you guys can help!

Have you checked out the bibliography of James P. Hogan? It doesn't sound like the ones I'm familiar with but it does sound like the kind of premise he was fond of writing.

Sounds a little like Sphere in that a spaceship is discovered in Earth's ocean and it takes the scientists forever to figure out how to get inside and once they do they all go kind of crazy. I don't remember a robotic spider though.

Are you sure that its not a movie that youre thinking of. I seem to remember the part with the spiders on the space ship but that was in a movie. There was a section of the ship, like the core or something, that was very beautiful and was surrounded by this black tar looking liquid. People start to go crazy and try to kill each other and these little spider things (big by earth standards) chase them all over and try to prevent them from leaving the ship. I believe the previous rescue crew had been killed and a distress signal keeps luring crews in. Your book sounds almost exactly like the movie but the ship is not on earth, its in space. Unfortunately I cant remember the name of the movie either. >.<

Probably the space movie with spiders is Lost In Space. There was another movie besides Sphere set in space with a crew that went crazy though, but I can't remember what that one was, nor do I remember any spiders.
