ok this is what the book was about A human shaped alien race is taking over many planets but one planet's aliens, a bug like species, puts up no fight. our main character is mentored by one of the bug like aliens and asks why didn't you fight, the answer is basically "it is more profitable to assimilate and take what is good about your culture then to die, we will be taken over by someone else soon enough and assimilate to their culture soon"
the other plot is that the main character's sister is in love with the main character's best friend. The only problem is that in order to marry and have children you must become a certain level sword fighter and the best friend cannot get to this level
