childrens fiction 1970s, boy reads book about a unicorn in a library and falls asleep to wake in a wood with a real unicorn. then goes on a quest and meets other creatures, manticore, cockatrice, griffen, phoenix. They nearly fall foul of a singing mermaid as well. had B&W illustrations and each chapter introduced a new creature. please help!

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende? It's years since I read it, so I can't say definitely. I have the German edition sitting on my coffee table, but haven't been in the mood for tackling that lately.
