The books I have read. is we shall we say a little on the safe side, I would like to expand my reading habits, I'm looking for ideas away from pulp fiction, but not to heavy to start with.

Any suggestions greatly received.

Thanks

stormhawk | 542 comments Do you want mystery, adventure, science fiction, fantasy?

Just plain good reading?

I really enjoyed I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb. Really intense character study sort of book.

Chrissie Do you like memoir - I mean NOT the ones concerning celebrities, politicians, drug problems and such.

Here are two that are excellent:

Ava's Man
Portrait of a Turkish Family

Currently I am reading The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe. It is really, really good, much better than A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Lianne Jasper Gillespie | 1 comments Hi Shirley,
all I can do is offer up my absolute favorite books of all time. I like varied types of books including classics, historical fiction, fantasy, sci-fi even. Here are some that make the list:
Water for Elephants
The Time Traveler's Wife
Pride & Prejudice
The Hunger Games
Beach Music
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
Memoirs of a Geisha
Snowflower and The Secret Fan
The Book Thief
A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Kite Runner
The Fountainhead
Shadow of the Wind
Pillars of the Earth
The Secret Life of Bees
A Prayer for Owen Meany

Any of those will be an excellent read in my opinion! Have fun!

Louise (LouiseZ) | 13 comments Shirley, I just finished The Three Weissmanns of Westport. It is very loosely based on Sense and Sensibility and is a wonderful book, extremely well written. I also loved Freedom and like Stormhawk I liked I Know This Much Is True, and anything else by Wally Lamb.
