I recommended this book to a friend. It is one of my absolute favorites. She said the little men in the black suits gave her nightmares. I loved his description of skating. Any other good stories?

You must read "Time and Again" by Jack Finney!

The greatest novel written in the 20th century without a plot one reviewer noted, lol. The sheer number of characters and melieus can be daunting, but Helprin outdid himself with this beautiful novel. If one loves lyricism in writing, this book is a MUST read.
"There was a white horse, on a quiet winter morning..." And off we go with Athansor (and soon, Peter Lake) into the belle-epoque era of NYC. Divine writing.

My favourite description was the one of the horse running down the street. There are descriptive scenes in that book that are really unforgettable...

The book was like one big long dream ... makes total and no sense at all... but makes you feel as if those moments are very real.

I loved the story of Time and Again, but found the writing painfully bad...

Yes, "Time and Again" is one of my favorite books. And while I loved the dreamy feel of "Winter's Tale" I felt that a book that long needs to have some satisfaction in the end. I found that to be disappointing.

I reckon there was a plot here - it was spread out like snowflakes waiting to be made into a ball, but there was a plot, and the final impression I got from this fabulous book is that it was seamless and wonderful. Bit of a fave, can you tell?

I am reading this for the third time since 1984 as I anticipate the 2013 film. Even though I have yet to understand it fully, I consider this one of my favorite books. I am unable to explain that feeling. If you read the book, you will know.
